My dad held her in such esteem - we should never underestimate the impact she had on our troopsBuxtonclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 10:10 amR. I. P

Re: Dame Vera Lynn
A good life.lived. I can't think there's anyone who didn't hold the highest regard for her. If her songs are played throughout today I, for one, will not tire of them. RIP to a national icon and treasure.
Re: Dame Vera Lynn
RIP Vera my dad loved you. I was just thinking about her the other day and how she would feel when I read the article about changing the name of the White Cliffs of Dover because of BLM. Hopefully she wasn't even aware of it.

Lovely lady and a true national treasure.
One of her best and the words still poignant today as the UK and the rest of the world is engaged in a different type of war..

Re: Dame Vera Lynn
RIP Dame Vera. A wonderful voice and a better personality. Did so much unheralded work both during the war and for the rest of her life.
Re: Dame Vera Lynn
I never met her not even once!
However, her life made a difference to many, at times of need.
For that, we all thank her.
103 is an unbelievable stint. Poignant that she made the VE anniversary.

Should the nation erect a statue as a mark of respect? Surely nobody could object to that.

An inspiration and a comfort to so many during WW11.She was certainly the forces sweetheart and my late father always talked about the time he saw her sing in Burma where he served and where she visited to entertain the troops.
Rest in peace Dame Vera you have lived a full life.

Re: Dame Vera Lynn
My Dad (r.i.p.) who was on the MTB's in the navy, could never understand how she got called the forces sweetheart, he said he didn't know anyone at the time who liked her.
My Uncles agreed with him too. They reckoned it was just the media pushing that idea.

not wishing to sound disrespectful, but my dad said the same, as did his drinking pals who were to a man ALL ex forces from that era.

Re: Dame Vera Lynn
My dad was in Burma (and at Dunkirk) and loved her. I've got a photo he took with a group of soldiers which is on display at home at the moment. Inevitable, that not everyone shares the same view. The Enclosure wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 3:54 pmAn inspiration and a comfort to so many during WW11.She was certainly the forces sweetheart and my late father always talked about the time he saw her sing in Burma where he served and where she visited to entertain the troops.

Re: Dame Vera Lynn
Her willingness to go out to Burma was what really made her mark and anyone who served out there will tell you.
I played at the Burma Star Reunion events in the Royal Albert Hall many times and Vera Lynn was always there and the reception that she got was incredible and a pleasure to behold.
She appeared at many events in connection with service charities over many years and these were always well attended and they loved to hear Vera sing.
There were many others around at the time who entertained and Anne Shelton is one of the unsung people who certainly did her bit and she also received fantastic support whenever she appeared at charity events.

Re: Dame Vera Lynn
Well my dad shared your dad's view COBBLE. He spoke about Dame Vera with such affection I sometimes wondered ........
As Ashington said, she was willing to go out and entertain the troops so good on her for that.
