Kevin Long

Post by Clarets232 » Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:28 am

Just thought I’d make a topic about Kevin. Been reading this forum for about 2 years now and always seen big Kev slated. I myself have been a bit critical to be fair but I must say, what a step in for Mee he has been. He looks every bit a premier league player as anybody else on the team and he is an absolute credit to Burnley. Hopefully he gets a testimonial as I for one will definitely be going

Likewise.

Think he’s been outstanding. Almost don’t want us to sign a Gibson replacement now because it would be very unfair for anyone to play ahead of him if Mee/Tarks are injured now.

He's done very well when called upon. I can't recall him being slated on here - an odd poster perhaps. On the whole he's been recognised as valuable to the squad and a reliable back-up.

He's done a sterling job on most occasions. However. We do need another centre half.

What you have seen recently from Kevin long is what we have always had from Kevin long.

He’s steady, always has been. A decent championship centre half with an excellent attitude as back up. That’s exactly what we need and exactly what we have.

If Mee and Tarky are injured then what?

Long and Dunne as our Premier League centre back pairing.

Fine, dependable professional who never lets us down.
Knows the club inside out, having grown with it through our finest period in 50 years.
Recently turned in some very good performances too.
Clubs like ours need players like him to get on.

Has proven to be a very good 3rd choice centre back over the past few games. Hope we’re looking for a young centre back as well though to develop.

That is absolute worst case scenario though - both being injured at the same time. Could say the same about United or Liverpool - they look weak if both their first choice CB’s were injured.

Also think finding a home for Gibson will not be easy. Hopefully easier if Watford stay up!

Of course it is, but it's the reason why we need 4.

It wasn't too long ago that we had 3 injured forwards, for example.

He will have done his international chances no harm since stepping in for Ben. He is dependable but we do need a fourth centre half, particularly with Tarkowski being inevitably in demand in the next few months. I think what is worth considering is someone who is predominantly a centre half but who can also play at full back. We had Michael Duff for a while. Craig Dawson is in this camp (though I think this has passed us unless Watford go down, plus we need a younger player).Gomez of Liverpool is another example.

I say this having watched Bardsley in the lat 7 games. I really like him-hard in the tackle, street wise and suspect a good guy to have around. He probably edges being our first choice RB. However going forwards his passing, crossing and general distribution is not up to a top half PL standard. Also if Taylor is not fit, Pieters is an automatic, however any PL manager is going to look at our team sheet with both these players starting and is going to target us .

The game has changed also-more clubs like Wolves playing 3 at the back, which means their wide men with be supporting their wide strikers and having mobile right back in a rigid 442 formation will be our biggest priority

Kev has been excellent since the restart. Kev looks like he has played along side Tarkowski all season

Players that can slot straight in like Kevin are worth their weight in gold, particularly when they never moan. This shows the lIkes of Gibson up to be the fraud that he is as well.

We don’t look any less solid with Kevin in which is also testament to the coaching staff in terms of players seamlessly knowing and implementing the structure

He's a player who knows his strengths and weaknesses. He's decent in the air, in the tackle and reads the game reasonably. He's not great with the ball at his feet and you can tell that by the speed he shifts it to someone else.

I am absolutely fine with that. How easy is it to find a player who can step in to be solid and also be fine with sitting on the bench for the forseeable? I offer you Gibson, m'lud.

Long is one of the first names on the teamsheet for ROI. He would have been first on the sheet for us by now if either Mee or Tarks or had lost form or been injured long term

I have to say Long has been very, very good since he came into the team. A dependable, no-nonsense centre back, who plays to his strengths and does the simple things right. I've been very impressed by his attitude and performances.

Not sure about that at all , as Duffy has been one of the stand out players of late for Ireland .

Big day over here tomorrow as Jack is buried , quite a few things planned in the media :|

I like him alot.

I know people will say “If he was better he’d play instead of him”. But had K Long played the amount of games B Mee has he’d be a hell of a lot better.

Agree with Tribesmen. He’s behind Duffy, Egan and Ciaran Clark so gets on the bench. He’d play if it was my team.
