Praise for Richardson

Post by FeedTheArf » Fri Jul 24, 2020 9:58 pm

Ash Westwood discussing the young talents in the squad:

“ There's a young lad, Max Thompson, he's looked sharp in training. There's also a young kid, Rico - he's been out injured but was back with us today - and he looks like he's going to be a special player. They're in the best environment with us, but we keep them grounded, like we have with Dwight [McNeil] and who knows where they can go."

Might we see a glimpse of Richardson on Sunday?

I’d be very surprised if we saw Richardson this weekend given he hasn’t played since before Christmas

Glad to hear he's back training. Big year for him next year and hopefully he stays injury free.

Really positive to hear about some of the young lads looking promising.

Maybe Thompson might feature a bit more next season.

I got a feeling a lot of youngsters are going to be on the bench next season.... the team needing to save money.

A few young lads in the video. i'm guessing that Richardson was the lad they had chasing the ball around?

Who knows.

Maybe Dyche might see these lads stepping up to the plate next season. I might be wrong but didn’t Dyche give McNeil his first appearance last game of the season a few years ago. Might do this tomorrow

I like the look of Richardson from the little I've seen. Looks a clever player. Been out injured as mentioned above, so doubt he'd make the bench. Dyche has said he may give the younger lads a taste late on. Thompson has already had a taste. Be interesting to see how he develops.

The financial stakes are to high to throw the kids in at this level. They will have to prove themselves out on loan, or if they are special get the odd 10 minutes cameo roll of the bench

Indeed. He won't risk it when there's the difference between finishing 8th or 10th at stake. Unless we're 3-0 up with five minutes to go.

I’m not sure, but for some reason I have it in my head Dwight featured only due to an injury crisis and played himself into the team from there. Getting into the team that way would be considered “reverting to type” so to speak. Some of the most significant improvements to our team have happened because there wasn’t really an option.

Sure came on late in an end of season and the announcer saying something like ‘Dwight McNeil remember the name’!

Dyche has already said that it's unlikely he'll use them because the chairman has told him the league position is more important because of the extra money. Apart from Man City away, every game we've played since lockdown has never had more than one goal in it until last week at Norwich after the own goal. He's never going to throw the young lads on in a tight game.

Exactly. I never said he would throw them on in a tight game. Too much at stake financially as Sean said in his presser. Those two places mean a considerable amount more money. He did suggest he MAY give a few minutes at the end but that'd entirely dependent on the score. If we were looking comfortable for 3 points he may consider it for a few minutes at the end.

I expect he'll only play/try them when he's forced to, like he did with McNeil.

So are we still playing with the same line up that kicked off against Wolves in 2012? :D :D

Injuries seem to be a genuine concern for LR.

If he can get fully fit a loan to a lower league would seem to be a decent option.

Just listened to SD's interview on Clarets Player. He stated that he didn't believe in giving the young players game time until he considered whether they were ready for it. He has said before that likes giving young players a taste of the matchday prep and the atmosphere around the squad but I could only see players getting 5 minutes if we had already conceded and the final result was not in much doubt - however much he plays it down, I believe he is definitely interested in beating our PL points record and also in Popey winning the Golden Glove!

A lot of young kids at that age get injuries such as this, particularly if they grow a few inches. The lad is just 17 so no need to rush him.

And such a silly mistake to single out exceptional talents and start comparing them to a young kid who is coming back from an injury that’s kept him out for months.

Tony's right, players growing will get injuries at this age, and no need to rush. It's a long time since we had an England U16 schoolboy international. That's the level Lewis has hit, and set his marker with his performances at U23 level. He is a talent, he's been at the club for over half his life, and clocked up a lot of miles travelling all that time.

One to be patient with, and see where the journey takes him.

As for the comment, not many good at 17 who are still good at 27, I can't believe that. Most of the players who were good at 16/17 (good as opposed to just quick) have a very long career at that level and above, Milner, Gareth Barry, Rooney, Owen, Giggs, Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire etc are obvious ones.

James Milners not been a bad un down the years ... he was the youngest goal scorer in the PL till Rooney nicked it off him a few months later 🙂

I watched loads of Tier 1 Academy football between 2002-2008 and almost all the top players I saw at 12-16 have all had premier league careers.

What sort of player is Richardson, which current players might he be compared to in terms of style and position?

Fingers crossed, it’s great to hear that there may be some with first team ability on the not too distant horizon.

As a slight aside, for those regularly watching the youngsters, what it it that makes a player stand out as one for the future, at a younger age?

