Cannot complain too much, we've been looking quite laboured in the last 3 or 4 games, and the defeat has been coming.
Only gripe is the football gasnt been great recently, we've reverted back to launching it again now with 2 big lads up top.
We played some excellent stuff at Palace in the 2st half going in 0-0, I'd take that every week over today's first half going in at 1-1

Although we do seem to struggle v wing backs, not sure if it's because we defend narrow allowing them lors of space out wide, or our top 2 have 3 defenders to occupy rather than 2, so dont win as many first ir 2nd balls.

Hey ho, its all done for another season.
Enjoy the mini break gents, UTC

Just as it seems to be every year, we are a 37 game team and today was definitely one of the poorest performances as a collective. For large periods of the game they were out of sync.

Surprising though we could have won. Some decisions going against us, Stephens head incredibly in the way, Brady blasting high and wide when 2 years ago he would probably have at least tested the keeper.

Great season but a game too far again.

Pope - 7 - Couldn't do anything with either goal.
Barnsley - 6 - Generally solid defensively, nothing going forward.
Tarks - 7 - Carrying the defence
Long - 4 - Really poor, nowhere near good enough for a run of games at this level. Why dive in for the 2nd.
Pieters - 5 - Plus 1 for the assist. Taylor is streets ahead, especially in terms of letting McNeil play his game.
JBG - 5 - Meh. At least put doubt in the full backs mind and try to go outside every now and again.
Westwood - 4 - Horrendous. Couldn't pass it or control it for most of the game. Constantly let runner off him.
Brownhill - 4 - See above.
McNeil - 5 - Him and Pieters don't work. Dwight doesn't do enough to stop full backs pushing on and Pieters doesn't overlap enough to allow Dwight to come inside with the ball.
Rodriguez - 6 - Unlucky with the disallowed goal and generally did OK
Wood - 6 - Lovely finish and slowly getting back to match sharpness. A shame for him he'll have a few weeks off now. A million miles ahead of Vydra as he puts the ball in the net.
Brady - 4 - Don't even know what to say. Gave the ball away, weak and delivery has disappeared.

Today showed where the big investment is needed. Centre midfield is desperately short of someone who can impose themselves on the game, and compare our full backs with Lamptey who was solid defensively, had pace going forward which allowed them to push our winger(s) back.

A rubbish performance to end the season, which somehow could've seen us win the game without VAR (lets not go there), but showed us exactly where we need reinforcements.

Onwards and upwards.

Pope 6 - He couldn't have done better with the second. Was a great finish.
Bardsley 5 - Needed more pace and quality attacking.
Tarkowski 6 - Steady.
Long 5 - Could have shoved over Connolly at any stage for the goal. Other than that he did ok.
Pieters 6 - Cannot have McNeil coming central with him in full back. Plus one for that brilliant knock for Wood.
JGB 5 - Didn't offer too much.
Westwood 5 - Played the sweeping pass around the back too many times.
Brownhill 6 - Did ok. Tried to make up for Dwight's drifting in and cover, also passed and moved well.
McNeil 5 - Needs the end of the season.
Wood 6* - Plus one for a great take, minus one for a rubbish clearance.
Rodriguez 5 - Striking off the ball wasn't up to his usual standards.
Brady 4 - Worked better with JBG on.
Vydra - Brought on too late. Can't score.

Pope 6 - Not much to do
Bardsley 5 - terrible going forward and not too much better at the back. Both of our fullbacks were constantly out of position today.
Tarkowski 7 - Solid Enough
Long 5 - Had a few shakes moments today and was dreadful for their second.
Pieters 5 - See Bards but good ball for Wood. Was skinned every time he went 1 on 1.
JBG 5 - Disappointingly he wasn’t involved at all today needs more game time and confidence.
Brownhill 6 - steady enough was better than Westwood today. Some good balls but didn’t step forward enough.
Westwood 5 - played far to many of his usual balls into the channel which didn’t work and he constantly lost the balks
McNeil 6 - Average. Didn’t have enough of the ball in the final third to affect the game. Not as effective when he comes central but we just don’t have the ball enough for him to stay in the game on the left.
Wood 8 - Brilliant finish and looked a handful all game. Good lay offs for Jay as well.
Jay 7 - Unlucky with goal and linked play well again but some sloppy touches today.

Brady 6 - was better than JBG but not much.

Most gave McNeil 6
They need to take a look at the 19 year old Brighton player and see what good player looks like

We gave our usual 'already on holiday' end-of-season performance - especially once their 1st goal flew in and Pope couldn't have the clean sheet.

Probably a match too many. That said that nudge on JayRod was a free kick anywhere else on the pitch and should have been a penalty. However, the VAR decision to rule out the 'goal' was correct. SD's pulled another 'rabbit out of the hat', as in November and December I really feared for our PL future. Given our trials and tribulations over the season to finish 10th is beyond my expectations. Missing out on Europe was a blessing IMO. Yesterday proved we haven't got the squad depth to deal with it. Yes we may need to bring in half a dozen players to take us towards a respective depth of squad but my thoughts are it's not going to happen in this coming window. Far from it and I certainly expect at least one of our 'jewels to move on.

Once the first goal went in and the clean sheet was gone they played like what's the point now nothing to play for.

But 2 of the decisions were correct. You are right about the marks, if we had been given the penalty and their second goal ruled out, the marks would have been much higher for the same performance. Some of the comments about Kevin Long make me laugh, last week he was Mr Dependable, always does a good job, one bad game and he's not good enough.

But they shouldn't have played like that should they.
What a great incentive to finish above Arsenal !
