You obviously didn't see the Olympiacos games then. Did OK in Greece, done by the referee, and probably turned in as good a performance as I saw all season in the home leg. Had that early Vokes chance gone in I am convinced we'd have been in the groups. We couldn't have given it any more than we did so to suggest we had no intention of being in for long is somewhat wide of the mark.summitclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:09 amGive over. We had no intention of bring in the EL for long. A masterstroke as we would most likely have gone down, given that the squad was so sparse.

Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
If ever there was a time to beef up cm and attract better players generally it was in the window that summer. We chose not to. Jack Cork was really struggling in the 1st half of the season after the EL exit. Maybe carrying an injury. We had no one to replace him with.

It was thought, at the time, that Steven Defour would be fine. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.summitclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:31 amIf ever there was a time to beef up cm and attract better players generally it was in the window that summer. Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
History would have suggested relying on Defour was folly, and so it proved sadly. We definitely need a new cm in this window, unless we're going to try Brownhill in the centre, and even then i'd prefer a specialist in that role, it's too pivotal an area to not strengthen, and if we fail to do so we could well pay the price next season, we've just about got away with it in the past 2 seasons, but we can't keep chancing our arm that both Cork & Westwood will stay fit for an entire campaign, that's dicing with fortune too much for me. And if Jeff goes then we don't even have his utility to call on in an emergency, a new cm has to be top of our shopping list this summer, hopefully moving some of the higher-earning fringe players out, will give us some more leverage with any potential incomings, both in terms of fees & wages.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:36 amIt was thought, at the time, that Steven Defour would be fine. Let's hope Joe, with all his experience playing at the top, has helped develop Pope and BPF as top class keepers.

Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
Some may have thought that. Plenty of us didn't, based on his injury record. It was a risk too far, as we said at the time. I agree that the lads put up a show to be proud of in the EL. I will always believe that the Club and maybe the manager were happy to be out at that stage.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:36 amIt was thought, at the time, that Steven Defour would be fine. Our three high profile signings of Hart, Lennon and Crouch were a waste of time. I said it many times on here at the time and see no reason to change my mind.

I got both barrels from a number of people on here for stating Lennon would be a poor signing for us at the time.Vino blanco wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:17 pmOur three high profile signings of Hart, Lennon and Crouch were a waste of time. Something about me being clueless etc.
I honestly thought it would work out for Hart and I understand why we signed Crouch after we sold Vokes.
Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
I thought he did okay when he played, he made some mistakes but also pulled off some terrific saves and kept us in a few games. Let’s face it though, the whole team was a complete shambles in the autumn of 2018, and whilst Hart was part of that, by no means was it all his fault as suggested by a few on this board.
Some of the vitriol and venom aimed towards him was shocking at times. I think many didn’t appreciate that he had previously starred in an advert for shampoo.

I think it is worth saying that despite all this apparent vitriol and venom, wasn’t he leading the player of the year voting when he was left out?ksrclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:20 pmI thought he did okay when he played, he made some mistakes but also pulled off some terrific saves and kept us in a few games. I don’t know, but some of the comments made about him were shocking at times. As though it was all his fault, he’d upset the dressing room, he should never play for us again etc etc.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:25 pmI think it is worth saying that despite all this apparent vitriol and venom, wasn’t he leading the player of the year voting when he was left out?
There were clearly a number of issues at play.

Good to see us moving on the dead wood ie Lennon /Hart , both who could have a good swansong elsewhere ( Hart is still high class whatever the haters on here think ) Brady/Jeff/Lowts/Bards all present slightly different issues though I expect 2 of those to leave .Surely Celtic a great fit for Jeff.

Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
I was worried when we signed him as he’d been poor for a number of years. However the pedigree was there as he’d been an excellent keeper prior to this and we’ve got a very good record of improving goalkeepers lately.
Sadly it didn’t work out, it will be interesting to see where he ends up. I can’t see him being first choice at the top level again.

Tbf neither Lennon nor Crouch were high profile in the slightest, they were always cameo players ,though I hoped for better from Lennon who we rarely used to his strengths .Vino blanco wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:17 pmOur three high profile signings of Hart, Lennon and Crouch were a waste of time. Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
Lennon and Crouch were both former England internationals, who had played for 'big' clubs, that's high enough profile for me.

Hart played 75 times for England, 266 times for Man City.Vino blanco wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:50 pmLennon and Crouch were both former England internationals, who had played for 'big' clubs, that's high enough profile for me.

