If he hadn’t have given that or if he had given a wolves free kick there is noway on earth VAR would have overturned it. 9/10 that is either nothing and play on, or it is a wolves free kick. Yes it should be a penalty 10/10 times, but that is not how the rules are applied these days. Thank you Dean! Got us out of jail.

Who cares if we were lucky, another point, another game unbeaten only lost to Citeh in the last 14 games.

The few fit players we have are running on empty but still dragging results out. Says loads about our character.

2 to go and they can enjoy a well earned rest.

I’d have been gutted to concede a late penalty like that. But we did at their place so I’ve no sympathy. It was a bit dodgy though although Wood’s foot was nowhere near Doherty’s head, and Bardsley was taken out by a poor challenge on the original header.

I've said it for years over various messege boards Dean is and has been for some time, the best ref around.

OK he seems to be our lucky charm, but I like the fellas style of reffing

Oh and our not losing ratio when he offiates us is superb to (not that that sways my judgement :D )

Definitely been my favourite ref since the 80th minute of the play off final v Sheff U.

Copybook only blotted by that pen he gave to the b'stard Olsen.

Mike had checked the result from 25 August 2019 and thought the late Wolves penalty should not have been awarded. He knows his football!!

Well, dp, you were correct and with City conceding as well it is good news for Nick! It is obvious that we softened the Pool up on Saturday and their uncharacteristic mistakes gifted the game to the Gunners in spite of Liverpool having 28 shots at goal which is 5 more than they had against us!
It's a strange game!

Some very, very soft decisions particularly against Wood tonight. There is far too much protection in th current game

Excellent performance by Mike Dean who did really well to spot the handball at the end. He refereed in the way that the officials are instructed to do their job these days. Free kicks for the Wolves defender in the first half, when there was the slightest contact, and the laughable free kick which Tarkowski got in the second half for exactly the same thing just highlight the way that the game is going and how officials are being told to penalise any contact.
It will get worse!

Why? The ball clearly hits his elbow without any contact with Wood. He is 3 feet away from Wood's foot and his arm is in an unnatural position (defined as not being his normal body profile) .
Or have they secretly brought in a rule to ban overhead kicks in the penalty area. There were several overhead kicks outside the area during the game. And Barnes scored that cracking overhead at West Brom last time we played there without anyone claining it was dangerous play.

Hmmm... 3 ft? I’ll have to watch the replay again and get my measuring tape out.
Anyway I’m very happy we got out of gaol.

I’ve just watched the replay again. If there was 3ft between Doherty’s head and Chris Wood’s boot then my c***’s a kipper. But maybe you’ve seen a different angle that wasn’t available on the Sky highlights?

In fairness it's been around a fair few years. Saw a Watford player score a belter of an overhead kick a number of years back. Was disallowed. Dangerous play. Ridiculous decision at the time and now. It was a thing of beauty.

Just how far away from another player does a man have to be, before he can go for an overhead kick.
When Wood started his Doherty was 6 feet away. I saw nothing dangerous about the action of Wood, and the ball clearly hits his arm, it was a penalty all day long. Mike Deam and Friend clearly thought the same.
No doubt we'd have been making the same whinges if it had been given against us, thats fans the world over, but we'd be wrong just like Wolves are.

First point, I think Doherty’s head was less than 3 ft. away from Wood’s boot, and that is the point I was answering.

Second, you’re right saying we’d whinge if it was the other way round. However as a Burnley fan you’d still think you were right. In fact you’d be outraged that we didn’t get a free kick for dangerous play!

I’ve got to say I couldn’t believe we got that penalty. Very happy though that our amazing run continues.

You're looking at it the wrong way.
If Doherty goes to head it, and Wood then tries to kick it off his head it's dangerous play.
If Wood goes for an overhead kick, and Doherty tries to head it off his toe, it isn't.
Wood clearly attempted the bicycle kick when Doherty was 6 foot away, the fact they ended up closer was no fault of Wood's.

Docherty was actually moving into a position to block the ball after Wood had kicked it, however, Wood missed it and it hit Doherty on his elbow. It was similar to the penalty awarded in the WC Cup Final when the French player missed the header and it hit the defender on the arm.
The referee awarded a corner, however, VAR intervened and I still think that the referee was 'persuaded' to change his mind and award a penalty. In days gone by, that would not have been a penalty and neither would last night, however, the game has, and is, changing ------heaven knows where it goes next.

So Doherty badly misjudged it then. If he’d been moving into a position to block he should have been in front of where the ball was dropping. As such it’s his own fault.

As already stated by several people there was no danger to any Wolves player when Wood started his overhead kick. Doherty then has a choice, stand back and let Wood take the shot or try and put him off. But if he takes the second option he needs to understand he’s putting himself in danger and accept he might get kicked. You can’t then lead with your arm and claim you were trying to protect yourself when the ball hits your arm. If you’re going to try and block you need to be brave enough to lead with your head (see Ben Mee and James Tarkowski).

Ironic if they hadn't been awarded that pen and we hadn't got ours last night....both Wolves and Burnley would have one extra valuable point.

Think they should ave had a gentleman's agreement lol.
