Hendrick set to leave

Post by agreenwood » Tue Jun 23, 2020 8:09 am

So says Andy Jones at The Athletic. No extension - short or long.

Talks with Bardsley continuing.

They'll be plenty of stories released after Mr Dyche pre and post match interviews.
Hendrick has been offered a deal, whether he signs it or not us another matter, however if he hasnt done so in the last 12-18 months, I doubt he will suddenly change his mind kn the last week.

Will take quite a few more pounds to change his mind one thinks.

Presumably. The article says we’ve been discussing a contract with him for a long time, which is common knowledge. Apparently talks took place again on Sunday, but no agreement was reached, so the club are now expecting him to follow Lennon & Hart out the door.

Yeah, suppose we shouldn’t be surprised. It’s clear he’s had an offer on the table for a while, so clearly not going to sign it now if he hasn’t all this while.

Shame, I’d have liked him to re-sign, particularly for the run-in. Sour ending to a good spell.

There is certainly going to be less money in football in the next few years at least due to the virus, and they way football is watched.

As a result, players won't be able to get bigger and better contracts.

Good players will still get better contracts than Burnley can offer. I’m sure Hendrick will earn more at his next club than he was earning here.

Not really bothered. Decent player the right, no more than that. He's certainly no Messi as some on here thought he was.

It’s about more than that though. He cost us £10.5m - a like for like replacement, merely to get us back to where we were, is going to cost at least that and probably a chunk more. Can you see us spending that to achieve parity? I can’t.

Not impossible if he goes abroad as some suggest he might. Would be shocked if he earns higher wages elsewhere in the Prem, because I can’t see him at a bigger club that Burnley here, but may get a chunky signing on fee, wherever he goes.

Must have somewhere lined up.

I have sympathy with Sean Dyche if the club had not offered contracts (which is what he had previously intimated?), but if we have done everything we reasonably can to retain Hendrick (a slight uplift on current terms, or current terms with bonuses attached seems fair to me?) then I am unsure what else the club could have done with his case.

Hendrick has been decent for 18 months, solid and consistent and would be in my first 11 more often than not as he is reliable. However, he is not a world beater and if he was asking for a gigantic pay hike that would put him towards the top end of the wagebill you can understand a bit of reticence towards agreeing to that in the current climate.

If he is gone though I wish him well, he had a pretty average (at best) first season with us but, especially since his shift to the right hand side, he has more than proven his worth and on the whole was a good signing for us.

For 10-15 million there's plenty of better players available.
Problem for our club is though they have no reliable contacts or network in Europe, save for our European scout who has ensured the following signings...(?)
Not helped by the fact that SD himself has made it quite clear that he favors British players, who cost more.

A player like Hendrick would never have come at a price of 10M in the top competitions of Europe, in fact he would never make the grade in a top European team. In England however it is the going price of a decent squad player.

Bad news for an already threadbare squad.
The Board perhaps think they already have his replacement in Brownhill but given the obvious total communication breakdown between manager and Board, it looks clear that any recruitment drive has even been discussed.

Not sure about that. The likes of Burnley won't be able to offer them, but I'd still guess the majority of the Premier League and half of the Championship would be able to soak it up and still offer top dollar with the bankroll of most of their owners

He’ll be missed but I can understand him wanting out. Not guaranteed a start when everyone is fit, the kicking boy for every defeat. Too many have just never taken to him.
It does appear he has an agreement in place elsewhere.

It's not just wages, no doubt they'll be a hefty signing on fee too.

With 100+ premier league appearances and a wealth of international experience, youd struggle to get a similar player for 10-15m

So even if he gets a 3-4m signing on fee his new club will have got a bargain, whilst Jeff gets the equivalent of 20k extra a week over a 3-4 year contract on top of his newly negotiated contract.

He's in a very strong position.

We don’t have a European scout as such and I’m not sure where you get the notion that we have neither contacts nor network in Europe. And has Dyche said he favours British players?

That's true for us as well. I've never been his biggest fan, but it'll cost us a damn site more than a £3-4m signing-on fee to replace him.

Truth is, we don't know what he's asking for and never will. Even if we did, we'd all disagree whether it was reasonable or not, but one thing's for sure - this isn't good news in the short-term.

But we cant or wont break the wage structure as every player will want to be top earner on 60-70k a week.

Our wages are already becoming unsustainable.

What ever way you dress it up, Jeff Hendrick is not worth 70k a week plus bonuses a week.

Without sounding flippant, you wouldn't know personal details of what players want, and dont want in terms of wages and bonuses

Also like I said, with the signing on fee, that's what he could get elsewhere in wages, Burnley cannot offer that and nor should they.

