Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
The new series has started.
Pakistan winning the toss and having a bat.
A quicker pitch at Old Trafford and some box office cricketers in the away team. Should be a great series.
Pakistan are playing two leg spinners as well as their fast bowlers.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Anderson, Broad, Archer, Woakes are the chosen pace men; hopefully they do a good job this morning and nab a few wickets.
The original schedule had this first (v Pakistan) test starting last Thursday at Lords, the first day of which I had a ticket for. I'm missing all the cricket (county & test) I would've been to this year- decent summer so far down here too; bah.

18-0 after 7
Plenty of play and misses and edges down to 3rd man for 4 as you expect in England.

One thing for sure is you can't bowl on the pads of any Asian batsman.
Bread and butter from them.

Well he's not disappointed so far, he's looked a class act, but England have bowled poorly in the afternoon session, after keeping it tight in the morning.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 12:45 pmBe a big test for the worlds no 1 batsman Babar Azam. Looking forward to seeing him.
If Pakistan can put 300-350 on the board then their bowling attack will challenge England that's for sure, they are a step up from the WI.
Typical OT weather it's showery and overcast, so we might not see much more play today sadly,

He looks a good un.
Very watchful at first and then 40 runs or so at faster than a run a ball without looking in any danger.
Sub continent batsman always practice batting for days as you have to over there.

Should be a decent series this. Pakistan certainly look a level up from the Windies.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Play underway again, important for England to break this partnership tonight, if they stay on for any length of time, spinners on now, lights an issue already.
This is like facing Steve Smith all over again.
Babar Azam's last 5 Test scores at the moment:
52*
143
60
102*
97
That's not a bad run of knocks is it.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
They've gone off for bad light even with the slow bowlers on, honestly what was the point in even coming out, and during that brief passage of play Buttler fluffed a stumping, to add to his dropped catch earlier, a 2nd life for masood, England could well regret these missed chances, 139-2 and this pair are well set to push on tomorrow. Definitely Pakistan's day and it looks a good toss to win, England had it relatively easy in the last 2 tests against the Windies, this series won't be such a breeze, and they'll have to up their game, because this Pakistan team are here to play.

It looked an easy stumping at first, until you see the replay and it hits Buttler's shoulder.
A lot more pace and bounce in this wicket.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Is it worth sticking with Buttler for the odd 50 or 60 with the bat when Foakes is a far superior wicketkeeper? If Buttler was scoring big runs you could see the thinking behind it.

If you want to be a good test side you have to pick your best available foakes for me is head and shoulders in front of buttler as a wicketkeeper any runs they score is a bonus up the colne

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Today is the first time for a few years where Foakes would probably have been the better pick.
Bairstow dropped an easy chance against Ireland last night so I wouldn't go back to him.
I see nobody has suggested dropping Stokes though after dropping a few catches recently?
Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
If Stokes dropped every catch that came his way you’d still play him as that isn’t why he’s in the side. You could stick him at third man/fine leg.
The keeper is there to take catches. However, I actually think that Buttler’s glove work has been ok. He had no chance with the stumping but should have taken the catch.
Buttler’s problem is that he is being selected due to his batting but he simply isn’t getting the runs in Test match cricket. I don’t think he will get dropped but I think he should and he can then just concentrate on white ball cricket.

With us due to tour India this winter I'd say it would make more sense to be picking Ben Foakes, certainly down there. You definetely want your best wicket keeper standing up to the spinners.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Agree with the 2 comments above, Buttler's drop could be costly, and that's his bread and butter day job, and he's hardly piling on the runs when it matters to offset his mistakes, Foakes his done well with the gloves, and he's shown he can contribute at least as many runs as Buttler in recent tests.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Buttler is probably the most experienced batsman in Indian conditions after all his stints in the IPL though.
I do think it will be taken out of his hands though as the schedule will get too tight to play all 3 formats now. After being in these bubbles and away from family for so long, something will have to give.
Even the coach Chris Silverwood said in interview last night he will give his staff a chance to take over for a while and rotate so people can see family.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
The one thing England could improve on is hitting wickets on direct run outs.
Pakistan have had 8 or 9 dodgy singles but we haven't hit once.
Fielding has got so good in international cricket you expect every effort to hit.

