Re: Ollie Watkins
I have seen him a few times since the restart. He is fast, intelligent and very hard working. There was a moment in a recent game where he tracked back 60 yards, made a tackle, and then fist pumped in celebration. I'm not convinced he's an instinctive goalscorer and he will probably have wealthier suitors but is he a Dyche player? Absolutely.

Decent player, but I doubt we'll add a forward to our current squad.

Re: Ollie Watkins
Surprised his release clause is only £18m, but i doubt he'll be our radar, even at that money, i could see him at West Ham, as I've a feeling he'll stay in London.

Wasn’t he originally a winger? We could do with a fast, hard working one of them...

Re: Ollie Watkins
Good player, but we don't need him.
Its hard enough as it is, without looking at players we don't want.
RW, CM, RB sorted.

Re: Ollie Watkins
Fast with an eye for goal ,hes exactly what we need as he also will track back and tackle
We need to improve our squad and at £18m is well within our price range.I also like the look of Pinnock the CB at Brentford.

Re: Ollie Watkins
He reminds me a little of Dwight Gayle. The majority of his goals were in or around the 6 yard box tap ins or headers this past season. Gayle was equally prolific in the Championship but not in the PL. Gayle scored 46 goals in his last two seasons in the Championship. He's only scored 10 in the past two seasons he was playing at Newcastle in the PL. I think Watkins would struggle in the PL personally.

18 Twix, perhaps. Although it'll be interesting to see how the value holds outside of the stadium.

Re: Ollie Watkins
He may not be better but he’s significantly younger than most of them and if the opinion is that he’s as good as the rest then that has to be a consideration.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 8:54 amWe do need to improve the squad, that is correct. Re: Ollie Watkins
Who is he as good as then? And squads don't improve signing players who are as good as what you've got, they just get bloated and expensive.

Re: Ollie Watkins
Vydra, who is probably going to leave this window. However, we have higher priority positions.
Re: Ollie Watkins
He’s versatile enough to play on the wing as well, so could take either Brady or Gudmunsson’s places.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 9:04 amWho is he as good as then? And squads don't improve signing players who are as good as what you've got, they just get bloated and expensive.
Re: Ollie Watkins
I’m not saying he’s as good as anyone, just pointing out that him only being as good as what we’ve got isn’t a reason to ignore him. At 24 he has time to improve, plus we need to do some succession planning as our front line isn’t going to last too much longer. I’ve no strong opinions on him as I haven’t seen too much of him so whether he fits the bill or not I don’t know.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 9:04 amWho is he as good as then? Re: Ollie Watkins
Wood is 28, Barnes is 30, Rodriguez 31 and Vydra 28 - it's hardly like they're close to retirement age. Surely anybody coming in has to be better than what we have - or else what is the point in signing them? Jay seems to still be improving at 31. Wood is reaching the peak of his powers, and his goal tally is fantastic.

Re: Ollie Watkins
I think our 4 forwards are absolutely fine and it's the one area we're sorted in. All of them have shown that they'll score goals and do a job when called upon.
£18 million would no doubt cut a large hole into our transfer budget, so I'd sooner we spent this on other more needed areas.

He's quicker than all 4 so a different option.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 8:54 amWe do need to improve the squad, that is correct. But which of the current 4 strikers is Watkins better than?
Re: Ollie Watkins
Fair point on the ages and as others have said there are more important areas of the squad at the moment. But as I general point I’m not sure I agree on the ‘must be better or why sign them’ statement. I think the forward line is probably as good as it can ever be for our budget. We have three strikers who can get 10-15 goals in the Premier League which is fantastic. The trick for us now is to maintain those standards and having players who can replace the strikers we have as they get older without a drop in quality.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:10 amWood is 28, Barnes is 30, Rodriguez 31 and Vydra 28 - it's hardly like they're close to retirement age. Is he likely to be any better than Che Adams?

Can't see a forward being a priority in this window. Especially one who'd only be 5th in the pecking order.

Probably out of our range now. Would have been worth a punt when at Exeter.

Re: Ollie Watkins
I knew nothing about him, so watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eux-alfkqHY
At least half of his goals are scored when no-one is marking him. Championship defending at its worst. Watch it and you'll see that I'm not exaggerating!!

Re: Ollie Watkins
It would show Villa have learnt nothing from last season.
Sign plenty of decent players and hope they fit into the team, without any proper planning.

Why do we need another striker, when we have 4 already who can all score at this level?

Don’t Aston Villa still have Scott Hogan on their books?
Re: Ollie Watkins
I was Ollie's PE teacher and tutor at secondary school back in Devon and in my honest opinion this kid will play for England at some point! He was always a striker growing up and given the chance he scores goals for fun and as has been correctly pointed out he can play as an attacking winger but not so much as a winger in a 4-4-2. On that basis, if he came to us he would be vying for one of the two striker positions. Honestly folks, his progress in the past 3-4 years has been staggering and there is plenty more to come because he has so many great attributes including an ability to score all types of goals along with an uncanny ability to find himself in just the right space at the right time. Better still is the fact that he has a proper football brain on him with him able to link play and create chances for others whilst also more than happy to bust a gut tracking back and closing down opponents.
The other somewhat hidden attributes of Ollie are the fact that his attitude and desire to learn are second to none with his feet firmly on the ground meaning, again in my opinion, he will continue to get better and better in the right environment which is why he chose Brentford in the first place. Whatever team he ends up at in the prem this coming season or next, he will choose the right team for his current level of development which I don't think will be us because our style of play will be very different to what he is used to and simply may not suit him.
Having said that, I would love to see him in a Burnley shirt and at 18 million quid, assuming the release clause rumours are true, that is an absolute steal for such a talent at such a young age. His wage demands would also be within our budget at this stage of his career.

Re: Ollie Watkins
No chance of getting him now. His potential when at Exeter was clear and I can remember a number on here pointing that out.
