Norman Whiteside auction
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53593878 this shows how different the game was pre PL, Norman Whiteside was one of the top players of his generation, yet he didn't command huge wages, hence why he's resorted to selling his merchandise to supplement his income, football wasn't the money pit in those days that it's since become.

Re: Norman Whiteside auction
Sad story. He had to retire at 26.
I think he might have worked for us for a short time. Perhaps as a physio or something?

Re: Norman Whiteside auction
Imagine telling your kids that your grandfather played in the FA Cup final and scored the winning goal, then when they ask where the medal is, saying it had to be sold.
It is sad that players have to resort to selling what should be prized possessions, that should stay within the family.

Re: Norman Whiteside auction
Very short career at a time when spending your wage on the 'social circuit' was more popular than investing it. Regardless of how much players of that generation earned, you couldn't retire from work like some far less talented bit part players can now if they wanted to stop playing.
Re: Norman Whiteside auction
I think he was not on much of a salary at United as he had come through the ranks and it was only when he went to Everton that he earned anything decent and he had retired before the Premier League started although according to Wiki he earned more at Everton in two years than in the 8 years at United.

Scored a great goal in the cup final. Being a left footer I often tried to shape one into the far corner like that.....without the same success!!

He definitely had something to do with Burnley. Maybe did some podiatrist training with us He was a physio at Northwich Victoria.
I was talking about Burnley with him at one of those after dinner talks he does but I cant remember what he said - too many beers on my part

Re: Norman Whiteside auction
Has to have done because he broke Pele's record as the youngest player to play in a World Cup and that was in 1982 when Billy had us all glued to the TV supporting Northern Ireland.Conroysleftfoot wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 9:46 amDid he play with Billy Hamilton in the Northern Ireland team?

I'm pretty sure he had some involvement with Glen Little, providing special inserts for his boots as he
had one leg slightly shorter than the other which was playing havoc with his joints and posture.
