Dwight McNeil
Its easy to feel frustrated with Neil, and tonight there were a couple of occasions when his lapses could have led to goals. But respect to this young man-he was in the right place to stop a Watford goal that could have seen them go on and take 3 points. Not long after a bit of magic and his cross led to a well taken goal by Jay and 3 points for us. Don't know if anyone saw the stats about him on SKY but they were dam impressive in terms of assists and crosse The way we play we will always come under pressure but in Dwight we have a game changer. Full marks to SD and the coaches for giving him the chance and developing him as they have

Re: Dwight McNeil
No frustration whatsoever, the lad continues to make a far bigger impact than most of us could have imagined.

It wasn’t Dyche genius that led to Dwight getting his chance. Just injuries. I find that worrying and astounding. I wonder if we have any more in the building!

Re: Dwight McNeil
most players his age play the odd 5 mins here and there or go out on loan, he was thrown in because of the injuries but for the most part he has impressed in every game, enjoy him whilst we can
Re: Dwight McNeil
He looked leggy tonight (more than normal) half a yard off the pace for large parts of the game. That said, he stopped a certain goal and created ours. I think it was just match sharpness that looked missing.
My lad made an interesting observation though, he mentioned that Foden looked very sharp from the off in both City games, I suppose that’s why Foden is the star he’s going to be.

Re: Dwight McNeil
I’m not convinced Dyche should be given “full marks” where it comes to Dwight.
After been given a chance and performing very well against Olympiacos and Man Utd, he was then dropped and we went on a run of 3 wins 3 draws 11 defeats. Bottom of the league.
Finally brought back in- at a last resort it seemed by Dyche who hadn’t even bothered to sub him on- he started vs West Ham, and we won 6 drew 3 out of the next 9 to virtually guarantee safety.

Surely now is the perfect time to play some youngsters, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain

A tad unfair different calibre of players around foden who keep the ball for fun less running i would imagine..Zlatan wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:05 pmHe looked leggy tonight (more than normal) half a yard off the pace for large parts of the game. Re: Dwight McNeil
With our growing injury list, we may not any choice but to play some youngsters. It's also asking a lot for the same XI to keep going every few days, especially in this heat, when the opposition can make up to 5 changes, it will take it's toll eventually.

Re: Dwight McNeil
Why don't we just have a thread for each player? Its confusing and harder to search when there are so many threads with the same name.
Just a quick search shows so many on McNeil already :search.php?keywords=mcneil&terms=all&au ... mit=Search
It just gets silly otherwise, you get a bunch of threads created by different people with the same topic without searching for existing threads first.
If this was reddit, the threads would just get auto deleted for spam..

Re: Dwight McNeil
Phil Foden is a great player. Maybe Dwight McNeil will also be a great player. City didn't include Foden in their team tonight. He's able to have a rest. McNeil wouldn't get that chance at Burnley - at least not through this 9 game mini-season.Zlatan wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:05 pmHe looked leggy tonight (more than normal) half a yard off the pace for large parts of the game. Nobody seems to know for sure, Paul. People think they have the answer, is it linked to TV income or not, then someone comes along to contradict them. It's not helping in relation to the planning for next year I'd presume, for smaller clubs like ours.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:39 pmIs it still £2 million a place this season, or has that been changed with the covid-19 break?

His crosses and wing play just make you want to get a ball and play in the front street.

Re: Dwight McNeil
You realise that was the only reason Rashford got his chance at United. Happens at all clubs not just Burnley. The stakes are too high at this level to take risks on unknown quantities, unless you’re in the rare position to do so (which ironically, we are currently).Longsidebogs wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 9:58 pmIt wasn’t Dyche genius that led to Dwight getting his chance. Re: Dwight McNeil
When he gets space with his left foot his crossing is top drawer and makes you realise why many top clubs will be after his signature.

Not to mention our Euro aspirations! Shhh!TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:21 pmYou say "nothing" to play for but with each place higher in the league worth £2m, that is just not the case.
Re: Dwight McNeil
Zero frustration ever with Mcneil from me, the guys end product and goal involvement is incredible, he must have more assists and goals in the past 6 months than Brady and Lennon combined in their entire Burnley career. Might be a blessing in disguise for Mcneil that the Euros have been postponed 1 year.
Re: Dwight McNeil
If it is, then 3 points could be the difference of and extra 6-8m with how tight the league is.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:39 pmIs it still £2 million a place this season, or has that been changed with the covid-19 break?
Also if the papers are to be believed, then Dyche will presumably want to finish as high as possible to improve that already impressive CV.
On a seperate note, I'm not sure how the player bonuses are sorted, is it final position then games played with some sort of % divvy up.
Might effect those that have decided to leave before the end of the season, as they wont actually be here a the end of the season, and only contributed to around 75% of it.

