Burnley Penalties
Burnley Penalties
Hi Guys,
Im sure we must have a statistician amongst us who can verify this for me. There is a stat doing the rounds in my office that United have had more penalties in the Premier Lge era than Burnley have since they were formed in 1882. True or not? and do we know how many penalties we have had since forming?

Re: Burnley Penalties
All I know is 1) penalties seem commoner than when I was watching in the 50's and early 60's
2) Yellow and red cards far more common than for yellow, ref taking player's name and for red as now player leaving the field in that era.
In fact was a bit of a talking point when a player had his name taken by the ref in a game and as for a sending off-well. For me the game slowly changed once the maximum wage disappeared, much more dissent to the officials from players, more cheating and then more crowd disruptions which I will always contend followed on from the problems arising on the pitch.

Re: Burnley Penalties
I agree with mdd2’s post re the changes in cards and penalty awards. However, the crowd disturbances of the late 60’s/early 70’s were due to the violent youth culture of the time and tribalism, more than player behaviour.
A view of penalty awards over our PL seasons would be interesting, if not a little depressing. We probably already have a good idea how it would look.

Re: Burnley Penalties
Thanks chaps
Re: Burnley Penalties
I think I've said this before but the whole concept of penalties should be looked at.
Originally it was used as punishment for deliberately handling the ball to prevent a goal. Now the penalty is used as another tool in obtaining a goal, not so much a punishment for a misdemeanour but something to be 'won'. In many if not most cases the punishment does not fit the crime.

Penalties could be Americanised to make soccer ball more interesting, back healer gets you three goals, in of the post or bar gets you two goals clean shot one ,keeper touches it you take it again, keeper saves it you give the opposition a corner. Then have a water break sponsored by Evian.
