Re: Jack Charlton
Despite spending his whole career at Dirty Leeds, I actually really liked the guy; a no-nonsense tough guy who made a little talent go a long way. RIP big man.

Re: Jack Charlton
Very sad to hear this news. Although he was a Leeds player, I always liked him.

Re: Jack Charlton
We all knew this day was coming but it still hits you like a hammer when you hear the news .
So much has been said about Jack today, for somebody who loves football i loved Jack for what he did for Ireland , I was part of Jackie's Army but never met the man .
I have to say i think he is the best loved Englishman ever in Ireland for what he gave the country .
Still filling up thinking about the times we all had .
As my own tribute to Jack this is the first and last post i will make today .
Thanks for all you did Jack ................

Re: Jack Charlton
I remember this but apparently it's not true:mkmel wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 11:00 amJack Charlton once said "I have a little black book with two players in it, and if I get a chance to do them I will. I will make them suffer before I pack this game in. If I can kick them four years over the touch line, I will."
One of the player's was said to be Everton's Johnny Morrissey and not sure of the other one
'His outspoken views could get him in trouble, like the time he appeared on a TV chat show and revealed he kept a little black book of players he intended to hurt. He was charged by the FA of bringing the game into disrepute and successfully explained that he had been misquoted and that there was no black book'.
Whatever the truth it's another good story. At the time the Daily Telegraph published a cartoon. It showed a referee with his book out taking the name of a player with the taller Jack standing behind him with his book too, also out taking the name.

Re: Jack Charlton
I know of one ex Claret who would have gladly bought Jack a pint if he managed to get Johnny Morrissey.mkmel wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 11:00 amJack Charlton once said "I have a little black book with two players in it, and if I get a chance to do them I will. Always liked listening to him speak, told it straight and how it was. Our World Cup winners are sadly leaving us now. RIP Jack Charlton. One of the greats of English football.

Re: Jack Charlton
I think that was when their mum died and Bobby didn't go to the funeral because his wife and mum had had a disagreement.
Although brothers, although footballers, they are totally different types of people.

Absolutely. For some reason I never warmed to Bobby the same way I did Jack Charlton. Always assumed it was because he was Man Utd. But think it’s the character too. You just feel like you know Jack Charlton.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 7:36 pmI think that was when their mum died and Bobby didn't go to the funeral because his wife and mum had had a disagreement.

Re: Jack Charlton
A good turnout in Ashington to view the funeral cortege today, 7,000 people or 25% of the town turned out.
Jack a genuine, unspoilt by fame, natural guy, proud of his north east roots.
One of the country's most recognised people yet brother Bobby got the knighthood - why?

England Record Goalscorer.
Man Utd record Goalscorer.
Did a lot for the game and youth football.
All after being a munich survivor.
I prefer Jack as a character but you can see why Bobby got a knighthood.

Re: Jack Charlton
Our local MP is campaigning to get a posthumous knighthood for Jack. Personally I don't see the point, however, it would probably help raise the popularity of our long-standing MP after the last election saw his majority reduced from over 10000 down to just over 800.CleggHall wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 2:34 pmA good turnout in Ashington to view the funeral cortege today, 7,000 people or 25% of the town turned out.

Are posthumous knighthood's allowed - didn't they try to get one for the World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore?Ashingtonclaret46 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:19 pmOur local MP is campaigning to get a posthumous knighthood for Jack. Tony I am sure that they are not allowed, however, I was only reporting what our MP has said ---as an ex-Miners' leader, he knows it all!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:22 pmAre posthumous knighthood's allowed - didn't they try to get one for the World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore?

Re: Jack Charlton
As reported in The Chronicle last week:- "The Government should put right an "historic injustice" by giving Jack Charlton the knighthood he deserved, the House of Commons has been told.
Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery is campaigning for Ashington-born World Cup winner Jack Charlton to receive a posthumous knighthood, following his death on Friday.
And he's published the text of a motion put to the House of Commons, which he is inviting MPs to sign.
It reads: "This house notes with sorrow the passing of Ashington born World Cup winner Jack Charlton; further notes Jacks successful career with Leeds United for whom he played between 1950 and 1973 winning the football writers player of the year in 1967 his managerial career most notably a last 16 World Cup finish with the Republic of Ireland;
"Notes the charity, humour and character of ‘Big Jack’ who was loved in his hometown, his adopted city of Leeds and across the Irish Sea;
"Calls on the government to right a historic injustice by awarding a posthumous knighthood to a wonderful footballer and person."
MPs from any part of the country, and any party, can put their names to the motion."
There is another campaign in the town to erect a statue of Jack outside the Leisure Centre and next to one of Jackie Milburn.
