Re: Burnley Reserves League Winners 61/62 - can someone name the players in the photo?
Back row is David Walker, Walter Joyce, John Talbut, Ronnie Fenton, Harry Thomson, Brian O'Neil, George Bray (trainer), Willie Irvine, Willie Morgan.
From row is: not sure of first two (one in front could be Fred Smith) but then Trevor Meredith, not sure, Andy Lochhead, Arthur Bellamy, Ian Towers, Mick Buxton, Johnny Price.
Trophies are the Central League and the Lancashire Senior Cup.

I should know the one behind him and I'm kicking myself for not getting that, but the one behind the Central League I can't place at all.

If only, if only a few more of these guys had played in a squad rotation kind of method in spring '62?
Well before my time but that's a great reserve team isn't it?

Just look at the last three (other than George) on the back row - O'Neil, Irvine and Morgan - what price those three now?

We'll never know if they'd have helped us over the line in '62 but hindsight's a wonderful thing and winning the reserve league back then was still an achievement in itself.ClaretTony wrote: βTue Jul 21, 2020 11:31 pmJust look at the last three (other than George) on the back row - O'Neil, Irvine and Morgan - what price those three now?
We haven't had times as good as then until now so let's enjoy the present as we appreciate the past. It's a great time to be a Claret.

They all made their debuts in the following season but who knows? Three simply outstanding players.Rowls wrote: βTue Jul 21, 2020 11:38 pmWe'll never know if they'd have helped us over the line in '62 but hindsight's a wonderful thing and winning the reserve league back then was still an achievement in itself.

I think the one below David Walker could be Billy Marshall

Sean and others go on about the workload since the resumption with drink breaks and 5 subs allowed. We will have played 9 games in 34 days and after their cup final Arsenal will have played 13 games over 45 days. Back in 1962 including the Cup semi- final on March 31st and final on May 5th we played 13 games over 36 days with no subs and no drink breaks using 19 players

What surprises me about that photo is that it was our 2nd eleven and so many went on to become phenomenal first teamers-O Neil, Thomson, Morgan, Irvine, Lockhead, Talbot-just to mention a few. Just does not happen today

Billy Marshall made more reserve team appearances that season than any other player however he left before the next season started he went to Oldham in August 1962.

If the player on front left is Billy Marshall then every single one of those players featured in the first team at one time or another.
Re: Burnley Reserves League Winners 61/62 - can someone name the players in the photo?
Here's a pic of the whole squad from 1961:
Burnley line up for a group photo at Turf Moor in Burnley, England, circa August 1961. Back row (left-right): C. Williamson, J. Gibson, Les Latcham, David Walker, Arthur Bellamy, A. Ashpell, D. Crompton, Brian O'Neil, John Auchie, Mick Buxton and Andy Lochhead. 3rd row: unknown, Walter Joyce, Peter Simpson, Ian Towers, Ian Lawson, Billy Marshall, Harry Thomson, Adam Blacklaw, Jim Furnell, Trevor Meredith, Charlie Govan, John Angus, John Talbut and Ray Bennian (trainer). 2nd row: John Connelly, Jimmy McIlroy, Alex Elder, Jimmy Adamson, Harry Potts (manager), Ray Pointer, Brian Miller, Gordon Harris and Tommy Cummings. Front row: unknown, Willie Irvine, H. Singer, Johnny Price, Ron Fenton, Fred Smith, Bill Poynton and unknown.
Looking at the original photo, I'd say the missing player is back row 7th from the left - D. Crompton.

The three unknowns you have on there are Burnley greats, two of them former managers and the other, someone who worked for the club in every decade from the 1930s to the 1990s.Grimsdale wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 9:37 amHere's a pic of the whole squad from 1961:

3rd row far left is Billy Dougall (someone on this message board knew him very, very well), front row left is Joe Brown and on the right my old friend George Bray.

Thanks for those reprises Tony. Not that I remember him as a player but I will have seen George play for us and well remember Dougall becoming manager and then having heart problems which forced him to step down.
And I note yet another Burnley player having dementia.

