My nephew who's 11 got a phone last Christmas as he's starting high school in September (well.. that's the plan) and noticed he put your instead of you're when he texts me. Long story short, I've been teaching him the difference between there, their and they're, and you're and your - and now even his 8-year-old brother knows the difference.

Anyway, over lockdown, I was on local Facebook groups more and noticed how horrific spelling and grammar is in the UK. I know people have dyslexia, dysgraphia, and have had strokes, so of course, I'm not including those, but what words do you notice when people spell incorrectly?

There's many, but I'll start with the word definitely. A lot of people spell it definately.

I see people using as instead of has, also people struggle with the old to too and two.

As a teacher of ten and eleven year old children, I feel this has become more of an issue in the last five or six years. Indeed, you see far more there/their; could have/ could of; your/ you’re errors on this board, than you did on ClaretsMad, although the spelling police were out in force on there too.

‘Could of’ is a big one for my children and with the above, I make them non-negotiables in Key Stage Two.

Poor speling and gramar seems to wind a lot of peeple up.

Usually it only gets picked upon when a poster has criticised someone and included a "Your" instead of "You're" or "There" and not "Their" ....

I heard someones child a few years ago completed an English exam using "text speak" and actually passed with a "C+" ......

It's a form of OCD called Grammar Pedantry Syndrome. I wouldn't say I have it, as I'm merely pointing out how it's so common that I think fewer people can spell, than those who can't. But it can be slightly annoying with the basics.

I think linguistically language is ever evolving. Take 'ye' as an example, the old way of spelling 'the'. I think this is just the evolution of language in a digital age.

I have a friend who is a teacher and when we texts it's like speaking to someone without any concept of the English language so I don't think it has any correlation to intelligence/academic ability.

I wasn't referring to shortening of words - people will text 'k' to confirm something. You're instead of your is nothing to do with text speak, it's just using the wrong word and imo certainly links to intelligence and what that person learned in school.

Thoughts on the word 'literally'? Due to so many people using it incorrectly, it's now apparently changed it's meaning in the dictionary.

I sometimes find I use the wrong 'their' and 'your' from time to time. I often pick back up on it when I have read it back and I do understand the difference, so it's always puzzling why I sometimes do it - I just put it down to the way my brain works.

I think most people offering their views on a public forum - even on here - should have the manners to present their argument as accurately as possible.
If you're not sure of a word, take the time to look it up and learn it - I still have to stop and think about "separate", I don't why, I can spell extremely well but that one's in a blind spot.

Unless there were some kind of special circumstances or his or her story involved an incredibly clever idea involving text-speak, that tale of a kid using text-speak and getting a C+ is absolute shite.

I’m with ClaretAndJew. Text messaging has led to abbreviating everything and that has led to folk not caring as long as you understand them.
For the OP, chimmerley. When I was at primary school the teacher put it in a spelling test. I was the only one that got it right but I didn’t live in Richmond.

Possibly, I think its more about being focused on what I want to say so that becomes the focus - I have started using Grammarly more now which helps pick it up when I do it.

Neat, but I think I didn't get any further with your words than I did with the writings of one James Joyce.

I find it easy to read things that have one or two "mis-spellings" (whether there are typos or poor grammar). It's a lot harder to do this when almost every work is "unconventionally" represented. There are always two people involved in communications, the one doing the writing and the one(s) doing the reading. The purpose of the writer is to communicate with the reader. If it's made too hard, the reader may not "stay the course," so to speak.

Best one I saw was an trade stand advert for the Tour de Yorkshire cycle event from the Welcome to Yorkshire tourist board a while back, which after studying the route map on display I noticed that Middlesbrough was spelt incorrectly, the common mistake of spelling it Middlesborough had been made, being Mr Pedantic, I pointed this out to the Welcome to Yorkshire officials manning the stand who didn't know what I was talking about and were adamant it was correct!

These days fans, footballers and a certain manager we regard highly routinely trot out "it was just one them things, ....it was one of them ones, ....he's one them players". Hardly anyone seems to bat an eylid now because it's become so commonplace.

As a friend of mine told me: "but that's how our language changes all the time".

Even for people who are good at spelling and grammar, it's easy for typos to occur and recur.

Take our novelty PM, for example... I know his name starts with a B, but - whether it's a typo, or possibly some kind of muscle-memory - I always seem to inadvertently type "The busted, bloviating offspring of Joseph Mengele and the Honey Monster".

Odd how auto-correct never picks me up on it

Grammarly has a free version (the paid version isn't needed), and so you'd think if they're writing posts, they'd have that installed. Clearly not, as it would have highlighted that.

The discussion should be around: does it matter? We’re moving to an automated world where language and it’s use is changing irreversibly towards programming languages.

One I used for a while which still makes me chuckle when I catch myself about to say it - can i have a quick 5 mins... Like it's any longer than a normal 5 mins or a slow 5 mins...

There are two which crop up fairly often on here which are neither poor spelling nor poor grammar. They are simply examples of using the wrong word -

1. I will tow the line. 'tow' should be 'toe'

2. It didn't phase him. 'phase' should be 'faze'

However, the one that really sets my teeth on edge is the use of 'that' instead of 'who' when talking about people -

The player 'that' scored the first goal... The person 'that' lent me a programme...

When I was an 'infant' in the late 1950s I was taught that 'show' and 'shew' are two ways of spelling what we now use as 'show' in both instances. 'Show' was used for such things as 'Barrowford Show' or 'The Morecambe and Wise Show', whereas 'shew' was as in 'shew me what you have done'. 'Shew' is pronounced the same way as 'show'. My dictionary tells me that 'shew' is an archaic form of 'show' but I still use it sometimes because that's what Miss Fisher said I should do!
