Re: Net spend for Prem clubs
I’d place us second for value for money.
BHA is abysmal. Bournemouth not much better. Southampton appear to be tight-wadding to relegation unless they start spending.

Re: Net spend for Prem clubs
Southampton have rec'd over £250m in last five years from outgoings according to Transfer Market web site - good business it would seem
Liverpool's outgoings of £410m also explains their net spend to some degree
BFC is around £83m

Re: Net spend for Prem clubs
Fans love a net spend table. As ever, it's the wage bill which most closely follows the league table, the wage bill which bankrupts clubs and the one which needs watching most closely.
Lewandowski moved to Bayern on a free the same year we signed Marvin Sordell for cash. So they've got a better net spend than us on that one. However, it's probably reasonable to say we didn't 'miss out' on that signing. And that Lewandowski perhaps cost a little more over the next 6 years than Marvin did back in 2014.

Re: Net spend for Prem clubs
Be interesting how net spending pans out over the next year or two. Will clubs take a more prudent approach post-covid or not.
Wages will also be worth watching, i can see them flattening out at best, and perhaps even dropping slightly until the dust settles, and clubs know their media incomes, and matchday revenues are secure again.
It might bring a semblance of sense to the crazy transfer market, and the crazy salaries being doled out, for often mediocre players, yes Ozil and Pogba i'm referring to you.

Re: Net spend for Prem clubs
Wages in the 2018/19 season took the unusual step of rising quite rapidly (particularly in the big six - even though it was the final year of the tv cycle. I suspect that was largely down to the anticipation of greater income as a result of adding a merit payment from the overseas TV monies in the current tv cycle. Ironic that as a result of the rebate most of that will disappear this season.tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 2:47 pmBe interesting how net spending pans out over the next year or two. Probably the bigger issue across Europe is the 5 of turnover is paid in wages - in some countries it was getting unhealthy in the top leagues before this season

Assuming you've put Liverpool first, then I think Sheffield United are doing better than us when you take into account their spend.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 8:00 amI’d place us second for value for money.

Fair call but I think we’ll finish above them. Their hard running style might catch up with them in summer on fewer rest days.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 3:09 pmAssuming you've put Liverpool first, then I think Sheffield United are doing better than us when you take into account their spend.

It'll be an interesting season if we do, as they were/are the media darlings.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 3:11 pmFair call but I think we’ll finish above them. Their hard running style might catch up with them in summer on fewer rest days.
Re: Net spend for Prem clubs
But, in reality, the spend of Sheff Utd is down to just this year being their first in the Prem before which they were spending very little. They will spend a lot more with the new ownersFactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 3:09 pmAssuming you've put Liverpool first, then I think Sheffield United are doing better than us when you take into account their spend.

Doesn't this just emphasise how well they have done even in comparison to teams like us who have been building its squad on Premier League riches for years whist they were down in League 1?

But where is the new owner going to find that money - he is wealthy in Burnley terms (about 5 times what Garlick is worth) but a very long way short of being a Billionaire - also he has to find of £50m or more this summer to buy the ground, training ground and other assets from the McCabe family under the terms of the takeover contract.
