Dwight has also benefitted the academy by showing that we want to produce more than "workmen" type players - parents and kids will see him and believe that we can produce much more skilful players than is the general perception of our "Antifootball" club. I believe that in itself greatly broadens the scope of those willing to consider usClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 1:53 pmIf you sell a player who has come through your academy for £10 million say, that's £10 million against the running costs of your academy. That's easy to quantify. If you have a player come through the academy into the first team, it can't be quantified, but there is a value every single time he plays in the first team. So Dwight has now played over 50 Premier League games and he was, in effect, a free transfer signing from the academy. So, if we were to sell him now for £30 million (and I'm no valuing him here), the benefits are not just £30 million but £30 million plus the value of those 50 games.
So you have sales and appearances as, in effect, income but also the costs of bringing players in to the academy as we did back in 2015 with players like Dan Agyei, Josh Ginnelly etc.

Re: Academy Granted Category 1 ststus
I echo ClaretTony and other positive comments PLUS ..my Cat 3 to Cat 1 analogy is likened to this in business . We've gone from local then regional buyer and seller of products to multinational. We'll attract many suitors (players and businesses from all over the world) and everything must have a value on it. It must become self funding,as a bare minimum , but if ran well then it will deliver dividends to all members in some form or other. Whether we all like this future however is another matter....which Man City do the older generation prefer for instance.....Lee, Bell and Summerbee or De Bruyne and international superstars.....Maine Road or Etihad?
Will our beloved Turf Moor ground survive?????UTC.

Leeds have confirmed they've got Cat 1 status as well - so that's us, Palace and Leeds added for next season.
Re: Academy Granted Category 1 ststus
How will they sort out the league tables with three clubs joining at once?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 10:17 amLeeds have confirmed they've got Cat 1 status as well - so that's us, Palace and Leeds added for next season.

Really good news, Pepper has done a cracking job since he joined us, long may it continue.
Re: Academy Granted Category 1 ststus
Agreed all......look at some of the players coming through now from Cat 1 academies. Greenwood at Man United, Foden Man City, 2 lads for Liverpool today. Our academy should either produce good lads for us or decent lads to sell. What a result today....UTC
Re: Academy Granted Category 1 ststus
Slight downer on this. I heard today that no teams under the U’18s will be able to train or play at Barnfield when next season starts due to the current Covid regulations.

Re: Academy Granted Category 1 ststus
Callum Styles, who was inexplicably released at 16 by Jason Blake, only to join Bury and become the first player born in the 2000's to play first team professional football a matter of weeks later, has tonight scored for Barnsley in their quest to keep them up. He's been getting rave reviews for 6 weeks or so now, and I suspect the £500k that Barnsley paid (not more than 12 months after Burnley released him), will look very small in the coming months and years.

I just cannot believe Callum Styles was released by us after watching his performances for Barnsley in the last couple of games. What a young player.
Either he's suddenly developed immeasurably in the few years since his release, or we made an almighty cock up.

I can believe it and can explain it in two words - JASON BLAKEksrclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:50 pmI just cannot believe Callum Styles was released by us after watching his performances for Barnsley in the last couple of games. What a young player.

It's brilliant that the academy set up is well on the road to recovery now, but how depressing that someone like him saw fit to paralyse it in the first place. It's hard to imagine anyone in his position could have been so incompetent.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:51 pmI can believe it and can explain it in two words - JASON BLAKE

Defo the latter. Release a kid from the Under 16's - don't even offer an apprenticeship, and 7 weeks later he's starting League Football. That's an almighty cock up. There's not many 16 year olds playing professional football. He's just kept progressing. He's still only 20, and has already got over 50 appearances.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:50 pmI just cannot believe Callum Styles was released by us after watching his performances for Barnsley in the last couple of games. If you saw the amount of work that had to go in to even get him to Burnley aged 8 , convincing his dad it was the right place to develop, and keep him when big clubs (especially Everton) were after him every season, and then see that clown release him. Jesus wept.

Christ. I had no idea it was as bad as that. What a total disaster.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 10:12 pmDefo the latter. I just can't see any reason why we thought it was a good idea to release him. There is nothing about it that makes sense to me.

As bad as that? dandeclaret saw it from a different angle to me but both of us could see the damage he was doing. It took Dave Baldwin coming in as chief exec to realise just how bad how toxic our youth department was.
Good idea to release Styles? Let me say now I never saw him play for us but dandeclaret passed the news on and I spoke to several coaches in the department about it who were all absolutely stunned that we let him go.

Callum Styles
Recently came into the side at Barnsley coinciding with their dramatic relegation escape. Playing a huge part in big wins.
Under contract for another two years. But Barnsley aren’t in the best shape.
We released him (or lost him) and he went to Bury and made his debut at 16.
Has started to be a key player at Barnsley and looking like filling his early promise.
Perhaps one to look at? Will know the club and have a point to prove. Could always loan him out to Barnsley to continue his development.

Just gone 20 too
Re: Callum Styles
Why would he want to leave Barnsley to come to Barnsley ?
