Just spotted... 74/75 season
Re: If we finish 8th...
That's for the Premier League's Europa League spot, as technically there's only one place allocated for the league and the other two are for the cup winners.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 10:23 pmThat’s what I thought, but there’s a dotted line around Mann Utd on the BBC league table implying that 5th would get a CL place if City do win.

It will have been a total turn around and marvelous feat from our lads since the debacle on New Years day against Villa, fantastic achievement with the injuries and all that has gone on with lads not renewing contracts etc.

Re: If we finish 8th...
Finishing 8th would be fabulous. I’d be happy with 9th or 10th. Isn’t each place worth an additional £2million? So the Clubs finances would benefit and hopefully potential signings.
Let’s enjoy Sunday.

Ok, so that suggests a possibility of eight teams going into Europe.

Re: If we finish 8th...
no it doesnt. It says that if Wolves/Chelsea won their respective European competitions AND finished OUTSIDE top 6/7 then England could have 8 teams (9 if both finished outside top 6/7). Given neither Wolves or Chelsea will finish outside the top 7 it's a non starter.
Re: If we finish 8th...
Unfortunately that article was written by someone who either (1) doesn't know the rules, or (2) does know the rules, knows that the rules have changed, and doesn't tell us that the rules have changed. I suspect it's the former.
Last year the rule was maximum 7 from any country. I don't think that has changed.

Re: If we finish 8th...
If either Man Utd or Wolves win the Europa League final but did not finish in a Champions League qualifying position then they would become England's 5th entry in the CL next season and would enter at the 2nd qualifying round stage. If Chelsea were to win the Champions League as well but did not finish within the 4 CL qualifying positions they would enter next season's CL instead of the 4th position PL club who would then take the automatic Europa League group stage entry instead.
The most English teams permitted entry to the 2 UEFA competitions is 7 per season. Spain, Germany and Italy are also covered by the 7 maximum limit but all other countries have a lower maximum entry.

No European journey but a great season overall. My personal favourite being the win at Old Trafford.
Re: If we finish 8th...
Finishing above Arsenal and Everton would be fantastic. Considering what we have spent in comparison to virtually every club below us. 8th/9th is remarkable.

Re: If we finish 8th...
More significant is the money 8th position pays. I assume budgets were set at us finishing 17th at the start of the season-ie a pessimistic view assuming we avoided relegation. So 8th would give us an additional £18m, whilst the lowest we can finish ie 10th gives us £14m

Both my kids have Arsenal supporting 'mates' who have spent years laughing at my 2 for supporting Burnley. If we finish above them I will allow them raise their middle fingers and shove it right in their glory seeking faces. Social distancing rules will apply.

Re: If we finish 8th...
Not going to pretend I didn't want Europe and say "its for the best", but it probably is with our threadbare squad who must be shattered after this intense period. If we had to narrowly miss out, this is the year to do it because being in Europa has no real financial benefit, so it's only fun if you can actually go to the games... and we can't!
Priority now is:
1. Keeping Dyche.
2. Keeping this team together.
3. Adding a small number of quality players that will help us maintain/improve on this level.
In that order.

The amount we get is also governed by how many times we are on TV above the minimum and this, i assume will have been affected by the lockdown.warksclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:17 amMore significant is the money 8th position pays. Last season Newcastle (11th place) got just under £7million more than Watford (9th place). I doubt we were on more than the minimum payment so that may reduce what our total share will be

They must all hate us!
Over the next few week there will be Managers/Directors of Football writing and submitting their end of season reviews/reports to the Board, knowing full well that the response to their standard justification "We did the very best that could be expected given our financial limitations" will be met with the response: "But what about Burnley?"

Also the extra money we get from finishing higher will go to paying bonuses to the players and coaching staff. The season we finished 7th didn't we have higher bonus payouts as a reward, not sure if all the extra money is taken up but certainly some of it will be, no bad thing to reward them.

Re: If we finish 8th...
Some tweets...
Bro tell me, did Arsenal spend £160m in the summer to be behind Burnley after 37 games and to be 10th?
Arsenal welcomes Burnley as their new Rival.
We spent some £54m more than them, finishing 3rd is justified unlike Arsenal that spent £160.40m to compete with Burnley & Sheffield to finish 10th.

Qualification to the group stage would normally bring in around £10m+ in revenue all told, howeverNewClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:22 amNot going to pretend I didn't want Europe and say "its for the best", but it probably is with our threadbare squad who must be shattered after this intense period. - the next time we qualify for Europe we must replace all the wooden seats at the Turf - that would be expensive but raise the capacity (I would move the new seats currently in the Cricketfield Stand into the Bob Lord and fill the Cricket Field with rail seating - it is just safer, even when not set for standing);
- it is unlikely that clubs could have spectators at full capacity so income is reduced;
- the protocols on travelling and ground prep will make it substantially more expensive just to take part

If we were forced to remove the wooden seats I was thinking more about being prudent in our spending and doing what should have been done in the Cricketfield in the first place - Rail seats are the best answer for safety in there when fans persist in standing, even if the seats are not locked for standing

I read £1.5m for qualifying and total of £8m for winning it? Understand that excludes Matchday revenue but we wouldn’t get that anyway?Chester Perry wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 12:09 pmQualification to the group stage would normally bring in around £10m+ in revenue all told, however

Re: If we finish 8th...
2 top half finishes in 3 seasons is brilliant. Hopefully we can finish above Arsenal for the first time since 74/5 season. We currently have more points than the bottom 2 teams added together ! We have finished above Everton in 2 of last 3 seasons. Don’t fancy Sheff U winning at Southampton so come on you Clarets. Beat Brighton and we hopefully will finish 8th. Personally I think playing in Europe next season would be a negative for us. As well as the virus situation we simply do not have a big enough squad....... yet. Hopefully one day but not ready yet

Re: If we finish 8th...
I agree.
There are so many positives to celebrate but I do think playing in the Europa League would do more harm than good. Ties may well be played behind closed doors and with such a short break in between this season and next I'd worry about player burn out and injuries.
Remember we may finish this season only 5 or 6 points off the Champions League spot so that should spur us on for next season.
But to be jostling for position with Arsenal and Tottenham and finishing above Everton is quite an achievement.

the key element is the market pool - English tv pays more than any other country so it's pool share is bigger and split between the 3 clubs involved
you would also expect an uplift in sponsorship income and other commercial activities

Re: If we finish 8th...
I think playing in Europe last time out was the high point of my 50 year Burnley supporting career. Going to Istanbul & Greece was as good as it will ever get.
Why wait for "one day but not ready yet" that day may never come again.
