Today’s tactics

Post by Danieljwaterhouse » Sat Jul 18, 2020 7:41 pm

I love Dyche, I love his management, his media work, the culture he’s created, and so on...

But he’s lacking either the nuts or doesn’t have the ideas to really make decisive changes to affect the game.

Vydra should’ve been on at half time, McNeil and Brady should’ve been TOLD to stay as wide as possible, and he should have pulled one of the full backs and out on a wide player.

He reminds me of the special one

Do you think we'd have got more than three points if he'd done all that?

Can sort of understand your frustration but Dyche's number one objective is understandably getting three points. Hard to complain after another incredible season.

It’s difficult when a team just gets behind the ball, but I was wondering when the lad scored the own goal, why didn’t we have anyone in the box playing against 9 men???

If the kids arent getting on at 2-0, v the bottom of the league , and against 9 men, then they never will.

Keep the back 5 and give the young lads ago, I'm sure Benson can pass sideways 10 yards and the young forwards could have done just as much up top.

Got it wrong too IMO, and I love the guy

Norwich defended really well, it was defence v attack for 45 mins. They basically Burnley‘ed us, they got men behind the ball, closed us down and cleared they’re lines.

The job was done just before half time though

I agree to a point. But 3 points will always be 3 points overall and the difference between 9th and 10th will matter little to the fans, but it could be significant to the club. And like I say, SD is often pretty clueless once the first whistle blows, so it wasn't such a shock.

Do you think bringing 3 on at 85 mins would have changed the outcome?

The back 5 were set, it was just a case of passing sideways before a poor ball and I tired run.

All about opinions, but fair enough.

We could then of watched Vydra not scoring for a full 45mins.

Only Burnley fans could get upset that the manager wasn't changing enough in a comfortable 2-0 away win.

It's professional sport, not FIFA.

I think (hope) you've quoted the wrong person. As you've just argued against yourself.

I agreed with what you said, on making changes much earlier, but at the same time saw it from the club's POV, in that 3 points still only means 3 points.

He’s dragging the young lads around to get them into the first team set up and see how seasoned professionals work on match day(travel, preparation, match, de-brief).
Who would you have subbed off for MattyV? JRod, who was playing well, or Wood, who’d just scored?

Would have been good for morale that wouldn't it. Well done Woody on the goal (against 9 men) but you're no good against 9 men, so you're coming off.

Norwich defended well but we made it easier for them with McNeil’s free role tempting him inside and taking up the same space as Westwood and Brownhill.

I’m not upset, I’m worried that he needs to begin to come out of his comfort zone and be progressive with his use of shapes, tempo, and personnel to advertise his wares to a bigger audience.

We won and got three points but with the situation as it was I agree we could/should have done better. On 75 minutes if we had been 3 up he could have put a couple of the youngsters on.
Didn't happen for us but hey 15 wins, and 7 away from home with 5 draws and only 7 defeats. 2009-10 W1 D1 L17, brilliant season for us. Pity if it all ends with a parting of the waves.

Dyche did the right thing. He let McNeil roam freely against the deep block - he didn’t have the 1v1 player off the bench that would’ve been useful in this situation.

Don't be worried, be grateful, that in the billions of years that this planet has been around, you're here in the same narrow window as one of the top 3 managers this club has ever had.

We over complicated it and in particular the stage was set for Vydra and Brady to make a major contribution. Wasn't to be but hey, 3 points, clean sheet and hopefully no injuries picked up. It also guarantees us a top half finish which is unbelievable. A weeks beak also for this team that must be shattered

I don't get the obsession with throwing young players on when the season's winding down with us safe. McNeil played 1 minute of football in that situation and was then only used when he was the best available option. Worked out just fine without jogging around in dead rubbers.

Progress to where? Where do you see Burnley progressing to from constant years in the Premier League? Like, Preston, Bolton, Blackburn, Millwall, Stoke, Huddersfield, Birmingham City are all similar sized clubs to Burnley. Honestly, this is as good as it gets. This is the best of it. Appreciate it whilst it's here, cos when it's gone...... well look at that list of clubs.

What a depressing point of view you have. Of course I see us progressing.

Whatever level you play at you want to progress, even acknowledging there’s a glass ceiling is crazy.

Yes the current squad are limited, the manager is not, the infrastructure is not.

Can you not see the pieces being moved around the board that’s preparing the club for sale or investment?

Give Kev Long the gloves and play a keeper sweeper with 5 up top.

Right, back to footy manager........

Can you not see the pieces being moved around the board that’s preparing the club for sale or investment?
In order to appreciate how good something is, you have to realise the amazing achievements. Failure to acknowledge a glass ceiling is ridiculous. I've sat through this on numerous management courses, people telling me a 43 year old, over weight, ineleastic man like myself, should believe they can be the fastest man on the planet. Absolute nonsense. I can appreciate that I might be able to move my times forward a bit, to a point, but there also comes a point where you just look and go "Do you know what, thet achievement is f***ing amazing, like totally beyond what could fairly be expected", and with the constraints on the club, financially, this is about as good as it gets. The odd good cup run, the odd sneak into a Uefa place, but the next level here is continual Uefa cup or champions league qualification, and at present, Burnley are where they are, because this manager, the board and staff, make more right decisions than the vast majority of the 91 professional football clubs in this country. And they have to keep making more right decisions to stay at this level, and a continuity of doing that is an amazing, incredible feat, that should be appreciated and respected.

And I’ve sat through various Nags coaching pathways that stresses the absolute opposite.

The club and current management teams at board and player level have done wonders for the club with the current constraints, I agree.

But you don’t sit back and admire your achievements, you create new opportunities, you develop your product, and you create financial pathways to do this.

It’s a business, this is how businesses are run.

so you have decided that continual progress is defined by getting in to Europe ?. I consider progress as Dyche being able to build a squad that doesn't require knackered players who give everything to have to play every game

What we have achieved is in my opinion way beyond amazing, but the way you have defined progress, with total respect is a little simplistic - it can be in many forms.

Progress in professional sport is surely measured by results? An improvement on the results trend of the last 3 seasons is to continue to be going above 54 or 55 points.

Why does it matter if "Knackered" (some may argue cohesive, fit, more professionally prepared, well drilled players) players have to play every game? Where is the evidence that a change to a larger squad, with greater rotation would yield better results? Which clubs have done this at a similar level to Burnley with greater results? The changing of that model has cost plenty of clubs, such as Stoke, Middlesborough and Aston Villa, but I don't see the same success stories.
