I have worked abroad in that sort of environment, and yes there was a group of Geordie's, a dodgy Scouser and always a flash Cockney.
Although to be fair to the Geordie's, there was no Oz character among them, but definitely a whining Neville Hope.

The first series were outstanding in Germany. As were the series set in England. Comedy at its finest.

I can't remember the timeline of the (modern) series but the only one that was a bit shite was the jungle one.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 11:01 pmgreat series, but it went flat in the later episodes.
I thought the ones in Cuba and the U.S were pretty good.

Caught the first couple of episodes on some obscure channel a couple of weeks ago.
It's one of those programmes that I can always sit and watch.

Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
So, let's get this right:
Lazy skiving English workers composed of boozed up Geordies, dodgy scousers, flash cockneys trying to give stereotypical Germans the run around?
How many different groups did they offend!!
This sort of out dated offensive garbage should be banned immediately!!

Great writing - one of the first series which gently poked fun at our regional and national stereotypes
Great cast too - ex wrestlers and Shakespearean actors working together

Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
Coincidentally just started re watching the 1st series dvd box set I bought years ago this week.
Ok, it seems slightly dated now but still a good watch because it's well written and you care about the characters.
Thought the 2nd series was the best, will be watching that when I've finished the first one ( and the the opening and closing theme tunes to both are ace)

Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
There’s one exchange between Barry and Oz that my cousin and I refer to all the time.
Oz is making some kind of racket in the stalag:
BARRY: Oi, do yow mind, some of us are trying to get some sleep over ‘ere.
OZ: ********!
BARRY: I was only sayin’
OZ: Double ********!

The one in Spain was class. Oz falling asleep whilst on watch.

That's what made the original series a Classic, the writers (was it Clement & La Frenais?) really got the vibe/setting of the British Construction workers in Germany spot on, someone must've worked with them, there was an 'insiders' eye cast over it. Sadly, whilst some of the episodes in later series were humorous, they never quite caught the reality which the first series did.

I do think that they had to branch out a bit a move with the times though. Even if some of it was a little far fetched, although we have to remember it was TV show.

Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
1st 2 series were nothing short of brilliant ,the writing the brilliant cast and characters ,pretty much all of who went in to successful careers . They got the whole group work thing almost perfect . The “ comeback series” were enjoyable enough but were more a nostalgia trip .
Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
Dusseldorf, Barrys house, Thornley Manor, Barley Mow pub, Allie Frasers villa in Spain. You felt like you actually knew these places and the magnificent seven personally. That is how good it is.
The problem with the bridge series is that they changed the characters too much . Oz and Barry were unrecognisable from the original series.

Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
i think when it began in germany, most of us would have loved to have been part of their group in that hut. surely that's the standard of a great comedy, that we want to be part of it. It was brilliantly scripted and acted by those actors. perfect casting too.

The actors used to get in the Free Trade, Newcastle many Friday evenings. Nail played himself!?

Re: Auf wiedersehen pet
Watched the episode 'Private Lives' from series 1 last night.
There was a scene when Oz was digressing about being in a hotel in Sheffield and he talked about the Newcastle v Burnley semi final and 2 goals from 'Supermac'
My least favourite scene of the whole series..
