Re: Minepalois police department to be abolished
It's going to be replaced my some other policing set up though - otherwise it's back to "wild west" days with everybody openly carrying a gun & fastest draw wins.
With no police, the winners would be gun-sellers. I think gun sales are already doing great in USA as people begin to worry about protecting their own homes and families from mobs.

Re: Minepalois police department to be abolished
Stupid idea.
They're going to dismantle the police force and replace it with licenced peace keepers..
Honestly they should look at major police reforms instead.

Wasn’t there a group in USA some years ago who were like vigilantes and got uniformed up to protect their neighbourhoods? I think they came to the uk for a while too.

Re: Minepalois police department to be abolished
Too many people on here are jumping to conclusions about what defunding the police means in America. What you have to remember is that most American police forces have been militarised and as a consequence, they adopt military tactics. Defunding means doing away with the military side and policing by consent.
Minneapolis is not the first locale to break up a department, but no cities as populous have ever attempted it. Minneapolis City Council members haven't specified what or who will replace it if the department disbands but Camden, New Jersey, may be the closest thing to a case study they can get.
The city, home to a population about 17% of Minneapolis' size, dissolved its police department in 2012 and replaced it with an entirely new one after corruption rendered the existing agency unfixable
Before its police reforms, Camden was routinely named one of the most violent cities in the US. Now, seven years after the old department was booted (though around 100 officers were rehired), the city's crime has dropped by close to half. Officers host outdoor parties for residents and knock on doors to introduce themselves. It's a radically different Camden than it was even a decade ago.
Training for new recruits emphasizes deescalation, and the department's use of force policy makes clear that deadly force is the last option.
Sounds like a much better idea than the current system in the rest of America to me.

Depends how you look at it.
You could say Trump created the environment where the officer felt comfortable to act like he did.

Thats one hell of a reach.
Newsflash: there was horrific police brutality in the Obama administration, just as there has been in every single one.

Re: Minepalois police department to be abolished
100 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend.
They don't need defunding. They need MORE funding.
Look at how Giuliani sorted out New York with more offices on the beat in violent areas.
Homicides went down from 2500/year to 500/year.

I've spent 20 years in the actual military and fought in 2 wars, so no, I'm pretty sure I'm not making it up. An automatic rifle and some posh body armour doesn't make you the military.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 9:44 pmBefore you make rash uneducated statements, I suggest you look at this.

You obviously haven't a clue about the stuff the American Police now have then. Did you even bother to read the link? I doubt it.box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 9:52 pmI've spent 20 years in the actual military and fought in 2 wars, so no, I'm pretty sure I'm not making it up. Oh, and being in the British military doesn't mean you know about the American Police than other people. I was in the Gulf during the 70s (Oman) before most people knew there was a Gulf. I ended up being shot and casevaced out, but that doesn't mean I know more than other people who bother to read good articles. But at least I try to deal in facts, not hysteria.
Look at the chart on this page with regard to military spending for the police. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... tary-units

Re: Minepalois police department to be abolished
Aye, I skimmed through your conspiracy theory laden article and I still don’t see the resemblance between any US PD and a military force. The SWAT may just about resemble a bunch of drop shorts, but your average copper? No.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 10:02 pmYou obviously haven't a clue about the stuff the American Police now have then. Did you even bother to read the link? I doubt it.

When the US coppers get synchronised network enabled joint fires with 5th and 6th gen technology to suppress a peer level enemy, then I’ll worry about them.

Since 1997, the US Department of Defense has transferred more than $7.2bn in military equipment to law enforcement agencies. The only person who tried to slow it down was Obama.

Re: Minepalois police department to be abolished
some of the police squads over here have better equipment and more of it than some of the units in the US Army !! I've had this exact conversation with the 3 mil lads I know over here, 2 Army and 1 USAF - they obviously say that the biggest difference is the level of training and responsibility they have compared to the Police, but make no mistake, in terms of basic military grade equipment some Police forces have plenty !box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 10:30 pmAye, I skimmed through your conspiracy theory laden article and I still don’t see the resemblance between any US PD and a military force. What they need to do is sort out the guns. If the police turn up to every incident thinking the suspect is armed then it’s no surprise (or criticism) that they have guns ready too.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 9:42 pm100 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend.
