Contracts

Post by Tinribs » Mon Jul 27, 2020 8:45 am

Sean Dyche mentioned sorting contracts out for the players going into their Final 12 months, who has only a year to go on their contracts, obviously Bardsley is one.

Think Mike Garlick needs to put a few extra shifts in at the office then looking at that.

Certainly does!!

Cause will not be helped If Hendrick gets a great gig in the next few weeks either.

The big one for me is Tarkowski. Personally I'd be amazed if he signed a new deal with us. Which means next summer we need to be thinking about cashing in to avoid losing him for nothing.

The good thing is almost all of our 'key' players that have long term value all have a good few years left on their deal. Well done to the club on them!

So Cork, Westwood, JBG, Long and possibly Lowton are the priorities.

Assume it'll be Bardsley's last year as he nearly went this year so will probably look to keep Lowton and bring another RB in at some point.

Does the + that is after some of the contracts mean a years option on top ?

I wouldn’t be so sure but they do need to act quickly.

Say we offered him an extra £20k per week for a 2 year extension. From next season, he’d earn an extra £80k a month for doing the same job. I’d take that - it’s an extra £1m per year, hard to turn down. Plus he protects himself/his family from a serious injury. Tie that in with either a % of any sale fee, and/or a reasonable buy out clause so he’s guaranteed to get a move when the chance comes along, I see no reason he wouldn’t re-sign.

From our perspective, we spend £1m to protect an asset with a potential £50m value from declining to £0. Well worth while.

That said, if he runs it down to next summer I can’t see why you’d pass up the opportunity of the riches he’d likely get as a free agent, so important we don’t sit on our hands!

Probably because a number of our players have seen the club dilly and dally on contracts, against the manager's wishes so they might see fit to run down theirs as Hendrick ended up doing.

Yes, and the * is when a player has been offered a deal but there has been no confirmation that it's been signed, currently that's Harker, Koiki and Phillips. The E against the youth team players is for those who have been given short extensions because of the pandemic.

Well if one of your mates takes a course of action and ends up rolling in it, surely the prospect becomes more attractive to you?

If on the other hand he struggles to find a new club/better deal in current times, might make you appreciate what you’ve got more?

I’m shocked Hendrick hasn’t been linked with clubs more over the last few weeks!

Don't you think that might be because he's already agreed a deal with a club. I can't imagine his agent has got him to walk out of a potential deal here if there isn't something better already for him. There have been the international links, Man United recently but I still think Newcastle is the most likely destination for him.

Cheers C&J, I struggle with the sites tables on android as it never shows the whole table as it does on desktop, usually missing out a column or 2 to the right.

I don't see much of an existential crisis for the summer of 2021 contract wise there (mind you, nor did I, at all, this summer - but it didn't stop Sean making a huge deal out of the fact we were able to discard a lot of past it players - Hendrick being the exception of course).

On the face of it, you'd be looking to extend:

Jack Cork but he will be 32 and unlikely to get a better gig than us so he shouldn't be too much of a problem if we want to keep him.

Jay Rodriguez will also be 32, we're 'his' club and if we want to keep him I am sure that will be a given.

Erik Pieters is proving solid backup and has shown his versatility, again will be approaching 33 and we have an option we can take up if we wish.

Ben Mee we have an extension built in regardless and he will be 31 and probably happy to stay here at this stage I'd have thought for as long as we want him.

Vydra we have an option on, so if he continues to be involved we can extend if we wish, or we can extend and sell, either way no issue.

Gudmundsson and Brady I would be in no rush to extend without seeing a stretch of games and a consistency of fitness over the course of this coming season - a squad our size, as shown, cannot continue to carry players who are out of action for 3/4 of it.

Kevin Long is one I am sure we will try to extend for a couple of years as he is decent backup, but he will be in his 30's and he will not get another PL club, just up for debate if he finally wants to be a first choice somewhere in a lower league.

Bardsley/Lowton I wouldn't be shocked to see both leave and it will probably be about the right time for that to happen.

Westwood is the interesting case - we only took the option on his one year this summer rather than tying him down longer term. Again though, he will be going on 31 and has already said he sees this as his 'home', I wouldn't have thought much of an issue here?

So, yeah - not sure what the big issue is? We are masters of our own destiny with all of them really that we would want to be (bar Westwood). Not a big issue I see, personally.

Possibly, but surely if he had a deal agreed, as a free agent they could announce it, if not sign? Chelsea announced Werner signing and he wasn’t even a free agent?

I imagine any Newcastle deals are still up in the air due to the ongoing takeover.

They could, but often they don't. He's still being paid by us until the end of this month (Friday) so won't actually be unemployed until the weekend.

But he'll know he can earn more money and improve his chances of playing for Englsnd by moving on. I think if I were in his shoes I'd be looking to try and progress my career now. This could be his last chance of a big move as well.

I think Tarks will go to a top six club this transfer window unless there new investor decides he can cut the grade as we transition and offers him the money and opportunities he needs and wants.

Hendrick I would think will announce over the weekend once he’s free of his contract here where he’s headed.