Dande’s post above shows that there will always be those that are physically better at a younger age - faster or perhaps stronger than their counterparts - but it doesn’t mean that they’ll be the ones that come through in the long term.

I don't watch youth football any more, but things that stood out for me were always kids trying to do the right thing, almost a 6th sense for an understanding of the game (this often gets called technical ability, but then gets confused with kids who can do all sorts of tricks with the ball, but don't understand the game), coupled with pace, balance and a good temperament. I never went a huge amount on strength or size, unless it was an added bonus to those items above. Then when you bring them in, are they coachable. Can they learn from structured chaos in terms of situations and solve the problem quickly, and learn from it.

All the best kids I saw (Greenwood, Foden, Zidane Iqbal, Jake Barrett (Didn't make it) etc had great balance

Helped coach a junior side, and enjoyed it, recommended a few players to the club from around the league. Got asked by the lad who ran all the local scouts really at that time to help them out, did so for a weekend, really enjoyed it, stayed doing it for nigh on 10 years as part of a team of scouts with great ability and huge passion for the game and the club. Some of those scouts are now head up teams of scouts for the likes of Liverpool, Man City and some were at clubs like Bury (Hence Callum Styles going there). Suppose the club didn't really appreciate what they had at the time being honest. The amount of games covered every weekend by probably no more than 12-15 people was incredible.

Gave up because of a mix of 1) Jason Blake and the changes he was bringing (closing down development centres in Manchester, West Yorkshire etc), requiring scouts to do more paperwork and less scouting, removing things that had really helped move the calibre of player we could attract forwards and minimising their impact on the club and also selling players I'd helped find to clubs, and 2) EPPP rules that were coming in at the time, that meant that players I was working hard to find and get signed at Burnley were just on a pitch for Liverpool, Blackburn, Everton, etc to come down watch and pay small compensation for players, to go into overstocked clubs, that blocked development routes (as seen by some of the best talent refusing to sign at 16 and move to Germany or other clubs).

It solves it for Burnley Random - in that Burnley scouts can now turn up, unannounced at any category 2/3/4 club and watch players without that club having any way to stop it. Whether it solves the issue for the development of players, is another kettle of fish totally. I think I did something around the England team that got to the Semi Finals of the World Cup (These are from memory, so could be slightly wrong, but you get the picture)

Pickford - Sunderland - had loans at lots of lower league clubs

1 Jordan Pickford - Sunderland with lots of very low lower league loans as a kid
2 Kyle Walker - Played first team football in championship for Sheff Utd at 16/17
3 Danny Rose - Poached from Championship Leeds to Spurs
4 Eric Dier - Coached at Sporting Lisbon, late Youth move to Spurs
5 John Stones - Played first team football at 16 in league one for Barnsley
6 Harry Maguire - Played first team football at 16 in League one for Sheff Utd
7 Jesse Lingard - Manchester United academy product
8 Jordan Henderson - Sunderland Academy - Playing Prem at 19 (Small loan to Coventry)
9 Harry Kane - Loaned to Leyton Orient playing first team at 18 - Spurs academy product
10 Raheem Sterling - Poached from QPR at 15, when about to play first team football in Championship
11 Jamie Vardy - Non league, rose to be an incredible prem striker
12 Kieran Trippier - Loan to Barnsley aged 20, Loaned to Burnley at 21 - never played for Parent Club
13 Jack Butland - Birmiongham City academy, playing first team Championship at 19
14 Danny Welbeck - Manchester United Academy Productt
15 Gary Cahill - Aston Villa academy Product - played only 28 games for parent club
16 Phil Jones - Blackburn Rovers Academy Product
17 Fabian Delph - Poached by Leeds from Bradford academy
18 Ashley Young - Watford Academy
19 Marcus Rashford - Manchester United Academy Product
20 Dele Alli - Played League 1 or 2 football aged 16 - had over 100 appearances before moving to Spurs
21 Ruben Loftus-Cheek - Chelsea Youth Product - Still only played 52 appearances for parent club, despite being 24
22 Trent Alexander-Arnold - Liverpool Academy Product
23 Nick Pope - Non League, all the way through the ranks.

So they wanted to push more kids into a system, where the majority of England's best players didn't come from? I was totally against it at the time, and am delighted with the kids breaking ranks and going to Germany now, and others who refuse to be lured to the big clubs, but play at their level, and learn the game. It's only for the better in my view.

An outsiders view, if you will, might view EPP as a way to benefit the haves as opposed to the have nots. It’ll be interesting to look back in a few years time to compare and contrast.