Fair play to Joe as he came in when we needed a keeper , now maybe been talked about before but we have 3 England keepers at the club at any one time , not sure if other clubs had the same without googling it .

Taxi for Hart then. Or, and I'm sure I'm not alone here, I'll drive him. A real Marmite signing. Proof, if ever needed, that football is a game of opinions.

Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
He needs to play, that's why he came here, but unfortunately for him Nick is just a better keeper now.
He was our player of the season up to the Everton game, so no one can say he was a bad signing. He seemed to accept that he wasn't going to start again with good grace, and still pulled for the team.
I'm not sure he'll get another Prem club, probably better off abroad. Wherever he goes, thanks Joe, and good luck.

I think Arsenal would be a good destination for Joe.
Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
Problem for Hart was who he was up against, two of the best keepers to grace the club, nice people and extremely popular with the fans also a lot of fans believed the press generated criticism of Hart. In fairness to him he always kept his council and pushed both Heaton and Pope. Hope he gets something however I think the States would love him

He think's he's the best keeper in the world and somehow hard done by.
Reality is he's been constantly beaten by a couple of lags dragged from League two...

Was it in his contract that he had to be part of the Matchday squad if fit (at least in the league)

Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
Thanks Joe.
Like Lennon you did your best for us, played an important albeit limited role and had a fantastic career prior to Burnley.
Note to future big names considering a move to Burnley. You won’t be liked by the envious majority on here for some reason. You needn’t read this though as Hart, Lennon, Crouch and co will let you know themselves.
This is a small club for small players.

Youd think that would have suited Lennon, though perhaps not so much Crouch or indeed Hart
Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
Didn't Lindegaard have a thigh strain after the Aberdeen games? Took a few weeks to clear up if I remember rightly?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 10:50 amYou need three goalkeepers, and when we kicked off 2017/18 season we had Heaton, Pope & Legzdins which was fine, Legzdins coming in to replace Robinson. Then Heaton got the injury so in came Lindegaard, again fine. Move on a year and we have all four with Pope getting injured at Aberdeen. We still had three, albeit Tom nursing a sore calf. Lindegaard did more than OK in the two Aberdeen games so I'm not sure why we went for another goalkeeper unless they had reservations about Lindegaard playing too often although we'd just given him a new deal.

Going to MLS may work for Hart, however I'm sure he'd expect to be paid as a "designated player" or whatever they call the privileged team members. I doubt a goalie could command a higher salary.

If his agent can't sort out a well paid contract with that information then he needs a new agent

Re: Joe Hart To Leave At The End Of June
Not sure how true it is or if it’s because they are out of contract at the end of June and they are just putting 2 and 2 together but the Sun are reporting that Joe is an emergency target for Arsenal to cover the injured Bernd Leno and in the article they say that he will now leave Burnley at the end of June alongside Phil Bardsley, Aaron Lennon, Jeff Hendrick and Adam Ledgzins.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football ... -transfer/
Wonder if Hendrick, Bardsley and Ledgzins have also rejected a short term contract as well or if it’s just lazy journalism. Should be interesting seeing the team sheet tomorrow night for any clues.

Well Hart can't sign for Arsenal this season. so if he's an emergency for Leno, then Leno's injury must be bad,RBFC wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:06 pmNot sure how true it is or if it’s because they are out of contract at the end of June and they are just putting 2 and 2 together but the Sun are reporting that Joe is an emergency target for Arsenal to cover the injured Bernd Leno and in the article they say that he will now leave Burnley at the end of June alongside Phil Bardsley, Aaron Lennon, Jeff Hendrick and Adam Ledgzins.

I wouldn't be if all the ooc players leave on 30th June, if they go they go, the timing's not ideal, but in a normal season this wouldn't be a major talking point, i'd rather have players who are committed to the Clarets long-term than guys just going through the motions, and picking up their paycheck.

With Hart and Lennon now definitely leaving I hope we use the cash to put a tempting deal Hendricks way. It will save us a lot of money if he signs on and there will be less pressure for Brownhill to step up immediately to fill his place

I'm not averse to us offering Hendrick a decent deal, but he needs to understand that he's not irreplaceable, and we won't break the bank to keep him.Giftonsnoidea wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:30 pmWith Hart and Lennon now definitely leaving I hope we use the cash to put a tempting deal Hendricks way. Also do we actually know if the reason Hendrick has rejected our terms is purely due to money, there could other reasons, length of contract offered, his desire to join Celtic, chief amongst them at a guess.
