Classical Music Recommendations
Hi guys!
Looking for classical music recommendations within a specific criteria.
Either a solo piece suitable for piano or cello OR an arrangement of a piece specifically to be played solo on piano or cello.
Something identifiably classical (but not necessarily composed a long time ago by somebody famous) also something upbeat and invigorating - nothing sombre.
For example, the theme to The Southbank Show but more substantive. Elgar's cello concerto enigma variations would be too sombre.
Thanks!

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
I suppose it depends on what level you can play at - though some of Chopin's etudes may fit the bill
have a listen and see what you think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glBbd7jeIPs
Rachmaninoff's etudes may be too sombre https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUOY2yhuEGQ
Mozart's Piano sonata's can have whimsy though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wcgd1oCbW4g

My favourite piece on the piano is Gymnopedie by Erik Satie. You may think it's sombre but.for.me.it is one of the most.relaxing pieces of.music.I know.

this album of the same name is just sublime particularly the pairings of Piano with violin and Piano with Cello

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
have a search for Giovanni Sollima - Italian Cellist.
Had the pleasure to see him live a few times - have absolutely no knowledge at all about classical music but I love watching him live. Just sounds out of this world

Rowls
do a search for "Yo-Yo Ma - Bach: Cello"
or indeed just Yo-Yo Ma.
Ophélie Gaillard does Bach and is a good watch as you see the detail
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poCw2CCrfzA
There is plenty of good stuff if you follow the youtube wormhole starting with Yo-Yo Ma Bach.
I was looking for some Cello to sample and tune down for something I was doing. Yo-Yo is a name you don't forget.
You'll spend hours down this wormhole.
Enjoy!

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
One of my favourite pieces.
https://youtu.be/-vSKBXMIPak
The whole of the 21St is wonderful.
The 3rd movement is very jaunty.
This is the performance I wanted to post earlier but couldn't find.
It's the whole concerto, but this young lady utterly nails it.
Amongst the best I've ever heard.

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
I though Bach may be a bit solemn for what Rowls was looking for - and Yo-Yo Ma's interpretations of Bach's Cello suites are indeed sublimeHunterST_BFC wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 8:27 pmRowls

going back to the piano - see if you are inspired by Glen Gould's take on the Goldberg variations of Bach - he recorded them twice in
1955 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5UIckdHBrw
and 1981 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvtoaHaG6ao you can famously hear Gould humming along in this recording
it is the same music but it sound truly different wonderful stuff

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
This Chopin is definitely one to watch.
If this doesn't turn you on then I doubt that classical piano music is your thing.:

I got to a decent level at the piano in my youth thank you very much! Doubt I can play at all now it's been so long.
But no, I've bought a score for a girl who just happens to be a concert standard classical piantist.
It's a hard life, lads, but someone's gotta live it.
Goodnight!

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
For me, it has to be Mahler's Eight 'Symphony of a Thousand' as its also known.
If you get the opportunity to see it live then even better.
Alas it's not performed that much I believe as you need huge choirs
and a full orchestra for it.
But still comes across as a magnificent piece on CD or whatever.

Yes, but I doubt that there's an arrangement for piano and / or cello, and even if there was it would be a bit of be a let-down wouldn't it?jurek wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 10:50 pmFor me, it has to be Mahler's Eight 'Symphony of a Thousand' as its also known.

I don't mind a bit of satie but it feels like listening to debussy in black and white. They both lived at a time when the French were producing some truly beautiful and imaginative material.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 2:45 pmMy favourite piece on the piano is Gymnopedie by Erik Satie. Anyway, Vaughan Williams wrote some not too well known chamber music (meaning it doesn't get played on classic fm etc as they seem to have a limited play list like most other stations based on the premise that most of their listeners like what they already know). I can recommend the emi British Composers CD which has six studies in English folk song for cello and piano. The highlight is the fantasia from the violin sonata in A minor though, which is sublime.

Re: Classical Music Recommendations
Don't have a lot of classical music but what I like/listen to and have is:
RK',s Sherazade, Sibelius, Finladia and Dvořák, New World, I suppose, and not knowing, that only Sherazade would be considered as something for the piano.
Loved listening to some of the links thank you.
