FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
I saw this yesterday. It's a bit of a special one for me with these games being played on the day I was born.
Amazing attendance at Burnley but look at the monetary gate receipts. Also a very good result showing at the top right.

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Those at tendencies, 40k at Liverpool, no surprise these days, but I don't think they were a first division side then, and 38k at Turf, can you imagine the attendance now against Hartlepool, probably 38 people
Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Attendencies not tendencies
Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Phenomenal attendances. Doesn't appear to be many non-league clubs made it through to this round. I can only see Buxton and Stockton.

Heck.
19k plus watching the Bucks at Doncaster.
Some big gates on show.
22k for Rotherham & Bury!
Also noticeable the Manchester gates before the Red bit became a media built institution.

You didn't miss much Tony. Full squad out too against a mediocre Third Division North team and then we went out in a later round to a second division outfit-don't mention the team. This MB would have been in melt down.

Man City crowd much bigger than Utd.
Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Also interesting is that ‘Bradford’ = Bradford Park Avenue

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
In my early days of watching football there were the two clubs Bradford and Bradford City - when I refer to the current league club in any articles or reports I always add the City to differentiate. Bradford's full name is Bradford (Park Avenue) with the brackets included again from the beginning of this season.

I've just done some searching - the club were dissolved in 1975 having played at Victoria Ground in Stockton-on-Teeshuw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 9:47 amI was working in Stockton in ‘72 and can’t remember them having a team then. I’ll have to check them out.
Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
I always believed their full name was just Bradford. The Park Avenue was an unofficial name used to differentiate them between city. Park Avenue was the name of the ground/area they played at.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 10:31 amIn my early days of watching football there were the two clubs Bradford and Bradford City - when I refer to the current league club in any articles or reports I always add the City to differentiate. Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Seems to pan out for receipts of £1000 for every 10,000 attendees. Around 2shillings(10p) per person. I've seen receipts for a.few years later when I first started attending and I don't think they were that much different then so cost of football must have remained pretty static over quite a number of years.

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Spot on
Just found this: Although officially Bradford Football Club, the club was obliged to append Park Avenue (the location of the club's original stadium) in brackets to its name in 1907 to avoid confusion with Bradford City. That sort of disappeared over the years but, as per my previous post, they re-added it last year.

Yes but the two are connected. Many would have chosen that game over the one down the road on the day.

Is that Don Revie at Man City ?
Gerrie Harrison scored for Hull. He'd aged well by the time he came to us

Yes. Played in the 1955 & 1956 finals for City as a deep lying Centre Forward. Considered as a 'new' tactic in the day.

It was the so called Revie plan in 1956 that played a part in their cup victory against Birmingham City
He played a deep lying centre forward role

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
I noticed the guy who scored for Sheffield Wednesday is Derek Dooley who later in his career lost a leg (allegedly) as a result of the lime mixture used to mark the touchline getting in a laceration on his leg.

Bradford 2 Sheff Wed 1. Which Bradford, City or Park Avenue?
Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
It was more than a laceration. It was a fracture complicated by gangrene I believe when he was 23. He died in 2008 aged 78winsomeyen wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 5:05 pmI noticed the guy who scored for Sheffield Wednesday is Derek Dooley who later in his career lost a leg (allegedly) as a result of the lime mixture used to mark the touchline getting in a laceration on his leg.
I think he was playing at Deepdale when it happened. Went on to manage and Wednesday and then later in his life was Sheffield United's chairman.

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
Derek Dooley did manager Sheffield Wednesday, the only club he played for. He was a 100% Wednesdayite but they sacked him as manager on Christmas Eve. Sheffield United took him on in an administrative role and he eventually became chairman. It is Bramall Lane where you will see Dooley's statue, not Hillsborough.mdd2 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 6:53 amIt was more than a laceration. Difficult to believe attendance of 24,000, Rochdale v Leeds, no way so many could congregate on the mud flats at Spotland!?

One name I’ve just spotted among the goalscorers is Tommy Lawton for Notts County

Other notable goalscorers Wilf Mannion, Middlesbrough and Peter Broadbent, Wolves - both very skilful players.

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
I'm thinking the 'deep lying centre forward' idea probably came as a result of the famous Magyars side of the 50's. Hungary defeated England at Wembley 6-3 and a year later in their homeland 7-1 with Nandor Hidgekuti playing the deep lying No9 for them. England's defence didn't know how to cope without a traditional centre forward up against them. Mind you they had a few quality players around to carry out the tactic.
It may have been given the title of 'Revie plan' but I'm very reluctant to accept anything football wise associated with him.

Other goalscorers to note were Terry Medwin for Swansea(went on to join Spurs?) and would that be Frank O'Farrell for West Ham who went on to manage Man Utd.(George Best) in the early 70's?

Couple of highlights below from the round.
Newcastle 4-2 Aston Villa - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQmhoqJSaqI
Portsmouth 4-0 Lincoln - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9FrERY38qw
Leeds met Bradford Park Avenue in the 4th round that year, would have been a bumper attendance I can imagine but cannot find it.

Re: FA Cup 3rd Round results 1952
You'll be surprised that we only have to go back to the 3rd round game at Sunderland in 2017. A total of nine games with an aggregate attendance of 195,269. That's helped though with two trips to the Etihad with a total of 106,477 at those two games.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 4:00 pmWhen it meant something. Incredible number of spectators.