England seamers have bowled well in spells and Bess has bowled alright at the left hander.
Bess has bowled far too straight to the right handers with it spinning and just been food and drink.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
A shocking second session from England all set up by a bizarre decision to let Bess and Root bowl after lunch. With four overs to go before the new ball we take all the pressure off as both bowlers served up some real tripe. Awful in the field and an another drop from Buttler.
The medium pacer, Archer*, returns to take two in two balls but is so disinterested by this point he can’t be bothered to celebrate.
(*on exceptionally rare occasions he can bowl very quickly)

Finally all out for a par score of 326.
Ebbed and flowed both ways.
Let's see how we can bat against pace and leg spin.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
I've never understood some of the reviews from batsmen and bowlers when they look clearly out/not out in real time.
Seems a waste when they could be needed later on in the innings.

Pulled it around after an awful batting display early on.
Pope has got a bit of class about him for sure.
Root looks out of touch but battled hard. The two openers terrible footwork and Stokes played down the wrong line with a closed bat.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Root gone now, at least Pope's showing some fight, and Jos owes his teammates some runs after his drops behind the stumps, definitely Pakistan's day by a wide margin, but England have recovered slightly from 12-3, still a big deficit to make up tomorrow, someone will have to step up and put a score on the board, and try and get England somewhere close to Pakistan's total, a brilliant innings by Masood, and he's proving the major difference between the teams thus far, if it wasn't for his knock Pakistan would have struggled to pass 250, that dropped catch by Buttler is proving very costly for England.
Lastly a terrible review by Sibley, that sums up England's day, they've been given a chastening experience by this talented and youthful Pakistan side, and this test match is hanging by a thread now, why do England always start a test series slowly, TBF Pakistan have played smart aggressive cricket, but England handed them the initiative with Root's bizarre decision to bowl 2 spinners straight after lunch, and once England finally took the new ball both batsman had found their touch.

Only picked it up live once we were 3 down but the last hour was superb cricket. A 17 year old bowling 90 mph and a leg spinner turning it round corners against an excellent Pope and Root, clinging on for dear life.
Shame this Isn’t a 5 match series. Look really well matched teams.

From where we are and an awkward start to come tomorrow morning, it's difficult to see us getting much (if any) under 100 behind on 1st innings. England do have a habit of bouncing back but a with a 1st innings deficit and batting last- we are a long way of being favourites here.

One of the things I've always admired about the Pakistan and Indian cricket teams is the 'if they're good enough they''re old enough' approach to giving promising young players a chance.
When was the last time a 17 year old played for the senior England team?

I honestly don't remember, England consider Ollie Pope as young, and he's was in his 20's when he made his debut, Hameed is probably the last teenager that England bloodied on the international scene, as for bowlers none come to mind.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 8:00 pmOne of the things I've always admired about the Pakistan and Indian cricket teams is the 'if they're good enough they''re old enough' approach to giving promising young players a chance.

Tendulkar made his test debut at 16 and he didn't have a bad career did he, it seems to be in the England psyche to bring players through the u19 and a-list system, but sometimes it's worth throwing a few youngsters in to see if they sink or swim.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Decent morning session for England 159-5 at lunch, Pope and Buttler fought hard, And Pope got a good ball, Woakes has also tried to play positively and take runs if he can, still a lot of work to do in the afternoon, but the theory is that's the easiest period to bat, so if these 2 and the tail can get England beyond tea and bring the lead down to below a 100, and then England can nick 2/3 wickets tonight we could still have a game on, but Pakistan still in the driving seat as it stands.

Re: Eng Vs Pak at Old Trafford
Buttler gone straight after lunch, England will be lucky to make 200 now, this game is rapidly running away, we shouldn't be surprised England usually lose the 1st test of a series in recent times, the difference with this Pakistan team is once they get on top they have the ability to stay on top.
