It's not who is the best player, it's who is the footballer of this particular year. Liverpool have won the league easily and their most influential player has been Jordan Henderson. It isn't relevant how many assists KDB has or how many goals he's scored.SalouClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:13 amI don't mind Henderson, Liverpool always play better with him in the team... but let's be honest, De Bruyne is streets ahead. 11 goals and 19 assists so far. For an individual award for player of the season, Henderson wouldn't make my top 5.

This is an award that Scott Parker won when his team finished bottom of the PL.

No it's not nonsense at all - it's not the most assists and goals of the year award - it's the footballer of the year. If it was about assists and goals then how do goalkeepers, defenders etc. win it?

I agree, and De Bruyne has been the better footballer.
In my opinion, of course

Henderson has led his team to the title and a massive lead over KDB's team. It's not about who is the better footballer, hopefully never will be, it's about one particular season.SalouClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:36 amI agree, and De Bruyne has been the better footballer.

Re: Footballer of the Year - Henderson wins
Reading this thread i'm baffled that many don't appreciate Henderson's role in the Liverpool system, there's a lot more to football than the fancy footwork and wing play of the forwards, if Henderson hadn't have driven this team on they would never have won the league so convincingly, and although he's not their most potent attacking outlet, he's invaluable to allowing the front 3, and the full backs to create.
I'd wager he along with VVD will be the 2 players that Klopp wouldn't want sidelined for a lengthy spell. And that tells you everything you need to know.

No one is questioning that, it's your lack of understanding of the award that is to be questioned.SalouClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:43 am...and De Bruyne has been the better footballer.

You're the one not understanding.
The award is for the player of the year, correct?
In my opinion, the player of the year is KDB. Is that so difficult to understand, or will you only be happy if I agree with you?

Re: Footballer of the Year - Henderson wins
Not for me either.
Not doubting his ability and as a player/leader has improved vastly from his back pass Henderson moniker, but player of the year, nah. I get he’s the captain and people speak highly of him, but take him out of that team and replace him with Keita, Wjinaludum, Fabinho or even James Milner you wouldn’t diminish that team.
Take out Mane’s goals this season, or Trents clean sheets and assists or VVD’s defensive aura and suddenly you have a weaker team. That for me is why I would not choose Henderson.

You might want to check their win % when he was out injured.MrTopTier wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 4:56 pmNot for me either.

No problems with the stats which show a positive when Henderson is in the team of 2.2 per game average to 2.38 when he is in the team equates to six points a season difference.

Re: Footballer of the Year - Henderson wins
Apparently the full title is: Football Writers' Association Men's Footballer of the Year
The Football Writers vote. There's no computer stats, it's just who they think deserved it.
I don't think many would argue that De Bruyne is a better footballer - for me, he's the best footballer in the world at this moment in time.
But being a leader like Henderson, you can do things that can't simply be measured in numbers and put into a table. When he's not playing, he's missed.

This particular award is for achievements on and off the pitch. Henderson did a lot of work off the pitch during lockdown - he led the players initiative to contribute to the NHS.SalouClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:58 am

In terms of on the pitch - I don’t think anybody thinks he is the best / most talented player last season. I have not heard one person say that. But he did have a massive influence on the pitch and in the games up to winning the title they did not lose a game on the pitch. Whereas hasn’t KDB played in 6 of City’s defeats ?
An no I’m not saying Henderson is a better player than KDB.

Re: Footballer of the Year - Henderson wins
Historically the Sportswriters vote for who they think is the most deserving of the award and is not about who is the best player. It usually can be defined by the most influential in a successful team often going to the main man for the league winners or the main man in a team reaching a cup final and used to be as late in the season as possible. Also includes the ‘off the field’ standing of the recipients. That explained why Rashford came third in the vote. As Liverpool won the Champions League, and World Club Champions Trophy since the vote last year, Henderson was always going to be a strong contender. He also played a leading role in what the Premier League Players did as regards their response to the Covid 19 pandemic. It is NOT a vote for ‘player of the year’.
