I will add that Albert Pierrepoint, the English Hangman, ran the only other pub of the same name in Lancashire. (Mine is in Cumberland)

AP ran a couple of pubs, I believe - Help the Poor Struggler, the one I think you're referring to, but also the Rose and Crown near Preston. As an aside "an ale house I used to frequent" was the Rose & Crown, but the "n" was blown off in a storm so it was just called the Rose & Crow.

...and Cumberland - looks like someone else has been listening to Grandad's stories.
