Coventry City bloody hell. What a fall from grace.
I remember us playing them I think the first or second game of the new season in Div 1 after our "Ian Wright" promotion season in 99/00. Was expecting us to get pulverised by them and we ended up beating them 1-0 I think.

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
Coventry were still in the Premier League in the season after our promotion - they came down a year later and we did the double over them, winning 2-0 at Coventry and then 1-0 at home which was the final day of the season when a 2-0 win would have taken us into the play offs.criminalclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 10:17 amCoventry City bloody hell. Still no PNE on there. Not many mid-sized clubs who've never even had one season in the sun. Bristol City, Millwall maybe.

You're right. I had them confused with Wimbledon who had been relegated that previous season.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 10:28 amCoventry were still in the Premier League in the season after our promotion - they came down a year later and we did the double over them, winning 2-0 at Coventry and then 1-0 at home which was the final day of the season when a 2-0 win would have taken us into the play offs.
That's another name on the list, though they'd probably be filed under the "Wigan" category of coming from nowhere to the top and then sinking right back down again (under the MK Don's pseudonym).

First home back, Paul Weller scored. Different story for Wimbledon, had to go all the way down to the Combined Counties league to start their climb back to League One.criminalclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 10:39 amYou're right. Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
I don't remember City spending so long outside the top flight, but I suppose they did drop down to the third tier. Incredible really when you look at them now.

Hard to believe now but in 1998/99 season they played both Macclesfield and Stockport in league games.

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
That consecutive seasons list shows how there only a small number of actually established PL clubs and they're also currently the ones with a lot of money.
When fans raise their expectations they should have some realism about where the club can go as it is now.

The column on the right is only from the time football was invented (1992) as it shows us with 5 consecutive seasons in the top flight which isn't correct.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 12:08 pmhttps://www.myfootballfacts.com/england ... op-flight/

Wasn't our longest stint from 1946 till the late 60's?

Maybe that's consecutive to now (for those currently in top flight, how long has this run lasted- up to & including the coming season, hence Leeds 1)

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
Good spot so 6 in L2, and 6 in L1, it illustrates how rapidly clubs can plummet down the leagues, and several of those names were considered established PL clubs, so yes it does show that we shouldn't take our current evaluated position as a given, and we'll have to continue to work hard to maintain our top flight status.dibraidio wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 1:56 pmThe league where they'll start next season in brackets.

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
You could get sports bags with 'Burnley, 23 years in Division 1' until we were relegated in 1971. I think that was the wording but you get the general idea.

I think we in the top two or three for "longest in top league" table at that time. Certainly behind Arsenal.Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 4:38 pmYou could get sports bags with 'Burnley, 23 years in Division 1' until we were relegated in 1971. The irony of Luton is that they were one of the 20 Clubs who signed the " breakaway " document, leading to the formation of the Premier League, but have yet to play in it .... Notts County have a similar distinction !dibraidio wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 5:27 pmJimscho:

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
We are apparently 35th out of 49 clubs in the all-time Premier League points table, just ahead of Forest and Ipswich- “market leading” clubs when I were a lad! Another 50 point season would put us in the top 30...

What's gone wrong in the midlands?

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
Blackburn achieved 18 seasons over two spells. I think their second spell of 11 years was more impressive Than the first given that, once they’d been bankrolled to promotion, staying there without the ‘full’ backing of Jack Walker’s money was a fair old achievement. They weren’t skint, but but first period they were backed to the hilt by Walker.conyoviejo wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 9:35 pmWe only need another 12 concurrent seasons in the Premier league to overtake them, but you probably won't be around to see it happen.
If we can get to 10 we’ll have done extremely well from where we are now.

Interesting little snippet.
Arsenal
Elected to top flight in 1919/20
They remain the only club since the formation of the Football League in 1888-89 who never earnt their place on merit.
About right for them.

That table is the sole reason I don't believe in the 'Established Premier League' guff people go on about.
We are visitors to an elite club, nothing more than that.

Re: Number of seasons in Premier League club by club
The previous season because of the war was 1914/15 and when football restarted in 1919/20 the first division was increased from 20 to 22 clubs so it was one down (Tottenham) and three up (Derby, Preston and Arsenal). Derby and Preston were top and second but Arsenal finished 5th, behind both Barnsley and Wolves.Buxtonclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 5:08 amInteresting little snippet.
