Football clubs known by their nickname

Post by karatekid » Fri Jul 10, 2020 7:41 am

Wolves seem to be known exclusively by their nickname. Spurs, also known as the lily whites, to a degree but not as much.

Not their nickname but Man Utd usually called United even when they're playing another United.

Can say the same for Man City, even if they're playing another City, you know the City who is being referred too.

For nicknames, Forest, Villa, Donny

Id imagine if you lived in Newcastle you'd refer to the team almost exclusively as the Toon

Celtic were always " The Celtic Football & Athletic Co. Ltd ", and are now " Celtic PLC " .... Rangers are now " The Rangers Football Club Ltd ". I don't think either Club have ever been officially known as " Glasgow Celtic/Rangers "...... it was just an addition, made by journalists to inform people where the clubs were based .

Seems that your right, I suspected Celtic were officially Celtic, but i presumed Rangers were the new Club after Glasgow Rangers were liquidated (or whatever) in 2011 ish

Growing up, Paul Gascoigne and Ally McCoist, to me played for Glasgow Rangers. No one called them just Rangers. Odd

Villa is the name. 'The Villians' is their nickname. Ditto for Forest who are 'The Reds'.

Probably because you're English, my mother's side (Scots) would only ever call them Celtic or Rangers.

West Ham are commonly referred to as the Hammers, although their other nickname is the Irons, but I've not heard them referred to as that for many years.

I'm sure it was something to do with them wearing baggy shorts back in the day.

Bournemouth are the Cherries as the ground was built on a cherry tree orchard. Not something you see much up in Burnley. :D

I suppose outside of football the most well known nickname for a sporting team has to be the All Blacks.

They've had both for years although Throstles was the most commonly used when I was first watching football. Anywhere, here is the explanation for the West Brom nicknames.

When the club was formed in 1878 it was known the The Albion. In its first 22 years the team was based at five different grounds around West Bromwich before settling at The Hawthorns in 1900. The new ground brought with it the team nickname The Throstles, the Black Country word for Thrush, commonly seen in the hawthorn bushes from which the area took its name.

In its early days The Hawthorns had only two entrances, one behind each goal. On match days the gatekeepers would gather up the takings at each end and be escorted by policemen along the sides of the pitch to the centre line where their was a small office under the stand. The gate money, mostly in pennies, amounted to a considerable sum and was carried in large cloth bags. It wasn't long before some wag in the crowd started shouting "here come the bag men!" at their appearance in front of the main stand, and this developed into a chant of "here come the Baggies!", giving the team its unnofficial nickname.

Earlier than that. They had Alan Peacock at CF and as a youngster I thought there was a connection. No idea where it came from as they had an owl on their crest but Owls was already taken.
