At least the BBC has got shut of the Andrew Neill Show. Can't stand that guy as he continually interupts people when they are trying to answer his questions.
Talk about 'All about me'. He's an interviewer / political commentator, not a film star for pity's sake.

My vote goes for ridding things such as Cash in the attic, bargain hunt, homes under the hammer, masterchef. Can all go, for me.

The BBC is the best value for money organisation in the entertainments and streaming services by far.
Radio, podcasts, streams, catch up, world service, world class documentaries, not to mention the TV programmes and the news. I don't begrudge paying the licence fee at all.

Fortunately i don't have the pleasure of watching them, but looking at both the BBC/ITV schedules there does appear to be a lot of similar types of daytime shows airing.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 3:38 pmMy vote goes for ridding things such as Cash in the attic, bargain hunt, homes under the hammer, masterchef. I don't often have the TV on during the day, i prefer the radio, there's plenty of great comedies and dramas on R4 Extra which provide far better entertainment than the box can.

Re: BBC/Guardian announce job cuts
For some it represents excellent value, for some it doesn't. Surely they should have confidence in their own product and make it optional. Block the signal for those who don't want it. I haven't paid the TV licence for about 15 year now and don't see why it shouldn't be optional for everyone.Turfy Topper wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 3:47 pmThe BBC is the best value for money organisation in the entertainments and streaming services by far.

The radio is something I hardly ever listen to, but while working from home, I'd probably quite enjoy interesting educational programmes. Something you can learn even though it's on in the background.tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 3:52 pmFortunately i don't have the pleasure of watching them, but looking at both the BBC/ITV schedules there does appear to be a lot of similar types of daytime shows airing.

Can the likes of Owen Jones, Ash Sarker at the Guardian not take large pay cuts or perhaps volunteer be paid the same as the cleaners or canteen staff to protect other jobs.

Just be honest and admit you dont like the way he treats his interviewees with equal scrutiny. No "get out of jail free cards" for the Left from Andrew Neill. That's why the increasingly Left, and out of touch with its dwindling audience, BBC, is dropping him.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 3:33 pmAt least the BBC has got shut of the Andrew Neill Show. This would cause a shortfall in funding, so people who like the service should cough up the difference?

Re: BBC/Guardian announce job cuts
Incredible levels of victimhood from the right wingers on here, but don't worry the BBC is still run by a literal Tory candidate and the little watched 11:30pm political show is being axed to be replaced by something in a more prominent time slot still hosted by the same man best known for editing a host of right wing newspapers and magazines.

Still if it gives your existence some meaning now Brexit is a sh*t show and the Govt are looking a complete shambles then fair play.

If you can't get 43p a day of value out of BBC Radio, TV and online content you really aren't trying very hard. Commercial radio is pretty much universally terrible.

Re: BBC/Guardian announce job cuts
I used to interview people about the BBC.
Very mixed answers when asked if the license fee is value for money.
Of course here in Wales S4C is a beneficiary of the license fee, and here where 80% of the population is first language Welsh - a Welsh language service, whether it's S4C, Radio Cymru or whatever is a massive part of the culture.
Still you get a lot of people who have far greater affinity with ITV and some prefer BBC.
In terms of whether people think the BBC is impartial - again it's a mixed bag.
Some think it's right leaning some left leaning and some bang in the middle.

I find a lot of people dislike the BBC because it doesn’t pander to every single one of their personal prejudices, defunding it won’t make you happy.

Advertising revenue not robust enough to support a BBC showing adverts as well as the existing Commercial broadcasters.

Well they are doing this with the Brit Box and BBC Studios making £243m in profit which is a separate entity to the BBC so is commercially active. They are buying stakes in independent media companies and other commercial entities.
They produce £1.2bn from commercial and non-licence fee income. If they can't provide a subscription model or a commercial free to air model with advertising, I would be very surprised.

By the time the next general election comes around it'll be nearly 20 years since "us Lefties" won a general election.
Think about this.
The last time "us lefties" were "winners", Dwight McNeill was 5 years old!!
Now that's what you call "amusement!"

The Guardian is the mouthpiece of the noisy minority.
If you look on places like twitter or this message board you would assume its the bible for the average person, but in reality its read online for free by state dependent people with lots of free time on their hands that they spend on the Internet, arguing about things like men being allowed into womens toilets.
Thats why its on its @rse and always begging for donations.
Most of its customers actually spend their money on rags like the sun or daily mail, hoping they find something that offends them.
Unreal how many of the bedwetters know word for word what those comics print

Yes, 'The Guardian' is the paper for people who aren't influenced by opinions but rather, form their own opinions based on fact.
That they are superior is proven -beyond all reasonable doubt- when 'The Guardian' affirms what they had already knew.

Re: BBC/Guardian announce job cuts
The Guardian is far less likely to contain false, misleading, or biased news reporting than the Telegraph or other rightwing papers. If the telegraph were a restaurant, it would have been shut down by now over poor hygiene standards. There are plenty of other honest and decent news sources, so if the Guardian turns shoddy I’ll go elsewhere. Their high standards are why they get a lot of online readers, and there’s no extremely rich owner pulling the editorial strings.

You couldn't get a much more left wing lot.

Re: BBC/Guardian announce job cuts
The opinion pieces are left wing, but the reporting itself isn’t. This is in contrast with a lot of the right wing press which reports news itself through the prism of right wing bias. Hence the Telegraph was responsible for ten times the number of untruths printed about the EU than the Guardian.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:47 amLess likely to contain biased, misleading etc reporting..
