Re: How the mighty fall
Not sure why we are hating on Welbeck. Not his fault he was hyped above his Station just cos he came through Unkted youth and hasn't quite made it. Not sure he has ever been outspoken on anything or said anything to offend anyone, so no reason to be glad if he fails or is relegated.
Part of me always thought it would be good to have him here although not seen much since he left Arsenal and with what we show I don't think he would trouble any of our first 4 strikers

Everyone who gets one game for ManU is over-hyped.
Sam Johnstone, in the nets for WBA, has been awful recently but I can remember him being bulled up like Henderson is now.
There’s a reason they sell them.

Weird to have a go at him. Always seemed a level headed sort. Hype is just that - he strikes me as somebody who just wants to play football. It perhaps doesn’t help that he’s playing in a poor team.

Re: How the mighty fall
it's what happens when you spend the majority of your career injured - how do you get good at something or retain a high level when you can't practice ? We are seeing the same with Brady and JBG

I think he’s a good player, he certainly was anyway and has had rotten look with injuries.
Seems a really nice lad as well

Always thought he’d be a good signing for us. Injury prone though.

I looked at the Watford team last night and thought how easy they would romp the championship if they were relegated
A squad full of decent players with bags of pace that won't get ransacked.
Doucorre and Sarr might get bought but a lot on big wages.
Welbeck, Deeney and Delafou up front would terrify championship defenders.

Precisely, and didn't we get conned with Chris Eagles? Hyped up during Utd's pre season tour of South Africa that we ended up paying for by buying him.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 11:05 pmEveryone who gets one game for ManU is over-hyped.

One good game in ten and that was when his FB was crap.
Re: How the mighty fall
He certainly did - and he was a magician at getting good money from them. Even then it was amazing to see how poor most of them were at their new clubs. Here’s a few from memoryClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 11:22 pmAlex Ferguson developed a habit of selling poor players for big money because of the United hype
Curtis (Preston ?)
O Kane - Everton - nearly a million and then us on loan where he looked like he’d never kicked a ball before.
Eckersley -
Thornley
Wood
Roche
A winger whose name escapes me who we took on loan and few other north west clubs had him
And many more !

It wouldn't be that team in the Championship though, the Pozzos would move so many of them on very quickly I would imagine.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:37 amI looked at the Watford team last night and thought how easy they would romp the championship if they were relegated

Chris Eagles was a great signing and a level above anything we had at the time. I remember a conversation with one of the lads before the Bristol City game to get in the play offs. I had just walked out of the bookies having put us on for a 4-0 win and told him the last person a side with nothing to play for would want to face on the last day of the season would be Chris Eagles.
I was right and 300 quid richer.

Possibly, but they're not good enough for top teams in the premier league and their wages would rule out the bottom halfClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:50 amIt wouldn't be that team in the Championship though, the Pozzos would move so many of them on very quickly I would imagine.
They could get shifted to Italy I suppose?
Re: How the mighty fall
Would a lot of the foreign lads be up for the battle in the Chsmpionship though? They don't look arsed this season whenever I've watched them.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:37 amI looked at the Watford team last night and thought how easy they would romp the championship if they were relegated

There was a phone in for MOM during the time he was here and he'd win it frequently, even when he was awful. That was because all the girlies used to vote for his hairstyle. We all used to just look at each other astonished that when it was announced. I think he was the reason Burnley did away with the phone in.

The best one with the mom on the Turf is when the sponsors chose it. They chose Frank Sinclair and he'd been sent off.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 12:08 pmGood for you, I'm happy for you but what's he done since he left us? That shows how good he was.

Plus there's only Tripps and Ings who have gone on to better themselves after leaving Burnley in the last 30 years.

Then let's agree to disagree. I've been watching Burnley for 68 years now and I think Eagles was a waste of money.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 12:23 pmI only judge players on how good they were for us as I see them regular.

Look at his record since he left us. He didn't last long anywhere, except Bolton, even in the lower leagues.
He was sold on to Bolton Wanderers in July 2011, where he stayed for another three seasons. He went on to have brief spells with Blackpool, Charlton Athletic, Bury, Accrington Stanley, Port Vale and Ross County. He joined Oldham Athletic in July 2019 after spending more than a year away from the game, before leaving his contract early in January 2020.

Re: How the mighty fall
Nice cutting and pasting from Wikipedia on Eagles career.
I thought he was a good signing and he had plenty of good games for Burnley. When we went up to the Premier League I also thought that Eagles and Fletcher were 2 of our better performers in the first part of the season.
Eagles also had some excellent loan spells at other clubs before Burnley and he had a handful of decent games for United to.
Didn’t he also have a debilitating illness which impacted on his later career ?
I also thought we made money on him too when we sold him to Bolton - so not sure where the “waste of money “ comes from.
Oh and how long somebody has been watching Burnley play is not criteria for being correct - it’s not Top Trumps !!

I don't think we would of got promoted without him so he's well worth the money.
Do you think Liverpool fans judge Torres on being one of the best players in the league for them or the flop that went to Chelsea?

Not that interested in other club's players unless they are somehow connected to us, but Torres was a brilliant player. Maybe he liked one manager more than the other? Who knows?Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 12:55 pmOf course, football is about opinions. I have no problem with that.

Liverpool identified a problem with Torres post injury before going to Chelsea I think and had little to lose selling him and a massive amount of money to gain.
