Antony Joshua

Post by fanzone » Sun Jun 07, 2020 4:18 pm

Seemingly offended lots of his own fans with his recent comments saying black people should only buy from black owned businesses.

As a white man that has watched and paid for 90% of his fights he's just lost me as a fan.

Hopefully Boris announces that white people should only buy off white people tomorrow when addressing the nation.

A mixture of that and Hearn can’t afford for his cash cow hype job to lose again. Although this covid19 might force him to cash in if it affects boxing going into next year.

If Fury said white people should only buy from white businesses he would be arrested and charged for making a racist comment. Can you imagine the furore if it was said boycott Asian shops due to the Asian grooming gangs, the vast majority of Asians would be disgusted quite rightly so at being tarred with the same brush as grooming gangs, Joshua has just basically said white people are all racists.

I’m not so sure his promotors and sponsors will think the comments were sensible.
I quite like the big guy, I just think he’s slipped up a bit there. I’m sure he will clarify his comments.

Seem clear enough to me.

He may well have been badly advised.... equally, he may not have and the comments are his own.

We may end up being fed some shite about context, but ultimately, he's dropped the ball here, in a very bad way.

He's shot himself right in the foot there hasn't he.
Normal folk understand that theres no such thing as positive discrimination.
He will get some support from extremists, and from people who get told how to think by a couple of the other students at college, but nobody with any sense wants to see people distancing themselves from others because they have different coloured skin

Financially I dont suppose it matters. He only has a couple of fights left as a cash cow and then he's finished as a top level boxer

Wow you can see the division all this has brought from a messageboard to the streets .

Problems created and divides over a disgusting murder in the US.

I'd like to see us all unite against peadophilia and famine in the same way.

Sadly that wont happen as these protests are falsely being used to hide anarchy and racism.

People need an excuse to go out and “be normal” so they can take selfies and plaster Facebook with something other than “look what I had for my tea”. This “protest” has given them that.... and in the middle of the pandemic they can also add “yes it’s dangerous (even tho they dont really believe that) but this is how wrong our society is and how much I believe in the fight against wrong” which can be shortened to “look at me, look at me”.
Seems AJ wants some of it...

Mohammed Ali he ain't though.
I watched Ali today on the Parkinson Show, way back some 50 years ago.
Watched one such programme today and Ali was talking about the importance of people of different races marrying people from the same race.
It was this morning so my memory might betray me but as nearest damn it one example he gave was that it was no good marrying a Chinese because you would have to listen to Chinese music all the time.
The audience was in stitches, possibly because of his charisma and charm, but it left me thinking how would some of his comments been received today.

The problem with bandwagons is, people get carried away.

And with this particular bandwagon, you can't say anything against it because that makes you racist.

I'm not a huge boxing fan, so I don't follow him all over the place, but he comes across to me as someone who tries to be the nice guy, yet when you get to the bottom of what he says, there's only so much he can cover up and he'll always drop a bollock by revealing who he really is.

He's entitled to buy from whoever he wants. He's never been the most likeable bloke though when you look past the pedestal Sky and Eddie Hearn have put him on. He's been done for drug dealing and has had his own accusations of being a racist when he allegedly (a spokesman said he was hacked) told Eddie Chambers that he was, 'a disgrace to the superior black race.'

I’ll echo the ‘really ?’ above.
It’s quite racist and separatist. Jews trade amongst themselves ( speaking from experience) and they prospered in mid war Germany whilst the rest of the population didn’t. This helped fuel resentment and racism with horrific consequences. Then I shouldn’t need to explain that should I ? Integration is better than separatism where communities have to live together. As mentioned above buying ‘white’ goods and services only would be appalling as would anyone who promoted this.

We need to speak out in peaceful demonstrations just like today, so well done Watford. Inject the vaccine. We must not use a demonstration for selfless motive and turn it into rioting and looting. We need to be united in non-violent demonstration, show them where it hurts and abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies, and invest in black-owned businesses. That's for all communities, if you want to uplift yourselves - invest in your own businesses. We have to engage with the youth, I completely agree with that, and put an end to black youth gang culture.

I'm going to be real with you about gang culture, I'm down to ride 100 per cent but what you have to realise is it's done, it is done, trust me, unless you want to be sitting in jail spending years upon years of your only life that you have thinking about yeah they can lock the locks but they can't stop the clocks. That's all done because there's too much cameras, too much intelligence, all the OGs that I know are telling me, 'Bro, it's finished. It's finished'. Gang life is finishing, that's what we're saying, I know that, I'm not promoting no gangster business.

I'm a legit straight-forward hustler, that's just in my DNA and in my blood. I know I've taken my street knowledge and taken it to the corporate world and I've gained a lot of respect in that sense. This postcode war. How many houses do we own on that postcode that we're fighting for? Let's inject the vaccine. Every life matters. 100 per cent I agree with that but that includes black lives and that's why we're here today.

George Floyd, we're all aware of his name. He was the catalyst in a list that was already way, way, way too long. But ask yourself a question - how does the looting for the latest flatscreen TV help him or his family? How does burning down shops and taking another life stop the virus from spreading? Remember the virus we're talking about is racism.

