Our front line vs Palace
With Jay Rod potentially doubtful, how will we line up.
Vydra and McNeil? Or Vydra and Thompson.
I’m leaning more towards the second option as at least it doesn’t change anything in our midfield.

Not a chance will one of the youngsters start. I’d imagine it will be 4-5-1 with pieters on the left and brownhill inside.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Suspect Dwight will play behind Vydra, with Peiters on the left. Long to be an emergency striker if needed.
Re: Our front line vs Palace
Echo the above. Can't see us starting Thompson. 4-5-1 with if Jay is not fit.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Your probably right. It’s just a shame we going to play LB out of position instead of giving the young kid a chance
Re: Our front line vs Palace
If we go 4411 I'd like to put Peiters as the LB , Taylor LW, and McNeil in the free role in behind the forward.
Might also be good to help nullify Zaha. Taylor has that bit more skill , pace and crossing ability, so I'd play him infront of Peiters for me if we were having to play them both.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
My first thought was as Macca posted above. On further thought for all the marauding Taylor does how many assists and goals has he got? Pieters has barely played and has a few of each.
If JRod doesn’t play, and I think he will, I’d go with how we finished on Thursday.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Pieters looked comfortable on Thursday, a natural footballer, as you'd expect of the Dutch.
Cahill and Milejovic are big strong lads in the air. If Jay isn't playing, I'd play 2 fast little uns, and keep the ball on the deck.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
The fact Pieters has come on twice recently says thats plan B if Jay is injured. My feeling is Jay starts, and will play until half time or two thirds of game, then Pieters comes on. Failing that, Pieters starts wide and Dwight plays just behing Vydra. We are down to the bones

I believe he is, which is good news for us.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 10:45 amMight be wrong but I’m pretty sure zaha is out injured.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Pieters has actually played wide left before. He’s clearly able to get a good ball in, even if he’s not the most athletic. I don’t think he’s at all a bad option to have. Could Brady or Gudmundsson be back soon? I think jay should be alright but if not will be interesting to see Dwight play in more of a free role.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Hodgson said in his press conference yesterday that he was hopeful Zaha and Benteke would be fit to play.
Re: Our front line vs Palace
Pieters looked good when he came on and he can certainly cross. If no Jay Rod I’d play him left and move Brownhill inside. Keep Taylor in position.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
I think we once tried Taylor further forward and it didn't work at all.
I don't agree about crossing BTW. This is Taylor's weakness at present. Great going forward but he has very few assists in his games for us. Pieters has however proved a good crosser of the ball on several occasions.
Statistics don't tell the full story but Pieters has 3 assists to Taylor's 0 so far this season even though he's played fewer games.

But Taylor has been more indirectly involved with goals like against Leicester where his cross deflected off a Leicester player, and the countless corners he wins.
Re: Our front line vs Palace
It's funny because when we signed Pieters didn't Stoke fans tell us he was a decent defender but useless at crossing?
His crossing has been his biggest attribute for us!

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Taylor gets us up the pitch much much better than Pieters can. He wins a lot of corners and free kicks from his lung bursting runs - officially they don’t count as assists as he does not take the dead ball situation that he won for us.
His crossing will improve but to be honest that’s not what his game is about - he combines with Dwight really well too. No coincidence Dwight plays better when Taylor plays

Couldn’t we push Charlie up and play Pieters at LB, Dwight in behind Vyds? Hoping JRod is fit though!

I guess that that's why I said "Statistics don't tell the full story". I do think that Pieters is a better crosser though and Taylor could improve in this area.Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 11:48 amBut Taylor has been more indirectly involved with goals like against Leicester where his cross deflected off a Leicester player, and the countless corners he wins.
Taylor the better all-round player of course.
(I think this has been discussed before, and a point was made that Pieters tends to get the ball into the box much sooner and quicker, whereas Taylor likes to get down towards the bye-line)

I think that's spot on, and that's why Taylor should remain at full back.TVC15 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 11:52 amTaylor gets us up the pitch much much better than Pieters can. Re: Our front line vs Palace
I wouldn't put Taylor left mid. He just simply isn't a left sided midfielder. I think people automatically think he would be a better option than Pieters out there because he is quicker. Taylor is our best left back - please leave well alone.
As for Thompson starting; no chance. Hopefully Jay is fit anyway.....

