As much as I’d rather villa go down, good enough for them. Shocking to fire Pearson.

I'm just hoping that they're not replaced by Brentford or Fulham.

To be fair Steve, I was listening to Deeney on Radio 4 earlier. He really liked Pearson, and is gutted he’s gone... but by the same token he has a really good relationship with the owners and does not want to be disloyal to them or as a club...
Not the best frame of mind for a game.

Re: Watford...
Pretty sure the Watford method of regularly changing manager has its admirers on this forum for some inexplicable reason.
It's never done much apart from just about keep them afloat in the PL, 11th is the highest they've finished.
There doesn't seem to be any long term thinking and it's potentially going to be their undoing this season.

Been a hectic day so did not see the game. I’ve never liked Deeney... that changed earlier, he really was torn to the point you could hear it in his voice. He’s truly gutted, more or less said... he would have kept us up, but I have to suck it up out of loyalty.

Re: Deeney. Not many strikers show up against City. Running around like a blue arsed fly and never seeing the ball.
I saw him early on at LB, in open play.
Hoping he hasn't been tapped with an omelette.

Past his sell-by date. Perhaps 4 - 5 years ago
Re: Watford...
Under contract until 2021 and he is past his sell by date is TD IMO. Not worth paying a transfer fee of a few million although it is said that many players under contract do not have a reduction in pay should the club get relegated-so there may be a bit of a fire sale down at Watford who must now be favourites to go down.

Pearson's a shocking, sociopathic dickhead.
But sacking him on the eve of the season is suicide. Goodbye Watford and I think you've just bought lucky, lucky Villa another year in the top flight.

Totally baffling how they expect it to keep working. How do you build? No fan of Pearson, far from it...
but was the fact That Pearson was in line for circa £10m bonus for keeping them up, before moving on in the summer anything to do with it, perhaps?

Surely they would prefer paying Pearson £10m than to get relegated? And,if they stay up hasn't he got a case against them for some (if not all) of the bonus?elwaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 11:51 pmTotally baffling how they expect it to keep working. If Luton can beat our esteemed neighbours tomorrow, and one of Charlton, Middlesbrough or Birmingham lose, then it's likely that the Watford v Luton derby will be back after 15 years .... Charlton are away at Leeds, incidently !

Some people earn less than £100 a day (probably the majority) with alsorts of worries & function properly to make a do, he's earning far more than a excess of £1000 a game which is a tenth time more & more besides, any s**t he's got going on his head or in his life it's doesn't & shouldn't matter, it's not life threatening somebody he liked as got the sack, big deal, a working man worries about feeding his family & paying the bills & maybe not in the best health with all this going on.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 10:30 pmTo be fair Steve, I was listening to Deeney on Radio 4 earlier. Completely agree with the thread. Deeney and Crew were part of the “Null and Void” crowd and saying they didn’t want to play for fear of risking their families health. Then they come back and get in trouble for partying anyway! Losers. And I wish nothing but the worst for Gino Pozzo. He runs the club poorly, with very little regard for the managers in his employ. I really do want Watford to go down.

Re: Watford...
Not a surprise to see Watford seemingly throw the towel in. Deeney wanted the re start cancelled. He then led by example and refused to return to training while all his team mates did, then backed down and claimed it was only ever the initial part and he was always fully committed. Last night he basically downed tools during the game which resulted in Mullins dragging him off.
You really wouldn't want a coward leading by example during a tough time.

Re: Watford...
Watford actually put in some effort yesterday which they have lately not done much of. Of course they had little chance against this opposition.
Deeney is not what he was and Watford fans aren't so keen on him anymore.
I thought there managerial system was to keep the same coaching and recruiting team and the manager is just there to manage what he's given. The theory behind it being that good managers move on (for example Mackay, Rogers, Silva) and bad ones need to be shifted, and you don't get a massive upheaval each time like we did when Coyle left.
Watford's academy used to be well thought of but of the team that faced Man City only Marriapa came through the ranks and he's now 33.

Re: Watford...
Bizarre decision to pot Pearson before games against of all teams, Man City and Arsenal. They'd have been up against it anyway against City. All that upheaval just days before a game they needed something, anything; from. Can't have done the players any good at all.
As mentioned above. Players partying and seemingly not being up for a restart didn't win them many admirers even amongst their own fans.
I found it a bit bizarre the commentator suggesting the Pozzo model 'Works for them' last night.
It clearly doesn't. They seem to be in a relegation scrap every season and potting their manager every few months can't be anything than counter productive.

Re: Watford...
Would be nice to think we might sign Hughes, Sarr or Deulofeu when they go down but more likely to be Deeney and Dawson.
Re: Watford...
Every season I've thought they were going down and they've stayed up comfortably. This season I thought they'd be fine and they're on the brink.
Deeney would have been a superb Dyche forward a couple of years ago, probably wouldn't happen now, maybe for the best.
Hughes and Cleverley could do a job for us but they'll be on decent wages.

Had they kept Pearson he could have been the scape-goat. Instead now the Board and management will be. I actually don't think they would have done better last night and in the last game v Arsenal with him still there, but why take the risk.

Norwich, Watford and Bournemouth going down to be replaced by Leeds West Brom and Forest would be great in terms of North-South balance and proper clubs in the prem

As has been noted earlier, Norwich is (slightly) further north than Birmingham - West Brom replacing them hardly affects any geographical imbalance. Fans of all 3 potential relegation clubs probably think their teams are entirely “proper”.
Apart from that...

Re: Watford...
I suppose it sends a message to the current members of our team, the grass isnt always greener,Gray coudnt wait to leave the Turf, and since he has he's been on a slippery slope to oblivion, suppoze the 18 million we got for him constitutes picking Watford's pocket big style, but if they give him a run in the Championship he will certainly get them goals.
Re: Watford...
Thanks for the input. There would be a net northern shift from that scenario but thanks for your pub trivia fact on Birmingham and Norwich. Most people (and certainly broadcasters) would regard Forest, West Brom and Leeds as old fashioned big clubs and welcome additions to the PL.Middle-agedClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 10:54 amAs has been noted earlier, Norwich is (slightly) further north than Birmingham - West Brom replacing them hardly affects any geographical imbalance. Re: Watford...
Liverpool supposed to be looking at Sarr - we have enough Stoke contacts to understand if Deulofeu would fit in the dressing room, but i suspect we would find he is likely to be on/wanting high wages - Hughes has the potential to be a good signing if he allows us to shape his game and attitude - he has looked an unhappy sort for a long time though
Re: Watford...
Andre looks like a fish out of water in the Premier League. Thought he was very good for us and suits our style more. However it looks like he's totally lost his conference. Needs another move to resurrect his career.
As for Deeney, would have liked to sign him a few years ago, he would have been perfect for our system. However he looks past it and disinterested, and quite clearly his legs have gone.
Not sure I'd have anyone from their squad tbh

Thank you for pointing this out..... it is a very eye opening perspective, both new and original. As an elite sportsman playing in the worlds biggest sporting league I did not understand how the others struggle from day to day.... or I’m not and I am well aware and take it as understood, the above. Please feel free to work out which applies.

Why does 'he earn £x, so he is immune to mental challenges' always come up on here.
He recently had a son that was born poorly and has been suffering breatheing issues - that alone right now is enough for anyone to deal with. In fact even without covid it would be.
On top of that he probably feels significant pressure in his high profile position and pressure of keeping the team up.
