Barrow promoted

Post by Marney&Mee » Sat Jun 13, 2020 1:02 pm

Still to be decided if there will be national league play offs for a second promotion slot. National league n and s south champions (points per game) promoted. Only one team going down (Chorley). Fylde chairman has announced it all. Some voting still to be done. Barrow defo up tho

That's a fantastic achievement by them.

"Local derby" against Carlisle will be interesting.

Really pleased for Barrow - would have been a shame if they had missed out on their first genuine chance of a return to the FL in nearly 50 years - Workington next maybe :D

Always good to see the Northern teams doing well, when they'll get the chance to sample life as a league club in front of their fans is another question.

It would be brilliant if Harrogate can join them.

Hasn’t quite a bit of money gone in at Barrow from an American investor?

I didn't realise Ian Evatt was the manager there.

Only seems 5 minutes ago since he was playing at CB for Blackpool.

Believe it or not it’s 7 years since he was at Blackpool. He then played two years at Chesterfield.

The Morecambe Bay derby could prove interesting for the local constabulary, particularly if it's a Saturday.

On 1 May 2014, it was announced that members of the club had voted in favour to allow Dallas businessman Paul Casson to complete a takeover of the club."

On 24 October 2018, Paul Casson announced that he would be stepping down as chairman and selling the club. In a statement, he said that director Paul Hornby would take over as interim chairman.

That's from Wiki. Apparently he did invest a lot and then decided to call it a day.

One of my earliest childhood memories is of my Dad listening to the scores on a Saturday and the name Barrow always amused me. Like a wheelbarrow I used to think. The Scottish names like Stenhousemuir and Cowdenbeath also had a resonance. A bit like the shipping forecast, the names stuck in the young mind never to disappear.

Carson was a Barrow lad made good I think.

I'm delighted to see them back in the league. Once supporters are allowed back, it should be great for an area that has been dealt a rough hand by it's two favoured sports, football and rugby league, in the past.

As for Derbies - I was put right not that long ago that Barrow to morecambe was a lot shorter a journey than Barrow to Carlisle, which says something about how remote Barrow is. Their problem will be attracting players.

Brilliant, just imagine 1000s of fans making that journey

Pleased for Barrow, a real backwater.
Played on Holker st. as a school lad when they were in the old 4th division

If they are paying decent wages they won't have any problem attracting players. They train (or certainly used to) at Hopwood Hall College which is just off the A627M and only go to Barrow on match day.

Great news and they have a reasonble fan base . Hell of a lot of long journeys though with Carlise 2 hours on a coach being one of their “derbies”. Not the easiest place to attract players as it’s the ultimate uk backwater . Though it’s “commutable” from most of the northwest

I think they train somewhere near Rochdale because of the journey to Barrow.

They do indeed - Hopwood Hall college.
I know the physio they use there.

A lot of the players they have recruited live around the Manchester area. Tbh they have kind of bought the league by attracting some of the best players by paying better money than the other teams but still a good achievement and nice to see them in the league

Is that where they train? I've seen us play Rochdale there in a youth team game back in 2013.

Yes - it’s decent facilities. I’ve played there a few times and there were some good pitches.
If you remember the old Bobby Charlton soccer school from the 1980s and 1990s (I think) where kids could book football coaching type week long residential holidays they were at Hopwood Hall.

Great for the town, they’re taking on 1000 more engineers at BAE Maritime this year which is fantastic for an area which is still quite poor. Spent a lot of time there over the years, good people.

Just like the old days!
Burnley in top half of top league
Knobbers and Wovers in second tier but in no danger of going up
Bolton with half ground owned by others not just Co-op this time
Barrow in bottom league
