Anyone been in the shops etc today?

Been in town and first impressions were it seemed like a sci fi film. Surreal. Seeing so many in masks. Must admit havent been out much / in shops anyway. But went for a coffee at rhode island for a change of scenery from home 'office'.

Despite the strangeness of it (and the fact you didnt need one in the coffee shop) ive actually never seen town as busy this year even pre covid. Is it more confidence? Or people going out intrigued to see what its like? Bit of both.

Hopefuly sign of things to come. Even if the masks give people more confidence rather than more protection that has to be a good thing right?

The problem is, a lot of people will be priding themselves on what they can get away with. And ridiculing the whole thing.

Same people who think every rule is there to be broken.

Its not hard to comply. Some just choose to be awkward,

Strange. As when you can't pay at petrol stations, they take your car/registration details and ask for you to return to pay. It's happened a couple of times with me over the last 15 years when I genuinely forgot my wallet. Also, you can pay by card or use a cash machine.

Blackburn with Darwen now been designated an "area of intervention" because of rising levels of the virus, so the opening of gyms, pools and leisure centres postponed. (BBC)

I was in town today and wore my mask throughout including walking through town. I’ve made a conscious effort to wear it over the last week to get used to it and I was surprised how quickly I became accustomed to it.

Did a Friday morning shopping tour (sad, I know) to Tesco and Sainsbury in Burnley, local butcher and Booths in Barrowford. There was 100% mask wearing compliance in all of them.

I work in a shop and would say 95% of people have worn them. Of those who didn't, all bar one idiot got one out of their pocket or car when reminded. (There is a big sign on the door and I think the mask thing has been mentioned on the news). The idiot was given a mask which he proceeded to wear on his chin

We have some disposable masks but I've gone for the snood option. Will use it for running in the winter too.

The Tesco staff I spoke to last night said the same. They will have someone dishing free masks out if the want one but will not challenge a non wearer.
But stated the police could fine them if caught and wished to do so.

I was in Portugal last week and I think it's been mandatory there for a while, you can take them off once you're in a socially distanced restaurant or bar though for example so it's not too bad. It just became second nature to me after a day or two.

The problem I think we'll have with this is that the animosity created by idiots refusing to wear masks will mean that those people who legitimately don't have to wear one will also be on the receiving end of the animosity from do-gooders. For me its the whole "hidden disability" issue all over again.

Can those people who are expected to wear a mask please just do so, and can those people who will want to vilify those for not wearing one please refrain from judging as there may be a good reason behind it.

Been mandatory here since early April once you set foot out of your house (including putting the bins out).

Everyone back in the UK says it is not comfortable and so many don't want to wear but try wearing one when it's 34c outside and humidity is 80% in a one hour queue to vote as happened here a few weeks ago. Granted the punishments here are much harsher but despite the relatively high rate per capita of infections per day, there hasn't been anyone in ICU for quite almost a month and the death rate per capita is one of the lowest worldwide.

Given you only need to wear them inside a shop it's not very strict compared to other countries like Singapore.

Every station has a night window, they were using those at my local stations when the lockdown initially happened.

If they've got any sense then they'll make idiots who don't want to wear a mask use the night window, that way they can still refuse them entry to the shop.

as you know it's pretty much a disaster over here in the US. Shops here for the last few weeks (under new state legislation) are not allowed to let people in without a mask - you have to wear a mask out in public. I've only been out a couple of times since the order came into place and have seen only 1 person without a mask.

Pre-empted this by ordering specially made re-usable masks a number of weeks ago. Not had to use them yet as we've had our groceries delivered since late February. In fact we've had everything delivered, including paint. Amazing what you can get delivered online these days. Can finally make use of them at the corner shop as that's about the only contact we've had outside work with the outside world.
Wear visors and masks at work but we wore masks prior to Covid anyway.

You raise an important point Zlatan, and there is of course exemptions, but it's not always possible to immediate see hidden disabilities (asthma) is an obvious one that's not viewable, my uncle is a sturdy chap and he's relatively fit, but he suffers from asthma, so therefore he's exempt from mask wearing, is it really that much of a hassle to wear one in an enclosed space for a short period of time, it's not like your expected to wear it unless you're in an indoor space, so it's really shouldn't be that hard to comply if you have the will to do so.

And if it limits the spread of this virus all well and good, and we equally need to try and get the economy moving in the right direction, otherwise the fallout will last for a lot longer.

Two simple solutions to the problem.

1. The government make it law and fine anyone not wearing a mask and fine stores and companies not enforcing it to customers.
2. Anyone who thinks wearing a mask is pointless or doesn't want to wear one, stay at home.

Obviously people who medically or have a legitimate reason for not wearing a mask shouldn't but you know some people will just make a medical excuse for not wearing one when there'll be nothing wrong with them.

Yeah I’ve had to isolate, but I’ve been working from home anyway so it doesn’t really change much for me. They make you fill out a form on your return stating where you can be located for the next 14 days, this is day 6 and nobody has checked on me yet. I seriously doubt anyone is being followed up to see if they’re adhering to it.

Do fill out the form though because the queue for people who hadn’t bothered was 10 times the size of the one for people who’d done it online.

They come in handy sometimes. I finally decided to take the plunge and learn to ride a horse, been putting it off for years due to it predominantly being a female/kids pursuit. I'm old enough now that I no longer care...

Went into the local horse tack shop to buy some gloves and struggled to find a pair big enough, at which point the assistant announced that 99% of their customers are female.
