How do you know they have potential have you seen them?

Ok younger players with potential for the first team.

We can afford them. We just refuse to because we are ran like a corner shop. We are one of the richest clubs in world football and struggling to field a team at the start of the season because we flatly refuse to spend money.
I don't know if they have potential. I assume they have or we wouldn't have signed them.

We might be one of the richest clubs in world football, but almost every one of our competitors is richer and can and will outbid us on these young players who are good enough to improve our team.

Sorry that’s utter nonsense and you know it. Going by that logic then every other team in world football are at the mercy of the Premier league clubs.

We do target the wrong type of players in the wrong market. ( aging more experienced pro’s)

We need to be signing the next Defour/ Taylor and sooner rather than later. A threadbare squad before the season starts is unacceptable

Generally accepted by most that Burnley in the PL tend not to do any real transfer business until the last 7/10 days of the window but this thread has been on the go since 21 July. No wonder there is frustration being aired.

Not sure why people are so against signing players other clubs don’t want, Scott arfield anyone?
Spot on.

Add Heaton, Jones, Legzdins, Reid, Juke, Sordell, Walter's, Wells and Crouch too, they all played their part.

Have faith. Clive Holt will be typing up some telegrams to other clubs this week to see if there is anyone they don’t want.

According to some on here we'll be needing 2 CB's now. Going to be hard finding 2 that are not wanted.

I would laugh if we brought in Stephens and Dawson this window. At least they are Dyche friendly signings.
Always been modestly impressed by Stephens. Brighton have definitely outgrown him. They’ve built a decent side there and I think will surprise a few folk this season, was really surprised how often they were tipped for relegation in the pre season waffle.

Agreed. Teams that finish strong normally start strong. The shorter rest appears to have helped them in this regard. Mid-table for me.

Just read all 14 pages. A depressing read:

- general consensus is that Stephens is a legend but out of his depth in the PL, slow an immobile. A few allegedly have tome info it is true.

- think we’re in trouble this year.

- wouldn’t take Wood (would be a “step back”’for them

Hoping we are not spending £45-£50k pw on midfield back up - would seem odd.

Stephens is 31 so how long a contract would we need to offer to entice him? I would rather look elsewhere.

At 30 Dawson is maybe easier - a straightforward 2yrs + 1yr option.

Edit: add into the mix that CBs last longer and Dawson is currently facing a season in the Championship, perhaps with reduced wages from a relegation clause. Different kettle of fish with Stephens who I woukd take on a season's loan only.

Hopefully the Stephens boat sailed a while ago.

Signing another midfielder the wrong side of 30 is just storing up a larger rebuild in a year or two.

The club have a large number of first team players hitting their 30s and whilst players go on longer than they used to, we’ve got to bring the average age down or most of the squad will need replacing before long.

Many other clubs will have Djwaterhouse , Wellsys amongst others, that put on transfer rumours or things that are "happening" but dont.

To be honest I wouldn't be in too enthused anyway if Stephen's came, its 4 years too late IMO, and it's just another plugged gap for a season or so without actually improving the starting 11, which is what Mr Dyche wants and is targeting.

Can’t see Sean being the one to break the news though with things being how they are to be honest.
While solid pros might not have resale value, at the minute we’re firefighting....until Covid passes and the club has more assurance of how budgets might be restored to previous highs.

In fairness he's said that before and we have signed a player a day or two later. Think he's used to keeping tight lipped until the ink is dry and BFC have dragged it out for a day with photo shoots and video shoots (remember the Crouch video? Ouch!) when everyone has known for about twelve hours. We also have had players in the building who have subsequently decided not to sign. So he probably errs on the side of caution.
That said, as mentioned above. I'd not be thrilled by the signing.

I'm not saying he'd name him, (nobody in the press conference specifically asked about Stephens), but he usually says "there's one or two things that we are close to"

Erm, yes people do.

It’s why Sky Sports News dedicate hour upon hour to it,
It’s why papers have gossip columns and the like, it’s why some folk choose to wait outside a training ground to cheer a new signing as they drive past.........etc etc

Midfielder with bags of Premier league experience is just what we need and fits the Dyche model.

