Rigsby in Rising Damp or Reginald Perrin - same actor and more or less the same humour.

Re: Who is the greatest comedy character in British tv history
Basil Fawlty, Mark Corrigan and David Brent would probably be my top three. Honourable mentions for Alan Partridge, Malcolm Tucker and Chabuddy G.

I love Barker's Norman Stanley Fletcher in Porridge. That is possibly my overall choice, although Basil Fawlty is worth a mention. I have a liking for Ade Edmondson's Eddie Hitler too. BONKERS!

In the last 20 years or so: Funniest has to be Father Ted Crilly. Angriest has to be Geoff Tipps from TLoG. Saddest is Les McQueen. Papa Lazarou is certainly the creepiest.

I'd go for Sergeant Bilko if it wasn't for the detail of not being British. (He was shown on British TV, though.)
I'm rewatching Sykes at the moment, and Deryk Guyler's character PC "Corky" Turnbull is excellent.

LoG alone. Paulines Pens, Tubs, Barbara in Taxi.

Alan Partridge for me too.
Loads of very funny ones down the years though
Derek Trotter
Basil Fawlty
David Brent
Brian Potter
Paul Calf
Ron Burgandy
various characters played by Rik Mayall
and many more...like most things what you find funny changes over time but I found Alan Partridge brilliant and funny from the very first time I heard him on Radio 4 before it got on TV on The Day Today...it`s genius.
My current favourite is Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm....absolutely brilliant. Can't believe its not on one of the main channels - unless its to expensive for them to buy.

Agree on Ted Crilly, that still stands up well today, when a lot of other 90's stuff has aged badly.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 12:48 pmIn the last 20 years or so: Funniest has to be Father Ted Crilly. Watched an episode of Father Ted the other week, and i was stunned to see Richard Wilson guest starring as his alter ego Victor Meldrew, i never knew he'd appeared in FT.
Tragic that Dermot Morgan died so young.
I can't comment on the other characters as i didn't watch the shows.

Re: Who is the greatest comedy character in British tv history
I’m so out of touch. I’d sooner watch DI Sleet, brief case wankers mob and Curt Mclure than anyone mentioned so far and they are definitely not greats. Father Ted is good, but I don’t think I’ve ever laughed at Partridge or Brent, too sensitive a cringe reflex I think.
Re: Who is the greatest comedy character in British tv history
Benny Hill could be funny and so too Tomy Cooper
Oh and Les Daeson.