Re: Dwight McNeil
I'm with you there, MACCA. If we can get a result on Monday and against Sheff Utd the Clarets will have a shout for 7th - which will be Europa, again! We need to keep a happy "squad" - well, team really, as we've not many squad players left - and avoid injuries (over and above the ones we already have).MACCA wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 12:41 pmIf it is, then 3 points could be the difference of and extra 6-8m with how tight the league is.

Yes, a lot to play for - and, not all for SD's cv. I don't see SD leaving. A little bit of "frustration" and "anxiety" aimed at the Chairman, but SD knows that these things don't do anyone any good, if they aren't "parked" as soon as they were said. And, if SD can get "no money" Burnley into mid-table and Europe once in a while, he should be aiming for a "big 6" club to match his ambitions - certainly one in the PL with the ambition to be "top 6," so, maybe Leicester or Wolves if/when they need a new manager....
My view on player bonuses, they are stacked to maintaining Premier League status, with possibly 50:50 split on the extra money for finishing position. Why do I say this? (1) Logical structure for Burnley wages, so pay cuts if relegated and bonus if not relegated; (2) higher finish, something for the players but also something for the club and the future; (3) did you see the way we played at Arsenal in Wenger's last game, an "on the beach" performance, if ever I've seen one.
I'd be surprised if the contracts had a clause that cut bonuses for players who didn't sign an extension for July. I doubt anyone in football would have seen covid-19 delaying the finish of the season (it will be different for new contracts going forward). I don't think we'd have seen any of the ooc walking away if there was money available for being in the squad in July.

Re: Dwight McNeil
He's turned into one of our best players. Certainly one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Sadly, he'll leave and we'll be forever searching for that left midfield/winger again.
Frustrated? Not me.
Seems a fairly level-headed lad, too.

Re: Dwight McNeil
Perhaps it's just me but every time I see him now I see a very talented young man itching to play further infield, a No 10.midfield role if you like giving him.license to go and look for the ball and get the team forward. Would be interested in other people's views on this.
Re: Dwight McNeil
Agree completely. His goals have tended to come when he's driven through the centre. His crossing is too good of an asset to ignore at the moment though. It looks like Dyche has been bringing him inside towards the end of games recently.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 3:34 pmPerhaps it's just me but every time I see him now I see a very talented young man itching to play further infield, a No 10.midfield role if you like giving him.license to go and look for the ball and get the team forward. So far as I've seen it's £2m less a share of the refund. I imagine it works out at something like 15% less as a rough guess.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:39 pmIs it still £2 million a place this season, or has that been changed with the covid-19 break?

Yes I think Dwight could well end up through the middle. We know he can be decent defensively as well and he is tall and reasonably strong on the ball so if he beefs up he could be a proper central midfielder. He’s alright on the wing though

Re: Dwight McNeil
Bit lightweight for me currently for midfield. He does like to cut in off that right flank and fizz in a shot. Done it a few times for us. I like the idea of him having a roaming role but that would require a player adept at rotating and able to fill in/switch. We're a bit too one dimensional for him to do that at present. If we could nab a technically gifted winger - cum- midfielder and a holding midfielder. I think he'd be able to roam more freely.

Man City interested apparently.
Re: Dwight McNeil
Won’t benefit him from a footballing point of view if he leaves too soon. He can really crack on with us for next season and develop into an even better player. We’ve proved we can get players into England squads and Southgate is certainly happy to watch Burnley players.

Re: Dwight McNeil
We know this and he knows this. Dwight is not stupid and he’s well guided by his dad. He will be able to get up to £50,000 a week here and that is more than enough for a 19/20 year old. By waiting another season he will know that he will be a better player and will be able to get more money both himself and for the club.Blackrod wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2020 10:51 amWon’t benefit him from a footballing point of view if he leaves too soon. I'm still frustrated that goal ,Wood's thunderous header from Dwight's fantastic cross, was disallowed...not so much because we needed it to win the game ,as we won easily anyway, but because it was a thing of rare beauty.
