Jack Charlton
Got up this morning and received a message that Jack Charlton had passed away during the night after being ill for some time.
One of the few that enjoyed his glory in 1966 and was a tough, uncompromising defender in that Leeds team.
He was a good bloke and very approachable and loved his Northumbrian heritage.
RIP Jack

Sad news. Always liked him as a player and a person. Never afraid to say what he thought and give an honest opinion. RIP Jack you'll always be remembered for 1966.

Re: Jack Charlton
Ah no. This is sad news. Always liked Charlton. As a kid Ireland became my second team with him as manager and with us not qualifying for usa94.
Just a likeable manager / person.
He was brilliant at USA 94 and that result against Italy was brilliant. Always remember watching the Holland game though at anfield. Qualifier for Euro96 a really good game and Was sad that they didn’t qualify in his last tournament.
Was always good entertainment as a pundit too.
There’s lots of great interviews with him including one at turf moor with sheff weds I think?!?
Sad news. Was hoping the thread wasn’t an RIP

Re: Jack Charlton
A no nonsense centre half as his position was called in those days and a member of our great World Cup winning team in 1966.
I saw Jack Charlton many years back at the NEC in Birmingham at a football event when he took to the stage to talk about his footballing career.
He told us that on the evening after helping England win the World Cup he got really drunk. And I kid you not the following morning he said he woke up to find himself asleep in somebody's front garden!
Can you imagine someone in that house when opening their curtains that morning saying.....Hey Mum you'll never guess who's asleep in our front garden
RIP Big Jack

I can’t find on youtube but when he was coaching the kids and one of them smashed it into his bread basket was my favourite.
When managing Boro he did a Saturday morning coaching show, on Tyne-Tees,that was quality.

I always remember an interview where he said "I couldn't play football, but I could stop others playing it and then I would give the ball to someone who could play like our kid, or Bobby(Moore)". Shier class that comment was IMO

Does anybody remember years ago a TV programme he did on a Saturday morning where he was coaching youngsters. On one episode a young lad kicked the ball and caught Charlton in his *****. Charlton then proceeded to chase the lad round the field.

Jack asked Alf Ramsey (after being first selected to play for England) 'why me?'
Ramsey replied "I don't necessarily pick the best players Jack....and because you don't trust Bobby Moore"

Be a lovely gesture if the Leeds players all wear the name “Charlton” on their shirts for the next game.

Re: Jack Charlton
There was always something likeable about Jack off the field, he came across as a loveable rogue. On the field he was an uncompromising defender and you would know you’d been in a game playing against him.
Sad news this morning.

Met him at a funeral wake in Newcastle 10 years ago, had a good chat about Jimmy Adamson, Burnley and the Brian O'Neil handball goal v Leeds. A likeable guy with no edge to him though language was colourful when out of range of his wife Pat!
RIP Big Jack.

Re: Jack Charlton
Jack Charlton once said "I have a little black book with two players in it, and if I get a chance to do them I will. I will make them suffer before I pack this game in. If I can kick them four years over the touch line, I will."
One of the player's was said to be Everton's Johnny Morrissey and not sure of the other one

Re: Jack Charlton
We had Jack booked as speaker at a fund raising dinner. We’d booked him a hotel but he hadn’t shown up. We were stood in Bank Hall Miners panicking, as we’d sold 200 tickets, when in breezed Jack. “Alright lads, anyone fancy a pint?” he said! And he went to the bar and actually bought us all one! What a great bloke and a really funny speaker. R.I.P. Jack

Sad news RIP 'big' Jack, 66 will always be his pinnacle, but he had a 2nd coming when he took the Ireland job, and he made them a formidable force in the international game.

Bobby and Jack became estranged in the latter years, I do hope they were able to reconcile, although looking at Bobby I do wonder if he too may have memory problems these days.

Met him just the once when I was selling lottery tickets in the Bob Lord stand pre-match and half time of the Shrewsbury FA Cup tie around ‘92. The large banner across the Longside game with ‘John Bond is a w*nker’ on it. He was friendly.

Staniola, above, has reminded me I used to drink at Norton WMC when he was Boro manager. He came to a fans forum, I was only there for the beer, but he bought everybody a pint that night also.

Jack used to have a home over here in County Mayo, Ireland - in close proximity to the River Moy where he was a regular fishing for salmon. Was talking to a neighbour this morning who said that he had met him out fishing a few times and he was indeed a top bloke. He also told me that Jack apparently got into the habit of paying for everything over here by cheque when he went out shopping - he realised early on that the majority of his cheques were never cashed as the shopkeepers were framing them up with a photo of him to hang on their shop walls! Canny lad!!! RIP Jack

I can't find the clip but I'm sure it's out there somewhere, it's of Jack Charlton at a Republic of Ireland press conference after rumours of a falling out with Roy Keane. He answered the question along the lines of ...
" I don't know where you've got that from, he's a lovely lad, Roy ..... we're going out dancing later ! "
Priceless ... RIP Sir !

One of the game's characters. On the surface you would never have known he and Bobby were brothers. Told it as he saw it.
One of the very few from that England team that went out to carve out a successful career as a manager.
