Lebanon explosion
Doesn’t look good. Unsure what’s happened. But apparently a ‘mushroom’ cloud explosion. Hopefully media fearmongering with quotes like that.
My sister was there a few months ago and said how beautiful and peaceful it had become. But on the day she left things went a bit sour there again.

Re: Lebanon explosion
There was a fire before the explosion and some suggestions a firework storage facility at the docks. Whatever it was the kinetic energy was enough to blow windows out 10kn away and the blast was heard in Limassol, Cyprus.

Re: Lebanon explosion
Just seen this on the news it doesn't look good, let's just hope that the casualties are minimal, but realistically it's likely to be a fair number unfortunately. Whatever it was it caused a big blast and it was in a port, so there could well have been flammable materials in the area.

Looks like a genuine fire at a fireworks factory from this images. Scary though. Hope the loss of life isn’t as bad as feared.

I wonder if it’s a genuine fertilizer factory, or a Hezbollah sponsored ‘fertilizer factory’?

only thing i've read was an hour ago, it said the nitrate was confiscated from a ship a few months ago and stored in that building. Take it all with a pinch of salt at this stage, lets just hope the causalities are minimalbox_of_frogs wrote: ↑Tue Aug 04, 2020 7:15 pmI wonder if it’s a genuine fertilizer factory, or a Hezbollah sponsored ‘fertilizer factory’?

Apparently the aluminium nitrate had been stored there for over 2 years with absolutely no safety or security precautions!

Re: Lebanon explosion
Terrible tragedy but incredibly daft to store such stuff in an area like that.
As a total aside, about 25 years ago I became friends with this young guy who one night suddenly invited me to Beirut to visit his family (this wasn’t long after the civil war ended). When expressing fear for my safety over there he said not to worry because his father was one of the senior Hezbollah commanders and I’d be treated like a king. I suddenly became very adept at extracting myself from a situation without causing offence, a valuable life lesson. I never saw the guy again.
Anyway, best wishes to all caught up in tonight’s incident.

Crikey! Only saving grace is that it wasn't in a more built up area.

Terrible for the people who have had more than most to contend with for many years.

Re: Lebanon explosion
That's a really good book. A relative of ours lived in Beirut in the late 1960s and he said it was the best city he'd ever lived in. The people, the food and the wine. Apparently, it had some of best restaurants in the Eastern Mediterranean. It's a crying shame what grubby sectarian politics has done to the country.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 9:08 amActually meant to be a really brilliant place. Surprisingly little sympathy on here. Awful videos showing people suffering horrific injuries. My thoughts are with them and there loved ones

135 dead now, sadly that number is likely to rise, port officials placed under house arrest. How people can joke about such a tragedy is beyond me.

Re: Lebanon explosion
The ammonium nitrate was en route from Georgia to Mozambique when the vessel encountered technical problems and had to call at Beirut in 2013.
The Russian owned vessel was then abandoned along with the cargo which was then stored in the port warehouse.
Senior customs officials were well aware of the danger this posed and 6 letters were sent to the Lebanese judiciary to get the matter dealt with, the suggestion was to "give it" to the Lebanese military. All the letters sent periodically over the last 6 years went unanswered, so i would imagine there are a few high ranking judges who will not get a good night's kip tonight as the hunt for those responsible begins.

Re: Lebanon explosion
Lebanon has so much potential to (return) be a top tourist destination if they can sort themselves out. They are generally quite liberal but I’ve heard stories of people being attacked in the South for wearing swimwear on the beach and for males and females mixing freely together (Hezbollah).
Re: Lebanon explosion
The so called Paris of the Middle East way back, have heard for decades about it returning to that status, twice had meetings set up there only for them to be called off, it's such a shame.
The explosion would have resulted in large amounts of NOX and Ammonia gases, which would also kill very quickly if you got caught up in a cloud of it after having survived the blast.

I’d guess that if you were close enough to be affected by noxious gases, then the blast wave would’ve already done you.KateR wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 8:48 pmThe so called Paris of the Middle East way back, have heard for decades about it returning to that status, twice had meetings set up there only for them to be called off, it's such a shame.

Fully agree but that would end up with him needing an op to learn how to speak again.

He didn't claim to know what the cause was - he quoted some of his Generals and said they would know better than him. He was simply passing on their opinion. If he wanted to comment on things he knows nothing about he'd be at home on this board.