It was probably in the 1980s when I got to know George really well - he was Burnley through and through. Was it heart problems with Billy Dougall? I know he suffered badly with ill health towards the end of his life.mdd2 wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 10:14 amThanks for those reprises Tony. Re: Burnley Reserves League Winners 61/62 - can someone name the players in the photo?
Yes it was and in those days it was just the natural history of the disease as there were no treatments for the actual heart attack. Indeed what treatment there was probably increased deaths. Used to be 6 weeks bed rest and if that didn't kill you the next heart attack may well have done.

Three decent keepers there. Even the third choice, Jim Furnell, went on to play for Liverpool and Arsenal.

Definitely Peter Simpson behind the Central League trophy. Top lad was Peter, he came down from Sunderland as a teenager and stayed in digs on Ingham Street in Padiham, just a stone's throw from training at Gawthorpe. Stayed here for six years before moving on to Bury.
David Crompton is the missing player, he played many times for the Reserves but never featured for the first team. In fact he's the only player on the photo never to play for the first team.

Furnell was second choice at the time, and played once in the title winning team in 1959/60. It was five years later before Harry Thomson made his first team debut.Stan Tastic wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 10:32 amThree decent keepers there. Re: Burnley Reserves League Winners 61/62 - can someone name the players in the photo?
We have had some good keepers over the years as well as some shockers including in my early days McNulty who I think would have deputised for Jimmy Strong-strong he was not. Then we had Des Thompson, who I think had a brother who played at Preston in goal, followed by Colin and Adam, two greats. I did not rate Harry Thomson too highly in comparison but then did not see him much.Stan Tastic wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 10:32 amThree decent keepers there. i might be misremembering this, but didn't Harry Thomson save every penalty taken against him one season, until the last game, when Alan Ball put one past him for Everton.

Harry certainly had a long run of saving penalties topped off by the one away at Napoli where he broke their hearts.Stan Tastic wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 10:51 ami might be misremembering this, but didn't Harry Thomson save every penalty taken against him one season, until the last game, when Alan Ball put one past him for Everton.

Re: Burnley Reserves League Winners 61/62 - can someone name the players in the photo?
I can't confirm that but Ball scored the penalty in the 1-1 draw for Everton in the last game of the season. I do recall Harry saving two penalties in one week during that season, at Napoli and then at Blackpool. He also saved a penalty on his debut two seasons earlier at Leicester. that he'd given away himself. He did have a terrific record at saving pens.Stan Tastic wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 10:51 ami might be misremembering this, but didn't Harry Thomson save every penalty taken against him one season, until the last game, when Alan Ball put one past him for Everton.

Des Thompson's brother was George - he played for Scunthorpe, Preston, Man City and Carlisle. Younger brother Des played for York, Burnley and Sheffield United. Dad George was also a goalkeeper. He played for York and Southampton.mdd2 wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 10:46 amWe have had some good keepers over the years as well as some shockers including in my early days McNulty who I think would have deputised for Jimmy Strong-strong he was not. Indeed there is, the turnstiles are just about visible in the group photo.
When I was a tiddler my Dad paid the extra for me get my "special place" against the perimeter wall.

It was there for a good number of years after I started going but had not, in that time, been used in terms of charging extra. But it was an extra penny or two to go in there at a time in the 1950s.

I saw Dave Crompton play many times for Wigan Athletic in the late '60's when they were in the Cheshire League. Very good midfielder and someone I took particular note of because of his Burnley links.

Think Dad paid 3d extra for me. Some very special and vivid memories of big moments in games in the late 50's from my vantage point against that wall. Not least Jimmy Robson scoring five goals in the 8-0 demolition of Notts Forest in '59 I think. Also a very special Pilky goal in the FA Cup against Blackburn at the CF end.ClaretTony wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 5:06 pmIt was there for a good number of years after I started going but had not, in that time, been used in terms of charging extra. I also remember going in the enclosure with my dad in the 1950s.and we would have to pay extra. Great memories. There was also an enclosure (terraced) in front of the old stand.Royboyclaret wrote: βWed Jul 22, 2020 4:48 pmIndeed there is, the turnstiles are just about visible in the group photo.
