Matt Lowton

Post by huw.Y.WattfromWare » Mon Jun 29, 2020 10:18 pm

Haven’t seen it posted elsewhere but mentioned on comms he has a stress fracture of the foot and is out for the season.
Thank goodness Bardsley signed.

It worked out well. Bardsley & Brownhill did a brilliant job on Zaha, who has always been a thorn in our side

That's why we need 2 quality players in every position, Lowton missed out tonight, so Bards stepped in seamlessly, and contributed to a clean sheet.

This illustrated precisely why Bardsley was such an important signing, even if only for 12 months.

If it's a stress fracture as reported, i doubt Lowton will play again this term. I'm sure we'll cope for 6 games though.

Having injections to numb the pain can end up causing longer term damage. Managing an injury can also end up with not playing to potential - look at Barnes this season.

We're more than safe, anything we do now is a bonus.
Would much rather have Lowton fit for next season, particularly as there's likely to be a shorter break between the seasons this year so less recovery time.

As for Bardsley, thought that he's excelled this year and did well again last night. The way that he and Brownhill managed Zaha was the best I've seen us deal with him.

Fair point. I'm just looking up the table and would like us to have a stronger bench so we can rotate a bit.

Agree with Brownhill. Outstanding last night. So pleasing to see.

Agreed!

Fortunately, Zaha was very lazy and more intent on falling over, than risking a kick. Looks like he wanrs away again.

As tfs says, the strong pain-killing injections are not good for the person's long-term health. Best avoided if at all possible.

Dyche was asked in one of the interviews after the game, he said it was bad - I suspect it's season over for him

Hendrick perhaps, but Lennon's been a bit part player, and he's now 33, i'd rather we went for a younger option on the right.

We aren't privy to the details as to why neither Jeff or Aaron would sign new deals, but they decided not to, and there's not a lot the club can do about that.

What we can do is source and recruit quality replacements, and that's the challenge for everybody at the club to solve.

Obviously I don’t know the ins and outs of what been going on inside the club, and like everyone else I only see the fall out, but hopefully our chairman will see this as a lesson and act accordingly and decisively in future. This just adds more weight to SD’s side if it was necessary and needed.

Hence why i stated we need to bring in quality this summer, now with clever scouting, and sensible targets, this doesn't necessarily mean breaking the bank.

Our wage bill needed to brought under control, it was reaching dangerously high levels, compared to our turnover, and getting Hart, Hendrick, Legzdins and Lennon off the books should hopefully free up some extra capital to ensure we strengthen the squad as a minimum this summer, our 1st XI is as good as most in this league, but when we get a spate of injuries, our lack of depth is clear to everyone.

He's played in roughly half our PL games this season, and if he'd have signed a short contract, i'm sure Sean would have played him in the run-in, but do we want to be offering a 33 year-old a longish deal, yes Bardsley resigned, but he accepted a one year deal, Would Lennon have done that, or was he looking for more security, at his age it'd be daft to offer him more than a year, and we need to recruit young blood in the wide positions.

"Hendrick perhaps"? Hendrick very much definitely.

I'm still struggling to understand how a club of our size with no major sugar daddy benefactors could let him walk away. A player at the top of his game, who we paid close on £10m for. He shouldn't have been allowed to run down his contract. Financial madness.

How can the club prevent someone from running down their contract?

I don't disagree, but once we choose not to let him go last summer, or he opted not to move, then our hands where tied, and we couldn't force him to sign a new deal, and we also couldn't offer him crazy wages, because that might have to led to unrest among the squad, it's the modern game i'm afraid, and we're not the only club it's happened too, Arsenal lost Ramsey last year for nothing, and Bournemouth face losing Ibe for nothing who they paid £15m for, all the power now is with the players like it or not.

I think this is very much the point Dyche has been making in that we should have at least secured “ end of season” services . Though not even SD could have predicted Covid allied to an almost catostrophic injury list

In terms of performance Bardsley is well worth another year. I'm struggling to think of much contribution from Lennon apart from one game which I think was at Bournemouth. Time to go.
