Blanket coverage of games to end

Post by dushanbe » Mon Jul 13, 2020 9:14 am

Even though grounds are expected to be at best partially occupied from next season, the current situation where every game has a UK broadcast isn't going to continue, with the normal model resuming.

Seems like a backwards step to me, given the Premier League have acknowledged that it will just lead to an increase in streaming from overseas.

Definitely. If a match takes place behind closed doors and isn't televised.. what is the point of it all? It's basically just 22 guys keeping fit.

Indeed, its the Premier League being played out for overseas TV subscribers

I think the biggest issue is the de-valuation of the 'product'. The big companies have paid a lot of money to broadcast hand picked games. Suddenyl broadcasting every game whether it be ppv or free hits their investment. If this were to happen you can certainly expect a lot more advertising to come into the game as these companies will have the expenditure of broadcasting the extra games with no other 'income stream' other than advertising...

Where've you read this? Really cannot see a situation where you can't watch a game on TV if fans are not able to attend? If they do that the PL are absolutely stupid.

Perhaps a sign of confidence that fans will be back next season?

David Ornstein has written about it in The Athletic.

As said above the product could get devalued and fans could lose interest.

I don't see why I, who pays nothing, should get free football on the TV, much as I'd like it.

They need to be doing all they can to get fans back as soon as possible. Going to a game with a 25% capacity would be a pretty miserable experience. I'd probably rather go and watch Colne FC for a season.

Absolutely obvious this was going to happen, Sky made it crystal clear when they spoke to the media just after the restart. It is also in the interests of the Premier League and the football pyramid that it does so.

If the blanket coverage was to remain the value of the product would be greatly diminished in the eyes of the rights holders, meaning less income for the league, it would also be expected to severely diminish audiences/attendances down the pyramid.

I'd agree with that. Probably wait and see what the plan is, but most likely to go and watch non-league for a season and just catch any of our televised games. Then come back for 2021-22. It'd be a shame, as we're as good as we'll ever be right now but it's not much of a day out as it stands.

I wonder how many we could safely fit into our ground-might be a good idea just to have home fans as the crowd would be easier to manage until we are over this virus