Killing a person outright is unforgivable but stripping them of their human rights, oppressing them, mocking them, insulting them, placing glass ceilings above them just because of their skin colour is just a slow way of killing them and taking the life out of their soul.

We must unite as a human race and that's what we're doing here today so once against thank you.

The Sunday Times report:

Anthony Joshua: looting and gang war won’t help George Floyd’s family

Anthony Joshua launched an impassioned plea to stop any rioting and looting in the continued fallout of the death of George Floyd, during the Black Lives Matter protest in Watford yesterday.

In his powerful speech — later posted on his Instagram account — to hundreds of peaceful protestors, he called for an end to black youth gang-culture in light of the reaction to the death of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minneapolis on May 25 when Derek Chauvin, a police officer, put a knee to his throat for almost nine minutes.

“George Floyd was a catalyst in a list that is way, way, way too long,” Joshua said. “Ask yourself a question, how does the looting for the latest flat-screen TV help him or his family?

“How does burning down shops and taking another life stop the virus spreading, and remember, the virus we are talking about is racism. We need to be united in non-violent demonstrations. Show them where it hurts. Abstain from spending money in their shops and economies and invest in black-owned business. We have to engage with the youth and put an end to black youth gang-culture.

“I’m going to be real with you about gang culture, you have to realise it is done. I know I’m not promoting any gangster business. I’m a legit, straightforward hustler, that’s in my DNA and my blood but I’ve taken my street knowledge and put it in the corporate world.

“This postcode war. How many houses do we own on that postcode we’re fighting for? Every life matters, 100 per cent I agree with that, but that does include black lives.

“We can no longer from today onwards sit back and remain silent on the senseless, unlawful killings, sly racism of another human being, based only on what? Their skin colour.

“We need to speak out at peaceful demonstrations, so well done Watford, inject the vaccine. We must not use a demonstration for selfish motives and turn it into rioting and looting.”

The IBF, WBA, and WBO world champion attended the event with his left leg in a brace that was described as precautionary and of no immediate concern by a spokesman.

*********************

I agree with ST, Joshua has made a "powerful speech." Stopping "rioting and looting" is a good thing. Encouraging "non-violent demonstrations" is a good thing. Promotion and development of "black-owned business" is a good thing.

If Boris Johnson came out and stated "White people must only buy things from white owned shops" and left it at that, with no other input or message then he'd be rightfully identified as a racist. There are many on this forum defending Boris for saying actual racist things like "pickaninny smiles" and "letterboxes" for people wearing burkas - the defence of that is that it was taken out of context, just as this is.

Grow up and get over it.

Reading the full speech he is pleading for calm and common sense and to set an example so fair play to him for that, it's his use of the word " their " and "them" whilst describing white/Asian owned businesses as though the local news agent, coffee shop takeaways etc were hot beds of white and Asian supremacists

if people took him at his word then, no one would use asian taxi companies, or use takeaways or small shops in their locality.
these firms would then have to rely totally on custom from within their own ethnic community?is that what joshua was implying ?
seems harsh to me. how would that benefit anyone.

Weird how some of the posters who see calling out racism as virtue signalling seem appalled by this supposed racism towards white people.

As for Joshua’s comments. Reading the posts leading up to Zlatan’s quoting of Joshua I expected him to be telling people to only shop at black-owned businesses. Turns out that isn’t the case at all and people have misquoted him, possibly deliberately.

The theme of the speech seems to be to quit the looting and rioting. Seems fair, wouldn’t you say, considering most of the posters on this thread have condemned the looting and rioting. Joshua is saying that rather than smashing up stores and stealing, stop spending your money in the stores. Seems pretty obvious to me yet I’m not desperate to see something that’s not there.

Very clumsy wording by using the word ‘their’. However I don’t see that term referring to the white race but to the organisations or businesses who turn a blind eye to racism.

It may be that Joshua was suggesting to ONLY spend your money in businesses owned by black people, but that’s certainly not what he said.

Weird how some of the posters who see calling out racism as virtue signalling seem appalled by this supposed racism towards white people.

Still not sure what the issue is with what he's said.

- Anthony Joshua

I see nothing wrong with the whole of this message, I have seen edited footage where it focuses on one particular sentence which in isolation would cause some people to wet their knickers though - which is what has been happening across social media (in the same way Keir Starmer was misquoted by Tory MPs)
That one sentence is p*** poor though. You can't gloss over it. He is advocating fighting racism with racism or at the very least advocating division and segregation. That simply will not work. It is strangely out of context with the rest of the speech though as i found the rest of it quite sensible.

I understood the context to be he was opposing racism and telling people not to buy from their (racists) shops.

Well he's encouraging people not to loot, so when he said don't spend money in their shops I take that to mean don't spend money in the shops that you may consider looting. He's suggesting a peaceful way to protest would be to not spend money in certain stores. He's encouraging black people to 'uplift themselves' by starting their own businesses.

I think you have to be looking for something to see an issue in what he said, personally. In fact, other than the clumsy use of the word 'their' I'd say it's a very positive speech with a message that I thought you and other contributors to this thread would be in agreement with.
