Bubonic Plague
Bubonic Plague
One confirmed case in Inner Mongolia and one suspected case. The confirmed one is as result of eating the raw meat of a Marmot (rodent). Is there a lack of education, is it a result of poverty or are alternative food sources needed to feed expanding populations particularly in areas like China ? It can probably be contained in Mongolia but would be deadly if spread to other countries.

Re: Bubonic Plague
Ignorance. Apparently eating raw meat is seen as a cure.
Plague outbreaks, though rare, are not unusual.
Fortunately bubonic plague is easily controlled with antibiotics. This is only making news because of the covid pandemic and the fact that it has originated in China from yet another dubious meat source.
There isn't much of a story behind the headline.

Re: Bubonic Plague
I saw part of a Gordon Ramsay programme a couple of weeks ago on somewhere out Far East. They were eating all sorts of shite and there was a mountain rat/marmot thing alive in a cage on the table in case they fancied it frying up. I turned over. Right put me off me pasta!

Re: Bubonic Plague
there were several cases there last November - it is not unusual in some parts of China - and relatively easy to treat with antibiotics if caught early enough - the new swine flu on the other hand looks pretty nasty
Re: Bubonic Plague
Let’s hope that the Austrians don’t start chomping down on the marmots, there are plenty about over there.

Re: Bubonic Plague
Doubt it is from eating raw meat as the portal of entry is the shin from infected fleas although once it gets to the lungs it can be spread by droplets of infected sputum.
"In the bubonic form of plague, the bacteria enter through the skin through a flea bite and travel via the lymphatic vessels to a lymph node, causing it to swell. Diagnosis is made by finding the bacteria in the blood, sputum, or fluid from lymph nodes".
These swollen lymph nodes are called buboes, hence then name.
Once it gets to the lungs and starts spreading that way from human to human it is then called pneumonic plague and subjects do not necessarily develop buboes.
When I was a lad the bug was called pasturella pestis but was not discovered by Louis but by Yersin a Swiss/French Physician in the 1800's who died in the 1940's. The bug was later renamed in his honour to Yersinia pestis.
Sorry for those not interested but again unlikely from what I know from the 60's to be due to eating raw meat but I may be wrong.
Spread the words not the disease

Can be cured by antibiotics nowadays if caught early enough.