Re: Our front line vs Palace
Fair point. Would also destabilise the defence as well as midfield and up front, which is the last thing we need. Always crosses my mind though because Pieters is seen as a more traditional LB vs Taylor who is a more progressive.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 12:20 pmI wouldn't put Taylor left mid. Dyche said JRod was taken off as a precaution, so hopefully he’ll be fit. Also said Wood was ahead of the curve. Given we can’t fill our subs bench, should be good to see Wood back on it, even if there’s no intention to play him, would offer a certain fear factor.

Re: Our front line vs Palace
If Zaha does play he will be up against Lowton not Taylor or Pieters. Zaha is a left sided player. You could play either of Lowton or Bardsley and he'd run rings round either as they both have a thing for backing off and diving in..and we know how much Zaha likes falling over with the slightest contact....or even none.
We have seen late on in both games the alternative SD thinks is best. Pieters left and McNeil in behind. Problem is we would lose McNeils crossing ability.

..Lowton.....Tarks......Mee.......Pieters
.Brownhill...Westy .....Cork.......Taylor
...........................McNeil......... .....
................ Vydra..........................
In a game earlier in the season Taylor was bombing on and he and McNeil were too close to each other to play effectively.
Dwight moved inside and ran the show, sure he scored but it all seems so long ago I can’t remember the game, and Taylor got space to play.
If Vydra keeps trying to break the line it would create a hole between defence and midfield for Dwight to play.
Was it Bournemouth at home

Re: Our front line vs Palace
It might be an idea to keep Jayrod back ready for the Sheffield United game and experiment with Erik left midfield and Dwight given a free role behind Vydra. If it works Ok they could repeat that at Anfield.

Not necessarily the case. Hodgson often uses Zaha cutting in from the right.Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 1:17 pmIf Zaha does play he will be up against Lowton not Taylor or Pieters. I seem to recall that Zaha tore us apart from the opposite wing when we lost 3-1 at home last season? (Schlupp played on the left I think and scored from a Zaha cross)

Yes. Play for a draw at Palace. We could try and win it at the end, with Jay coming on. Then beat Sheff U Sunday.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 1:21 pmIt might be an idea to keep Jayrod back ready for the Sheffield United game and experiment with Erik left midfield and Dwight given a free role behind Vydra. This is a couple of days ago, but it's the most recent article i could find.UnderSeige wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 2:55 pmIs there no chance of Wood or Barnes returning? Are they not in training yet?
Burnley boss Sean Dyche is hoping Jay Rodriguez will be fit for the trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.
The 30-year-old scored the only goal of the game in Thursday's 1-0 win over Watford with a sublime diving header 17 minutes from time but was replaced soon after.
Rodriguez took a knock to the ankle but was also suffering from a tight hamstring. He is one of only two fit senior strikers at the club along with Matej Vydra.
And the Clarets will be keen to have the England international available at Selhurst Park and Dyche hopes Rodriguez will recover.
"We hope it is nothing serious but we re running out of players rapidly so we had to take him off," said the Clarets chief.
"I will find out more today but we are hoping it is not drastic."
The Clarets will remain without injured quartet Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Robbie Brady for the trip to Selhurst Park.
But Dyche is hopeful to have some bodies returning in time for the visit of Sheffield United to Turf Moor on Sunday week.
"There is an outside chance," he said,
"We are hopeful Robbie will train this week. Woody is doing well and is in front of the curve but we are being careful because we want him to be right.
"Barnesy is behind the curve. Johann is doing well."
So hopefully we should have a stronger bench against Sheff Utd at least, even if none of that quartet are fit to start.
Sounds to me like Wood will play a part this season, and maybe the 2 wingers, but Barnesy might not be seen until next season, there's no point risking him now we're safe.