This fella will slot right into the team and hit the ground running, hope it comes off

In 2014 we were linked with Troy Deene and Craig Dawson who most felt would be superb additions, likewise in 2016 with Dale Stephens. All a little bit older of course but still good enough for us.Resale value aside have we progressed so much this board no longer deems them exciting or is it because we are now so familiar with their names?Whatever progression we have made and there is of course plenty, we are still a small club battling the odds in the Premier League.
True, and I think had all three been signed in those years they’d have made fantastic additions. I’d still very happily take Dawson. Stephens may also strengthen us in terms of numbers but I wouldn’t see him displacing Westy or Brownhill. Deeney is a good player but I’m not a fan of his personally.

I have no problem accepting what we are - a small club in this league battling the odds - but we also finished 10th last year, so have a good team on which we should be building. We have lost 4 players. We have/had £40m in the bank. We really need some younger, first-team ready players and yet seem to be dithering when we’re in our best possible position to push on.

Dawson would definitely be an improvement back up. Wouldn't be against Stephens in the sense that it's an experienced midfielder who we can utilise should similar to last night happen. We could push Brownhill out wide and not weaken the midfield overall. It wouldn't strengthen us in any way but would be useful if not ideal.

I would argue having Stephens on the bench rather than Benson would strengthen us?

I cannot understand why we are allowing ourselves to run the squad that thinly that we have three U23s on the bench, and an U23 in the starting line up for our opening fixture. Surely some championship players would add strength to our squad purely as back ups - £500k - £1m signings purely to add depth.

There is something going on at the club and I hope this is resolved prior to this window closing or it could be a very difficult period through to January.

Technically strong and CREATIVE central midfield player in the £15-20 million pound 'quality range' is our most urgent requirement. Cork has been brilliant but (imo) is past his best. Squad fillers (in any position) are the last thing we need.

Although only saw him a couple of times out wide I thought Brownhill looked very good, especially against Palace last season

Our central midfield is too weak in terms of strength, height and pace (and has been for years)

Normally would agree - but given current circumstances the likelihood of us spending £15-20m is low.

With that in mind, it's either continue with a bench of U23s, which will have to form part of the starting 11 as fixtures, injuries and suspensions arise, or we sign some decent back up to support the group.

We currently have six of our normal first team squad out injured. Barnes, Mee, Cork, Tarky?, Gudders and Brady. Are you seriously suggesting that we bring in 500k - £1 million signings just to cover whilst the Injured players become fit again? Because I'll tell you one thing, players of that standard would never play again once the main players are fit. All they would do is collect a big wage every week. Not exactly sensible financial planning.

Far better, IMHO to wait to see what happens in the window. If Tarky, or A N Other leaves, then we can probably bring in two or three very decent players instead and with a fully fit squad we might soon look like a very good team again.

Let's wait until the window closes before we get too despondent eh?

Although only saw him a couple of times out wide I thought Brownhill looked very good, especially against Palace last season

Our central midfield is too weak in terms of strength, height and pace (and has been for years)
I think Brownhill has been very impressive in the middle. His energy and use of the ball is an upgrade on Cork and he's only going to improve.

One of the few positives out of the current circumstances are that he potentially is playing himself into a guaranteed starting position going forward.

Any normal end to last season would have seen him make a few substitute appearances and no doubt start this season on the bench too.

I’m trying my best not to be. I still think there are plenty of potential signings out there that we could/should be looking at. In fact, I’m struggling to think of any signings that I envy from our direct competitors.

I think it’s more the despondency of Dyche on the issue that is getting me down/worried. That and toegate.

Agreed. Thought he was outstanding last night and I’m enjoying watching him in the middle.

Given that none of us really know what's happening, it's best just to wait and see. Personally, I can see Tarks leaving, which is a shame, but if we can bring a couple of very decent players in with the money, and get some injured lads back, then I don't see why we can't have another very decent season.

Leave the despondecy until October 6th when you may not need it.

Give over man. We need a cb, cm and right-footed winger. All 3 capable of starting immediately if necessary. We have known that for months. You are now saying we have to sell to get that? What's more you think we should wait to do it. Your fast joining the happy clapper club with Eddie and Paul etc.

I get where we are with the budget, but we have cleared lots of wages with the ones that we let go. We have to take a calculated risk in order to give us a fair chance of staying up. Not surrender.

Hope you’re right mate (not about Tarks). I’m trying my very best. Shouldn’t have drunk so many beers whilst watching the game last night...!

You have your point of view and I have mine. I'm not into taking risks with the future of BFC. I've seen what happens at other clubs when people do things like that.

Brighton fans seem to think the Dale Stephens to Burnley transfer is happening.
