Broad answering his critics in the best possible manner. Great start for England, the nerves will be jangling in the Windies dressing room now.

4 an over off the first 4 overs indicates they will try and win the game rather than play safe.

Re: England vs West Indies 2nd Test (Manchester)
It's not in the West Indies nature to play out for a draw, and 312 in 85 overs isn't beyond them if a couple get in, of course a wicket or two for England, and they might have to become more pragmatic. It makes sense too try and put the pressure back onto the bowlers, and if the runs start to flow, it also makes Root think about his field settings, and maybe having less men around the bat.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 12:30 pm4 an over off the first 4 overs indicates they will try and win the game rather than play safe.

Re: England vs West Indies 2nd Test (Manchester)
The West Indies are going to have to change their approach after lunch, i admire their positive batting, but as they're 23-3 it's clearly not working, they need to knuckle down and try and build a partnership, and frustrate England for an hour or so in the afternoon session.
Not easy to do when England are bowling jaffa's though, Broad & Woakes have been right on the money with the new ball.

25-3 at lunch, safe to say it's been England's morning. All set up to be 1-1 heading back to OT for the 3rd test.

Broad's on fire, he's certainly doing his talking on the pitch, and justifying his inclusion, his 3rd wicket of the innings, and 6th of the match, and he'll fancy a few more before the day's out. England heavy favourites to wrap this up now.

Big wicket that, the Brooks/Blackwood partnership was guiding the West Indies towards safety, no surprise it's that man Stokes again, everytime England need something to happen, he's the talisman and he rarely disappoints.

I'm only going off the Beeb text commentary, and they stated the light wasn't great, but you'd think with the floodlights they should be able to stay on, especially if there's the chance of a result, which there most certainly is.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 4:42 pmIt’s almost cloudless skies here now although I’m in Burnley, not at OT.

Into the tail now, surely only a matter of time. 28 overs remaining, although they may not get them all in, or England may not need them all.
A penny for Jason Holder's thoughts, he decided to put England in on that 1st morning, and you'd have to say it's proven to be the wrong call.
Indeed both captain's that have won the toss, have gone on to lose the test match, might not be a bad thing in losing the toss next week, it seems to be a blessing in disguise winning the toss.

Joseph been given not our three times in two deliveries.
First ball: England review an lbw but decision upheld
Second ball: given out caught, review showed no touch so not out but then they looked at lbw, not out again

That catch by Pope has to be the best catch I've seen at short leg.
It's one thing training your reactions to have a 2nd go at a catch, but to set off on a dive is outstanding.

Great win for England, just hope that injury to Stokes isn't too severe.
Tough calls for both sets of selectors, with the 3rd test following almost immediately, you imagine the bowlers would be changed anyway for both sides.

Re: England vs West Indies 2nd Test (Manchester)
Stokes said he's be ok, but even if he isn't he'll play as a specialist batsman - we've plenty of bowling in reserve.
I'm not sure that with a small squad the WI will be able to make any changes to their fast bowling attack. They've 2 more spin bowlers in the squad, but their spinner (Chase) has done well anyway, and the only fast bowling back up they have is very young and inexperienced. (Chemar Holder)
Doubt we'll see any changes to the WI bowling line-up since they won't dare play an extra spinner due to the fragility of their batting.

I would expect Jimmy to come in for Sam Curran, then the question is: do we make room for Archer? I think the batting line up will be the same.

Re: England vs West Indies 2nd Test (Manchester)
The seamers didn't get through a huge amount of work, so they should all be fit to play, Jimmy will surely return and possibly Jofra, depending on the pitch they might omit Bess and S Curran, even though neither did a lot wrong, but there's still lots of test cricket left this summer, and i'm sure both will get their chance again. Tough to leave Broad and Woakes out after their showing 6 for Broad, 5 for Woakes. The only question mark in the batting would be young pope, but dropping him would be harsh. England definitely have the wind in their sails ahead of Friday, but there's not a huge difference between these sides, so i certainly wouldn't be writing the WI off just yet.

100 Test wickets for Chris Woakes ... and in his 34th Test.
Now has 100 wickets and 1,000-plus runs. By way of comparison, it took Jason Holder 39 Tests to reach this mark, Andrew Flintoff 43, Ben Stokes 43, Garry Sobers 48...
Can't leave Woakes out. What a player.

Wow! that's some company he's in, those numbers show his value to this England side, and it's not just the wickets it's the calibre of players he's dismissing, even in this match he claimed the wickets of Chase & Holder in the 1st innings, and the crucial scalp of Brathwaite 2nd innings, it's not rabbits he getting out it's top players.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 8:54 pm100 Test wickets for Chris Woakes ... and in his 34th Test.

Re: England vs West Indies 2nd Test (Manchester)
Just looking at the scorecard to try and guess the team for the next test.
Broad and Woakes have to stay in, especially Woakes as he bowls with such control. Going at 2 and 2.12 an over as well as picking up wickets.
Jimmy is a cert to come back for Curran then it's a case of Wood or Archer for Bess? Bess has done alright but never really had the control you would want from one end. He hasn't been the go to bowler on the last day either.
There should be more pace and bounce in the wicket in the next test too.
The batting will stay the same after a decent effort.

Can you go into a 2nd game at Old Trafford, I believe in exactly the same pitch, without a spinner? I can’t see that happening myself. I suspect the players know the rotation plans, and would guess at Archer and Jimmy for Woakes and Curran, unless Stokes is injured in which case Root might have to be the all rounder spinner and Woakes keeps his place as the 4th seamer.

Re: England vs West Indies 2nd Test (Manchester)
It's a tough question and normally you would always want a spinner with you.
England aren't blessed with spinners at the minute and Bess has only done alright. He doesn't tie ends down and won't rip through sides.
His main dilemma though is he his keeping pace bowlers out of the side that would walk into any side in world cricket.
We are well and truly blessed in that department.
Nice to have selection problems of this kind though.

They certainly won't be playing on the same pitch, Bess was outbowled in this match by Chase, so his place has to be in doubt for the 3rd test, Jimmy will come back, Jofra i'm not so sure, but he is available if required.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 8:31 amCan you go into a 2nd game at Old Trafford, I believe in exactly the same pitch, without a spinner? My biggest criticism of Bess is that he hasn't impacted on day 5 when you'd most expect him to come into the game in a worthwhile manner.
I'd be loathe to drop Woakes after his performance, Curran will probably miss out, but as others have stated it's a nice problem to have.

In the defence of Bess you could argue the pitch was only 4 days old with losing a full days play.

That's true, but any half decent spinner should be able to get something out of a 4th day pitch, and he was going at 3/4 runs an over in both innings.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 11:18 amIn the defence of Bess you could argue the pitch was only 4 days old with losing a full days play.
His selection may well depend on how the pitch looks, if it's a seamer's paradise he'll likely miss out, if it's dry and there's signs of cracks or footmarks as the game progresses he'll likely retain his place.

Something amazing that caught my eye today. Since Jan 2019 in home tests,
Stuart Broad averages 5.35 against LHB with 20 dismissals.
YOU CANNOT DO THAT BROADY !
https://t.co/JnDHaXKuLA
Not bad stats to have. Shame the W Indies only have one left hander.
