Think Heats made an even better save not long after that against Southampton? Was it a Charlie Austin header?

I always prefer saves where a keeper has to move and stretch to reach the ball. As good as the Heaton save at Old Trafford was it was a case of making himself big rather than agility to get to the ball.

As former (low quality) 5-a-side goalie, I always felt there was a difference between a save and a 'block' as you describe above, where the keeper makes himself big and hopes for the best.

Tony Waiters against Coventry.

My memory could be wrong but he was lobbed by someone like Ernie Hunt, the ball went over Waiters but he kept his eye on it and dived backwards as the trajectory of the ball went over him and then downwards. Somehow he managed to scoop it out and away to safety.

Then again he may have nearly saved this and Coventry scored!

This must have been the game:

Hi.
Chris Pearce made a few at Bradford in the Leyland Daf in 1991.
Marlon Beresford made a few in home games against Rotherham and Plymouth in 1992.

This instantly popped into my head, I was right behind it and I'd given up on it, looked a certain goal.
Tremendous save

Tom Heaton from Charlie Austin at Southampton for me by a considerable distance. Not only is it the best save I have seen from a Burnley keeper, it is one of the best saves I have seen from any keeper.

Watching that game on Sky, I was just waiting for the net to ripple and the crowd to go up .... I wouldn't say this lightly, but that save is almost " Banksian " .... :D

Adam Blacklaw v Sheff Wed
Adam Blacklaw v Reims
Tony Waiters v Oxford
Alan Stevenson v Liverpool
Nik Michipoulos v Scunthorpe
Tom Heaton v Southampton

As good as Tom’s save was at Man U, the save to deny Charlie Austin in the previous away game was something else.

Hi.
Chris Pearce made a few at Bradford in the Leyland Daf in 1991.
Marlon Beresford made a few in home games against Rotherham and Plymouth in 1992.
The greatest double save of all time! Chris dived low to his left to make the first save and the ball went out of the area to another Bradford City player who wellied it into the opposite top corner - somehow Chris leaped up and high to his right to tip the ball over the bar at full stretch. It seemed that he had been granted the power of flight! Couldn't believe what I was seeing. He certainly danced that night. Lancs Evening Telegraph rated him an unprecedented '10' the following day's report.

....and Rocket Ron Futcher scored the winner if my memory serves me correctly.

Mentioned by CT above.
The Alan Stevenson save from Peter Cormack, in front of the Kop, was mind blowing.

If Stevenson's was the one at Anfield in front of the kop in our 3-0 cup defeat, I'm in complete agreement.

Alan Stevenson against Coventry City at the Turf. Colin Stien I think was the player he thwarted.

I didn't see much of Alan Stevenson but I think the best Burnley keeper since Colin McDonald is now at Villa.
Colin's positional sense was so good that out of the world saves from him were rare.
I still think one of the most important saves was from Nick Pope when he saved the penalty against Leicester, IMO that was the turning point of our 19-20 season.

Alan Stevenson in the 1972-73 promotion season. We were under the cosh at Turf Moor against Bristol City in a game which finished 1-1, but in all fairness, it could have been 1-5. Stevenson produced a save low to his right which was later compared to Gordon Banks's 1970 World Cup save from Pele.

As much as I try think back, it's the clangers I remember.....Like Mark Kendall at Blackpool. I guess keepers get used to that.

Too many individual saves to make a choice from, but surely the greatest display by a Clarets keeper was from Harry Thomson, the "God in a green Jersey"in Naples in 1967.
A world class display, in which he made around a dozen great saves, including a peno from the great Altafini.
Harry was abused and spat on for his troubles, but they couldn't take away his performance. 8-)

Legendary stuff.

Marlon's save from Jan Molby(I think) in the cup? Long ranger in front of the kop, looked in all the way, and Beresford came from nowhere to tip it wide. Anyone remember that?

Heaton's best was definitely from Austin at Southampton.

One of the best I ever saw was Beresford from a deflected Jan Molby shot at Liverpool in the cup. He was wrongfooted but still managed to adjust and tip it round the post.

Heatons at Southampton from Charlie boy made your jaw drop. I was dead in line with the post to where Austin headed it and I’d already accepted it was a goal but how Tom got down to tip it round the post was mind blowing. I remember seeing Ben Mee look at Tom probably thinking how the f... did you do that!!

I don't know about the best, but the most important must still be Neenan's in the orient game.

And i seem to recall a vital Chris Woods stop in the relegation shoot out against Plymouth, which saved our skins that season.

Heats has so many to his name, but that display at OT, must rank as his all time best, he was inspired that day, and you felt whatever Utd threw at him, usually Zlatan, he wouldn't be beaten, and he wasn't.

We have come to expect world class saves from Heaton and Pope - they have played for England. Pulling off a Worldie when you are a 4th division quality goal keeper must be more of an achievement?

When I saw this thread title earlier, I've been trying to remember who that was against.
Recall saying to my dad at the time it was like the famous Banks one.

I was also at Bradford when Pearce had the game of his life and everyone else in the crowd's life, it was a mindblowing display.

Honourable mention for Tom v Saints but for me the performance that the magnificent Brian Jensen put in at home to Reading when we somehow won 1-0 is the best I've ever seen and certainly put to bed any of the Kiraly is better than beast guff.

As above. I don't remember the fantastic saves as much as the dreadful performances. Heats save v Southampton and Man Utd stand out. Seen some shockers down the years mind.

Great night that. I was in the lower tier in the away end. Not the best view when we were defending the home end but I cam just remember one save where Pearce's arm just rose from nowhere to tip one over. That must have been his best night as a player. One save after another.

Not certain as to what was the BEST save, but I have to go with Cajun and say that the bravest has to be Harry in that game. The Battle of Naples.

A Tuesday night in 2008..we beat Reading 1-0 through a goal from Robbie Blake . I remember the Beast making a truly fantastic save that night but can't find any video so if you can't remember you'll just have to take my word for it !!

One of a series of outstanding stops that night stalbans, the one you refer to was a point blank tip on to the post from a certain Andre Bikey.
