1969/70
Someone on FB uploaded pages from Rothmans Football Yearbook for 69/70 season. We started the campaign with a 0-0 away at Derby and it appears Mellor was replaced in goal by Probert. Was the keeper injured or sent off?

Re: 1969/70
If he had been sent off wouldn’t (Probert) be against the player that game off?

Probert came on as the substitute but Latcham went in goal. Mellor, on his debut, had suffered an injury.

Re: 1969/70
We’d sort of moved on from the old 2-3-5 formation by then but Doc would have been in midfield with that line up.
Back four of Angus, Waldron, Todd, Latcham
Midfield: Thomas, O’Neil, Docherty, Kindon.
I’d think Coates then in an advanced role behind Casper.

I was there but I'm afraid I can't remember our exact formation!

Doc was in midfield when he captained the Youth Cup winners. Moved to RB later.

Neither can I. Just made some assumptions based on the line up.lakedistrictclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 1:37 pmI was there but I'm afraid I can't remember our exact formation!

Re-Michael Docherty. I will always remember Tommy Docherty being interviewed years ago and being asked why his son had signed for Burnley after being in the the youth team at Chelsea. He replied that he had sent him up there to learn how to play football.

I think he'd been on the ground staff at Chelsea but it was our youth team he played for. Doc Snr did make those comments though.dermotdermot wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 3:42 pmRe-Michael Docherty. Good spot. Everton got off to a winning start, they won the league that year.

I see Lazarus was substituted for Crystal Palace but subsequently made an amazing recovery.

Decent win for them too given Alan ball wasn't playing.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 4:18 pmGood spot. Everton got off to a winning start, they wonce the league that year.

Re: 1969/70
I went to the game but don’t remember that. However I do remember Frank Casper missing a penalty and then bumping into Colin Waldron in the Motorway Service Station in the way back and asking him about it. Waldron very diplomatically said it was just one of those things.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 1:09 pmProbert came on as the substitute but Latcham went in goal. It was also old Big Ed’s first game as a manager in the top flight.

When Probert came on and Latcham went in goal i would assume Docherty would drop back to replace Latcham at Left Back with Probert in midfield .

Re: 1969/70
Probably, although it was very close to the end of the game when Mellor went off. I don't think Latcham had anything to do.ClaretnGreen wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 3:41 pmWhen Probert came on and Latcham went in goal i would assume Docherty would drop back to replace Latcham at Left Back with Probert in midfield .

Gerry Queen scored - he being the man who, possibly apocryphally, was subject of the newspaper placard headline "Queen in brawl at Palace".
