Re: Dire Straits
We used to do a bit of a jam night at The Cardigan Arms, a roughish pub in Leeds. My mate and I played guitars with Brendan Croker, who organised it. Anyhow, one week Brendan says 'My mate's joining us tonight, if that's ok fellas?'
We said fine, no prob, Brendan's mate poled up for the jam and it was Mark Knopfler. He's not a bad blues player tbh.

Re: Dire Straits
The other connection with Leeds is Steve Phillips. Until the virus he was still playing in the Grosvenor Hotel in Robin Hoods Bay most Tuesday nights.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 8:40 pmWe used to do a bit of a jam night at The Cardigan Arms, a roughish pub in Leeds. Your mate gets a mention on Steve’s wiki page.

Re: Dire Straits
What an outstanding gig. Thanks for the heads-up
Re: Dire Straits
You seem to have quite old musical taste for your age, JD (given this and a few other music based posts that I’ve seen of yours). Where did your musical tastes come from?
Not a criticism by the way, just interested considering you’re younger than me and I must admit, I loved a bit of Dire Straits as a youngster

Re: Dire Straits
One of life's little luxuries listening to " Money for Nothing" on full volume.

Don’t hear it as a criticism at all David - nice to be asked. Always liked them. My parents always used to listen to them when I was a nipper and I always liked Walk of Life back then.
I’ve grown up listening to a lot of sixties stuff that my dad grew up with...namely the Stones, Beach Boys, Searchers etc...but I’ve always loved the Shadows and there’s no doubt that there are similarities in the way that the Shadows and Dire Straits made those guitars sing.
Erasure and Keane remain my favourite groups so you can add a bit of synth-pop and alternative rock to the palette too!
See you tomorrow maybe!

Now I would’t usually admit to it, but I do like a bit of Erasure - I love a lot of the 80’s synth stuff - probably where my love of varieties of electronica came from.jdrobbo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 12:58 amDon’t hear it as a criticism at all David - nice to be asked. Aye, should be on tomorrow (or later today!) see you then
Re: Dire Straits
I first heard them on Charlie Gillette's Radio London show playing Sultans of Swing in 1977. It was such a breath of fresh air from punk and mostly crap around that time (rather like Kate Bush was). As a result I bought their first album.
That album is still one of my favourites - each song is a little story and the playing, including the understated guitar lead, is excellent (whilst not a great fan of the early Fleetwood Mac I do like the similarly understated guitar of late Peter Green).
Unfortunately for me anyway it was down hill with Dire Straits after that. I got their third album with Romeo & Juliet, but no longer have it. The rest of their work has become more about guitar riffs and tedious or sloppy lyrics.