It's quite clearly a dispute over pay, although i hope he would stay, I'm glad the club eont buckle to player financial demands, as where does that then stop?

Clubs with benefactors will be able to offer high wages. There will be less clubs overall offering them. It will be a narrower market for better players. Lesser players will be offered far less and by the majority of clubs imo. Without fans it is not the same product and some clubs will struggle now. Long overdue reality check for many.

There's nothing to stop us negotiating with Jeff after today's deadline passes. It'll just mean that he can't play in any of the remaining matches.

If we aren't too far apart surely it would make sense to carry on negotiations.

I really don’t get comments like “he’s not the Messi some on here make him out to be”.
Firstly literally nobody has ever said that and secondly and more importantly losing Jeff will make our team weaker.
Hendrick has been key for SD in the last couple of seasons especially - I can’t think of another player who has been as injury free and versatile for the team. At a time when our wingers were either out of form or injured he stepped into the right side and our fortunes / form changed when we were in real trouble. He’s played centre mid and also in the number 10 role he dislikes himself. And as said of all the midfielders and strikers he has kept himself fitter than any of them.

But the real problem with losing Jeff is the cost of replacing him for someone as good as him. Keeping him could have cost us say £2m / £2.5m a year - probably affordable given some of the other squad we are losing in terms of wages and of course we were already paying Jeff so likely an additional cost of only £1m to £1.5m a year.
Replacing him is a £10m to £15m transfer fee and then wages on top and whether that is affordable is very much in question at the moment.
This is the same reason why we decided to resign a much less reliable player in Brady - it’s to avoid the cost of replacing.

But if he got a significant wage increase, the next ooc year will want even more. We don't have any idea of our budgets for the future.

This is what it boils down to for me. Give Hendrick an increase (who I wouldn't put in our bracket of top players) and everyone will follow suit.

Also interesting what sort of club would sign him. Surely if it was to a club away from England, he would have been in talks since Jan and likely have signed a Pre-Contract ?

He has wanted to leave for a while, Sane leaving City is an example of players just wanting to try somewhere else. Nice fee for Geoffs agent as well remember.

If Hendrick or Bardsley were staying they would've signed yesterday to be included in last night's squad.
The fact they let SD put out a threadbare squad and being well aware that's what would happen says it all to me.
Personally, I don't want either of them anywhere near my club.

Maybe Bards has played a blinder here. I think he would sign a 2 year deal today on quite a bit less than he is on now. If so its a win win, as the club had made a point that wages are not just going up and up anymore for most players.

Dyche should of sold him and got his transfer fee back when under contract.

Our club can't be so wasteful with money.
When should he have sold him? After we had finished 7th and needed a bigger squad? End of last season when he had helped drag us out of the mire and we had great form? You can’t just sell players when you need bodies

Spotted - claims to know things until challenged and then backs down
There's a difference between an opinion and implying things as fact.

Plus I've never claimed to know anything, I dont want banning for proving certain people wrong.

Theres only you truly ever in the know regards Burnley, all on the board know that, I wouldn't claim anything different.

I like yours and cotc support for each other though, it's cute. Always good to have a lap dog to defend you when needed, and support you regardless, I want one.
To coin your phrase. - spotted ( months ago )

Edit - just to add, its "back down" or get banned, no point banging your head against the wall with some posters. There's a few out there who highlight the same point regards this particular poster.
( acknowledges there's the same could be said for him, which is why he refuses to take them on, and engage in slanting tit for tat remember the #be kind? )

I agree that a player intending to sign, would have done it yesterday.

Great shame.

If either do sign today, then they are already discredited.

Damn.

Whenever the best opportunity for us was, the club will know.

Rumours were Leicester bid 15m at one point, but I really think they were just that.

If someone lost a 10m asset for free in any other job than premier league football, you would be out of the door.

Probably why the chairman doesn't trust him anymore with these things.

Truth is the asset value to the club for Hendrick is £0 - to the team very significantly more - he will never have been a top earner at the club and the rumoured wages he is looking for in Italy are attractive to them (when no fee is involved) similar to what he is on here but will give him significantly more net income as a result of the new tax system over there.

- It is a real shame I like him, I like his nous and graft and he has been a core player for the majority of his time here (even if he has been consistently been played out of his favoured position - which may be a key element of the problem re a new contract). We saw last night that his experience and shape understanding were missed,

What utter rubbish.
There is nothing in that post that is anything other than conjecture (I'm trying to be polite with my description there)

Even if you could replace that asset with someone from elsewhere that had done exactly the same. Do you think nobody has ever moved on out of contract before ? Costing a lot more than Hendrick did ?

Weird thought process
