how does he not get an England call up yet Maguire actually plays and cost 90 million ??
Southgate needs to give his head a wobble

Re: Tarkowski
Most people would agree with Southgate that Maguire is currently England’s best centre back. On current form it’s hard to look beyond Tarkowski for second choice - but he’s also right footed. Worth bearing in mind that Southgate hasn’t named a squad for months - during which time we’ve probably seen Tarkowski hit his best form - so it’s not really fair to blame him.

Re: Tarkowski
Have seen him get even better since becoming acting captain. Towering and imposing but yesterday he was really drilling long passes to our players. Possibly the best centre half I have seen in my long time of watching the clarets that goes back to the early 60's

Re: Tarkowski
Agree, Tarks has had an immense season and seems to have got better since being made captain. Just watched Maguire against Chelsea, he's been awful.
Re: Tarkowski
Tarkowski is like a man mountain. He's been superb all season. Mind we defend better and more often than we attack so it gives him the scope but my does he take it.

Re: Tarkowski
maguire was a cart horse today.
He strikes me as that big kid at school, who is not very good but much bigger than the rest of us so barges and pushes his way through and so looks good. Gets found out, when it counts.

Re: Tarkowski
Let’s face it, a lot of Burnley fans have a gripe with Maguire because he regularly plays for England and Tarkowski doesn’t. Pickford gets the same treatment.

Re: Tarkowski
Just seen McGuire being not at all good
Re: Tarkowski
I remember Maguire scored a great header from a corner, for England.
Been living off it, ever since.
Pickford...never felt he was a top keeper.
A keeper who could be....
Then that failed to materialise.
In neither case does that count as Burnley bias.
Pope is the best keeper . He has the all round maturity.
Henderson is where Pickford was but is a better keeper than him, already. He could go on to be number one, eventually. He could get the job too early, owing to Southgate and youth over experience.
Tarkowski v Maguire. Certainly Tarkowski at present. Not always the case.
Pope and Tarkowski in same team better than Pope and Maguire.
Re: Tarkowski
If you put Maguire into our defensive setup he'd look outstanding.
Re: Tarkowski
For Burnley sake I hope Tarks doesn’t play for England. Obviously for his sake I hope he does. One thing is for certain. He is currently the second best cb in the pl and McGuire is not number 1. Tarks and Pope would Transform Chelsea into serious title challengers. Well they would if Chelsea could afford the 150 million and we were stupid enough to sell them

Re: Tarkowski
As mentioned above, Maguire is a playground bully. Good against average. As soon as he comes up against pace and movement he’s screwed.
The captaincy has taken Tarks to another level. He’s not keeping it though. The armband belongs on Mr. Burnley’s left arm

Re: Tarkowski
I'm sure Tarks is better in the air, possibly a better tackler too. but 4-4-2, and the way we defend as a unit certainly helps.

Re: Tarkowski
I thought Drissa Diallo looked good in his brief stay with us. If memory serves me right Joe Royle took him to Ipswich where he picked up a bad injury. He then played out the rest of his career in the lower divisions.
We have had some top class centre halves. Colin Waldron, Billy Rodaway, Steve Davies (dare I mention), McGreal, Michael Duff, Ben Mee etc.
Tarkowski has looked every bit an England International since he first arrived.

Very true, he plays for England remember and Pickford has been brilliant when playing international football so I don’t understand it.
He’s a top centre half

Re: Tarkowski
Why would he look better playing for Burnley than he does for Man U - I’d have thought it’s a damn site easier defending for Man U.
Maguire has been bang average this season. He’s making 2 or 3 basic errors every game.

Because we defend more as a team, we push up less, we give the attacking players much less room. Maguire is left 1 on 1 far more often and gets far less protection from the midfield than Tarks does.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:42 pmWhy would he look better playing for Burnley than he does for Man U - I’d have thought it’s a damn site easier defending for Man U.

Still don't think he's better though.
Re: Tarkowski
Nail on head. Burnley fans thought Keane was the bestest, then Mee, now it’s Tarks. I really wouldn’t take much notice of what most Burnley fans say.

Yes, some people should be a bit ashamed of themselves.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 10:54 pmAnd do you remember when the ‘Mears for England’ chants started?
But Tarky vs McGuire? A very close contest

Yes, what makes you think I don’t understand what Ian said? I also know that he wears his heart very much on his sleeve with matters Burnley-related and that often clouds his judgement, as it does with a lot of us. I didn’t see any posts praising Maguire during Man Utd’s recent unbeaten run, yet there’s plenty of criticism as soon as he has a poor game.
Maguire is a good player, as is Tarkowski. There’s not a lot between them but the fact that professional football coaches and managers clearly rate Maguire more leads me to trust their qualified opinion.

Never forget John Pender
Re: Tarkowski
Tarkowski should’ve been a permanent fixture in the England set up over the past few years now. You can guarantee if he was playing for a top six club, he would have 10+ caps by now, not 2.
Maguire and Gomez will be regulars, because they play for United and Liverpool.
Tarkowski deserves to be in ahead of the likes of Mings, Keane and Stones though.

I do think Tarkowski has progressed loads this season and the gap has certainly closed but that’s a fair comment

Re: Tarkowski
Tarks, while I was always a big fan of his attitude and general play, had those limitations that I can understand Southgate wouldn’t like. I get it. But this year especially since restart, he’s been striding around like fricking Beckenbauer. Calm interceptions, pinging balls around (the one out right to Brady on Saturday anyone? ) and of course making last ditch tackles look easy... he’s gone from an Audi stuck in 3rd gear to a cruising Rolls Royce.

Re: Tarkowski
And he has looked just as good on the left. His passing with is left is impressive for the wrong foot.
Re: Tarkowski
Because a lot of the time we defend with 8 men behind the ball, even at home. At United you've got 1 holding midfielder to protect you, even the full backs are pushing forward a lot.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:42 pmWhy would he look better playing for Burnley than he does for Man U - I’d have thought it’s a damn site easier defending for Man U.

Re: Tarkowski
The same people who said Keane would be England captain and the best central defender in the league. I think people still don’t understand defenders look an awful lot better defending compact at Burnley with 10 other players defending with them.
Look at David Luiz and Mustafi against City at the weekend, park the bus Arsenal made those two look like world beaters.

Re: Tarkowski
Aside from VVD and Laporte there probably aren't any word class centre halves in the prem and even those two will probably never be as good as Rio Ferdinand or John Terry in their prime.

I think most people on here just think that Keane was an excellent player for us which he was.KRBFC wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 11:58 amThe same people who said Keane would be England captain and the best central defender in the league. Some people struggle to understand that if a defender isn't protected by his team mates elsewhere and left open then they may look worse.KRBFC wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 11:58 amThe same people who said Keane would be England captain and the best central defender in the league. Doesn't mean they've instantly become a crap defender though but hey ho
Re: Tarkowski
Tarks is good and think he should be in the England squad regularly and believe he is better than John Stones for example and would do very well in an England back three, he doesn't need to replace or be compared to Maguire. He is better than Keane for me, even when Keane was here and I liked MK a lot but agree if you play different formations and have less protection it can make a huge difference in how your perception of a player becomes and we know we wear claret tinted glasses most of the time.
