Daily Express
Just been reading an article by Neil Squires about Brighton v Arsenal being screened at 3pm on a Saturday. Although this is a temporary relaxation he says "why should English football continue to stick by a gentlemans agreement drawn up in the Sixties?. The broadcast landscape has changed dramatically since Burnley chairman Bob Lord persuaded his fellow self - appointed guardians of the domestic game that televising games on a Saturday afternoon represented a threat to attendances". So it seems its all our Bob's fault.

Re: Daily Express
And thankfully he did - live televising of football on a Saturday afternoon would kill lower and non league football.redwasp wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 8:28 pmJust been reading an article by Neil Squires about Brighton v Arsenal being screened at 3pm on a Saturday. I'm certainly no supporter of Bob Lord, I think that the stand should be renamed, but he was right about this. I was reading a magazine called Football League Review, it used to come free with the match day programme, it was dated 1968 and the things Bob Lord said about the direction of the game have come true

Live games are shown in Germany every week on a Saturday afternoon but the stadia were still full (in pre-Coronavirus times)

Bob was right about so many things in Football
Despite his many faults he was a real visionary

Thank goodness we named a stand after him and not a statue.

Re: Daily Express
I've recently re-read his book 'My Fight for Football' and he was advocating a Premier League back in 1963/4.
I dread to think what live 3pm kick offs would have done to us in the wilderness years.
