Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
Great article Tony. Ben Mee has been an exceptional professional for us and an ambassador for the club.
Hope he makes many more appearances in Claret & Blue.
Congratulations Ben and thank you for all you've done for Burnley FC.

It's not a big number of players given all those years and to think so many of them from one era

Good feature CT-I have been fortunate to see 9 of the list provided play.Even more commendable in the modern game that a player remains so committed to one club. Having heard him interviewed a few times this year it appears he is happy and at home at our club. It does show in people and Jay Rod is someone else who shows it

Just checked, I've seen 14 of them, the ones I didn't were obviously the five pre-war and Harold Mather.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 5:18 pmGood feature CT-I have been fortunate to see 9 of the list

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
A platry four for me. And I snook in Leighton James by witnessing two or three of his performances in the mid 80s when, by rights, he was past it but doing us a favour.
Suspect there'll be many who by virtue of their age have only seen three of that elite few.

Nice appreciation CT.
Great achievement by Ben - in this modern era especially. Hopefully he'll make it a fair few more places up that list. There's certainly no reason to feel his performance is dropping off as he enters his 30s, he seems as good as/better than ever.

Ben's good enough to see out his career in the Premier League. It would make me very happy if that happens to be with Burnley.

Well done to Ben, a model pro in every way and amazing that he completed the 300 under his recent difficult family circumstances. Hope he sees out his career with us. I have managed to see 10 of the Clarets on the list.

I scored 15 - post war. I began watching Burnley in the early 1950’s when Harold Mather was just coming to the end of his career.

Nine for me, though depending how often/which games Brian Miller played in 1967, I might possibly have seen him play and not realised/remembered?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 5:11 pmIt's not a big number of players given all those years and to think so many of them from one era
I would suspect that the number's perhaps low due in part to the number of players who we 'sold-on' relatively young, a few of whom returned later on to finish their careers.

14 but Pilky was against us not for us. So 13 in C&B.
Cheers, CT.

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
I'm another who has watched (at least) 10 of these 20.
How many games did Martin Dobson have for Everton and how many did Leighton James have for the various other clubs he played for in addition to their league appearances for Burnley? Where would they be in their respective Clarets list, if we hadn't had to sell them?
Would be great to think of Ben Mee making his 400th appearance for Burnley under manager Sean Dyche.

Good read, that.
12 on that list for me.
Though only 11 in C&B.

Perhaps Ben could invite Brian The Beast Jensen to his testimonial? It could be like a joint birthday party.

Saw Mathet play when I was a youngster, so 15 for me.

You’d hope he might go past Davis and Duff

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
Great company there. I'd expect at least another 100 games on top and he'll be remembered as one of our greats.
Suprised to see Angus and Mc on the same amount, thought Angus would have played more than Mc for us.

300 is highly commendable but he hasn't always been 'committed' to the club.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 5:18 pmEven more commendable in the modern game that a player remains so committed to one club.

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
He's one year plus a further year option left on his current contract. If he remains injury free and continues to play well in those two years he'll be very close to the top ten. Just looked at the list again and we've not had a 400 entry since Dobbo and he would have reached that total in 1984.

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
Can't you remember the time he refused to sign a new deal and was waiting for another club to sign him. Then we signed Gibson to replace him and nobody came in for Ben so he decided to sign a new deal and stay.
That is how the myth goes on here from some

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
There isn't a story, he signed a new deal which had been agreed for some time but wasn't announced until July. He said at the time that he had no intentions of leaving, it was just a matter of getting the contract over the line. With agents getting involved, usually on both sides, they can take for ever sometimes. But Ben was never intending leaving Burnley and didn't want to leave Burnley.

Well that seems, to me anyway, to have been well hidden. I'm glad to hear it.
What then was the purpose of buying Ben Gibson?

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
Hard to think that he played left back for so many seasons given how good he's been as a centre half

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
When we first signed him and he played centre half I wasn't at all impressed with him. Looking back it's no surprise, he was playing alongside David Edgar in an Eddie Howe organised defence.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 3:34 pmHard to think that he played left back for so many seasons given how good he's been as a centre half

Re: ARTICLE: The top twenty with Ben Mee
Not sure what was hidden, he wasn't out of contract and he signed a new one a year before his previous deal ran out. What was the purpose of buying Gibson? That's easy, we'd only had three central defenders for a year after Michael Keane left. We were one short.
