What if your family holiday had been booked over 6 months ago?jackmiggins wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 9:58 amOff today - ‘cos I’m meeeeeee! Current govt advice is that officially you can go to most of these places, so you're extremely unlikely to be covered by any insurance if you cancel.
Family of 4 booked to go to - say - Tenerife, last December. Cost 3 to 4 thousand perhaps?
You've been stuck in at home since March, and you can either travel to Tenerife,(which is many many times safer than staying at home) for two weeks with your family, or cancel your holiday remain at home and most likely lose your holiday and your money.
Incidentally the islanders are desperate for people to visit.

Re: Holidayeeeee
Ha, ha, ha says the guy whose just disrespected thousands of key workers in his OP. Those key workers who have given so much over the past few months and may well have been looking forward to their annual leave / holiday abroad for months.
So, if you're a key worker now, do you take your well-deserved holiday or lose your holiday and your money.
It's quite a moral dilemma, since if you do go away then you can't return to the front-line for a further 14 days. On the other hand you have your family and your own well-being to think of.
Fortunately I don't have that choice to make and I'm not going away.

Re: Holidayeeeee
If we’re using words like “frontline” and insinuating these doctors and nurses have been in the trenches, digging in and fighting back then surely they’re being irresponsible going away. Especially when they have to be taken off the “frontline” for 2 weeks on their return. Shouldn’t they stay safe at home, ready to fight back when we need?nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:29 amHa, ha, ha says the guy whose just disrespected thousands of key workers in his OP. I agree with you by the way. I just find the word “frontline” used way out of place. There’s been many comparisons to ww2 over the past few months. It’s way, way over the top.

Re: Holidayeeeee
By frontline I was referring to all "essential" workers, which would include care workers, posties, police, bin men etc. etc,but I get your point about the term "frontline".Dyched wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:36 am

But just going back to doctors and nurses: if this annual leave was booked 12 months ago, and the holiday booked and paid for, I think that it would be harsh to stop them travelling - unless of course they were specifically instructed not to go by the govt. and therefore given a full refund.

I'm away and loving it. Safer at airport than Tesco's, safer on plane than train in UK and safer spending time with family in villa than going off to work every day .
You sound jealous because you don't have the bottle or nouse to sensibly travel on holiday.
Re: Holidayeeeee
His ill informed rant at me was because I dared to go away in February, but was back before lockdown, either here or in spain
Since then we've had one holiday cancelled, and we've cancelled another due to the current uncertainty, but fully intend to get away when it hopefully settles down
Like you, I would feel safe travelling with all the precautions in place, and our destination would be far safer than here. Not that that would stop Mr muggins thinking we're putting the whole country at risk

I think this lad could give his name to a knew "slang" term for a "numpty".
"What a miggins!" or "He's a real miggins", or "Don't be such a miggins!"
It has a bit of resonance to it.

Re: Holidayeeeee
Well that certainly caused some titivation amongst the guilt ridden! Govt advice wasn’t to go on holiday incidentally.
Just pointing out that new restrictions were always likely to come in and the stupidity of folk not to recognise this.
Especially those that plead poverty and then blame the govt and beg for tax payer recompense for having to stay at home for a further two weeks.
If you feel that’s acceptable, fair enough - I personally don’t.

Re: Holidayeeeee
NHS staff are exempt from quarantine, in fact there's a whole list of workers who are exempt. Me and my girlfriend got back from Portugal a week ago and she didn't have to self isolate, HR even gave her a copy of her employment contract to take as proof she works at an NHS trust. It was all irrelevant anyway as we just did the NHS COVID test as soon as we got back, it was negative .. and on with life as normal.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:46 amBy frontline I was referring to all "essential" workers, which would include care workers, posties, police, bin men etc. etc,but I get your point about the term "frontline".

Just been told our Holiday in the South of France in October has been cancelled... we were offered a guaranteed 3 year '110% voucher' or a refund of all money paid...
Have taken the refund.... been told 35 days to appear in my account.

You missed out the "L" in taking.
The point is that Mr Miggins advised in February that holidays should be cancelled and the government advised that they shouldn't be cancelled, and he is severely miffed at people who took the government advice rather than the Miggins advice.
He is especially miffed because he cancelled his holiday to Scotland because he was afraid of getting on a plane and thinks that people who were actually travelling by plane (and therefore had real money at stake) ought to have done the same.
